I mostly just like being productive and making stuff. Think about death less when busy. All about that flow experience my dude.

And idk I just like approximate proportions and that’s more easily accomplished at a consistent rate using grids. Plus it’s painting. The underdrawing doesn’t really matter. There’s a good amount of risk and no reward hand drawing a face on a 12x16 just to cover it all with paint.

And I have been hand drawing stuff more over the last year. Still generally ends up having approximate proportions but is just more of a hassle in the first half.

That’s a neat process in that pic. I’ve goofed around with order of operations like what you’re suggesting on different stuff over the years. Have done a couple that were crazy then covered in skin tones, some where I did skin tones then covered them with crazy tones. May try ripping off aspects of the style in your pic related on something though it’s comfy

Greys, blues, purples. Add the same hues to ground objects the further away from you, as they create the ambient lighting. You have colors like on a clear day in the winter, not an overcast one. Another visual cue for winter is haze, making things misty and washed out the further away they are. Your shadows will be less defined and deep - your values are to vivid for that kind of feel.

Yeah I mean I generally know. I have an obsessive thing about leaving every painting at 2/3rds done. They’re always still being worked on and need at least one more layer, generally of mid-tones, to be generally complete. Plus I’m an asshole that has spent years now purposefully abusing black then white as a lateralus meme.

And as for the pen drawings, that was a whole thing where I got Into over working everything and trying to build texture and stuff. If you’re looking at that shaq meme specifically.

Put together a limited palette in whatever medium (Zorn + Ultramarine Blue is pretty complete) and just start. Trying to figure out the right way to paint before you start doesn't work. You need to make mistakes before you fix them. Oil is the easiest in my opinion. Its very workable and if you fuck up horribly you can scrape off your canvas and try again. Watercolor is convenient but its harder to control and you cant get away with student grade materials. I would recommend getting a few tubes of higher quality paint over a pan set. Transparency is also hard if you suck. Im not really a fan of acrylics so I'll let someone else shill them for you.

When I started in June 2016 I kind of intentionally set out to just start from ignorance. Then over the course of the next like 8 paintings I discovered a bunch of common mistakes that can be made (like using black ever on skin tones, or over watering acrylic paint), then became obsessed with trying to find a way to create a novel aesthetic by leaning into those mistakes.

Spent a year doing a kind of watercolor approach that really fucked up the pigment and compulsively would ruining things with black paint in some way.

Then spent year 2 figuring out ways to abuse white paint and additives and shit.

TLDR: Just start. Basically just plan on making mistakes and potentially being disappointed. Just get the cheapest shit on amazon (then when it sucks you can also blame it on that).

If you have some idea for a painting brewing, I'd say do like 2 paintings before that you don't care about so you can kind of learning curve through them and then hit the one you like all primed up.

That's what I did, where I really wanted to make a painting of Evangeline Lilly from webm related. I also had been shitposting on /tv/ for weeks since Batman v Superman came out, going nuts about studying the intricacies by which it was a bad movie, and had nowhere to put all that energy so I started with the sadfleck meme to figure out what to do, then blasted through a green room painting the next day, then started on the lilly painting feeling all confident and shit.
