Do we have any Corel Painter users around here? What are your opinions on it? How does it compare to other softwares, such as PS. CSP and Krita?

Painter user here. I've used Corel Painter, Photoshop, and Krita. Painters brush engine is geared heavily towards emulating traditional. Importing brushes is kind of annoying and its easier to just adjust settings on the defaults. If you watch sinix's videos and see him smudging around, that's the only thing painter does that other programs can't. There is an animation tool but it's awful and useless. I may be biased since it was the first drawing program I used, but I just find the painter workflow simpler and comfier than Photoshop. It also has a color wheel which is superior to the color slider in PS. PS is the most powerful, painter is the most comfy, and Krita is the worst of both worlds. Never used csp.

It's a faggy program only old ladies use to turn photos into "works of art".

I remember seeing you post this in another thread and at first I thought it was traditional, what was your process on this and do you have any tips on how to paint?

Ive been trying to keep my digital workflow similar to traditional. I did a line drawing on the canvas and then painted over it on a new layer. Started with two values and defined light and shadow shapes working from big to small. The brush is hard square with some bleed (picks up colors underneath). Another plus for Corel Painter is that it has canvas textures. I think the one in the pic I posted is watercolor paper. It's subtle but it does remove some the digital look. There's probably a way to do that in PS too.

I purchased painter when it went on humble bundle a couple months ago.
It was okay the traditional feel was interesting, but not really worth switching from PS for me.
I did have an major issue that pissed me off. and that was just by being installed it was flashing an add for itself on my desktop roughly twice a day even if I didn't use the software. whenever this happened my cintiq's pen drivers all immediately crashed and required a full system reboot to get them going again properly.
So between shitty self promotion and the driver crashes I cannot recommend anyone use that software.

the very core idea of emulating traditional media on digital is nonsensical
of course there will always be a few valid use cases for such thing, but those must be too rare to justify investing time and money on a tool

Thanks, that sounds very similar to Zorn’s method. You got a blog?

I've just started using painter, and aside from real 6B soft pencil and real 2B pencil, all the other brushes don't really give the pencil texture. am I supposed to be using different paper textures for different brushes?

Here's a little demo of canvas textures. They have the most effect when blending or smudging. There's pretty much no effect on opaque brushes (the body of the oil stroke is entirely unaffected until smudged). I recommend tweaking some brushes in the charcoal section. The triangular oil pastel is good. If you bought it with the humble bundle and got the manga pack, twinky is my main brush.
>am I supposed to be using different paper textures for different brushes
Sounds like you're coming from PS. Brushes in painter are more about changing the flow dynamics than texture. Think about changing a brush in real life. Different brushes will have different feelings and effects, but the texture is determined by the canvas.

the humblebundle painter bundle is back again for a week, grab painter 2019 (and some other stuff) for 25dollars if you want.

Is there a way to export the textures as image files? If so, would you consider posting the cold press texture?

thank you so much anon, I'll check out twinky brush as well. I did get painter through humble bundle, but have only been messing around with the core brushes so far.

What are some major differences between painter 2019 and 2020? That color harmony thing in the latest release seems big.

krita is far better as it is multi-threaded and actually uses the GPU for brushes

So, is it safe to say that all Painter is good for is emulating traditional?

Nope you can do regular-ass digital shit on it too.

I like it. Hasn't crashed on me yet which is loads better than krita. And it's nice getting actual blending done rather than the bullshit Photoshop does where your blends kind of turn into the grey mud. Getting to keep the colors vibrant the whole way through is a huge plus. I'm liking the traditional simulation, getting to pick different kinds of paper and mediums to paint in. The brush engine is nice, only gripe is the lag I get with huge brushes at high resolution.
