Now that you mention it, the trunk does feel a bit too monolithic here. Thanks for the hindsight.

As for the light/sun in the back, I had to go with it because of how poorly the original photograph of it was. Used my phone with a flash and since it was dark because It was nighttime which is the only time I have for Art, there was this big blob of light right there.

What setups do you guys use to photograph your pieces properly ?

That's what illustrators who work in traditional media do. Syd Mead and James Gurney for example both paint a small color study to work out the colors. Before that they do composition and value studies. I personally like to color pick off a small thumbnail sized preliminary study to get started. Allows me to use bolder brush work and not worry about getting muddy colors in the block in phase.

>> No.4206017

>>4205939
There is no one way to go about it, I've seen incredible work from artists who start from black and White then add colour but it has limitations and I'm personally not a fan. It allows you to establish composition, value
And design without worrying about colour off the bat, but overall it will usually end up with less deep, vibrant and lively clours.

As for picking a pallette,I don't think it's necessary to go that far, but you should at least decide you general colour scheme, lighting and how your warm and cool tones will work in the painting.

Looks good so far.
I think the arm behind him seems a little wonky though - the upper arm/shoulder might be a bit too long.

The arm playing the keyboard on the top right also doesn't look right - not entirely sure why though. It might be a combination of being too stiff(?) and colliding with the shoulder of the lower arm.

The neck seems a smidge too long but looks passable. The width and the left edge of the neck was better in the previous version imo.

Since you're not getting any proper feedback, I'll shoot:

You have some areas that are too dark in the areas that should be part of the light family. I made a quick Cutout filter version of your piece to show this. I know this shit is really hard to control when you're going into areas with a lot of surface deformation but I thought I should point this out.

I also think you should have an even clearer separation between soft and hard edges. The neck is also too long but you know that already.

Anyways, it's a really nice looking study and I think it's pretty impressive what you were able to do with such limited brushes.

Thank you good sir anon, for resizing.
Because you posted your picture at a correct size (below 1000x1000 pixels) I will crit you.
This rendering looks nice, all the forms are very present, its not flat anywhere and its not too washed out or anything. Your mark making could use some work, its not too pleaseant to be able to see all of the brush strokes in this way (because I can tell you used a transparent brush) It comes off kind of like a weird watercolor hybrid. Make it look more like a rendered oil painting by using a soft brush in the color transitions. I think that it is sometimes very GOOD to show brush strokes, but that's more common in traditional painting and its not so good when you can see the transparencies in the strokes. Use 100% opacity in a second pass after you've found all the forms. Its fine to do the transparency to find the forms but afterwards clean it up.
This just takes time and practice and if you're just studying isn't always necessary

A few things:

+You need to look up references of Mars and to apply that color scheme to your drawing. Include those burnt siennas, those orange mid tones, and the yellowish highlights. This does not currently read as "Mars" - the alternate colors even less so.

+ Simplify your value groups & shapes

+ Make sure to be cohesively rendering thing out evenly. For example, the wall is rendered in a simple, graphic way that is jarringly different than the ground & sky.

+ Pay more attention to your lighting. There is a clear light source coming from the front / sky, yet the figure and ground are lit from all over the place. Stick with this one, strong light source - it'll help with simplifying your values, colors and shapes.

+ I don't know what you've got going in the typography department, but it's helpful to work on covers with some basic text blocked in to help give you a better idea of how the illustration will work with text.

+ Consider overlaying some textures over the drawing at some point. The rendering looks very cheap - something that can often happen when people use 'perfect' digital brushes (ie. round brush with no textures, etc.)

Hope this helps!

Thanks! So the texture is a mix of different textures layered on top of each other. I basically have a folder I drag and drop of some curated textures that I can tweak to fit the piece. The key is to get a good mix of several textures layered on top of each other in a way that don't over-do it. Textures like you posted can definitely work - try combining it with another.

Try and look up free texture packs. In addition to your base textures, consider using some supplemental detail textures, such as https://graphicburger.com/dust-noise-overlay-textures/ . The grey-ish stuff around the border is actually a pretty simple canvas texture. However, I used a nice, streaky, directional brush to erase large chunks of it so that only a few bits remain to make it seem like canvas is popping through, or to give it a faded look.

It's pretty fun to mix-and-match different textures you find, and it's highly personal/subjective to find ones you like and that work well with your work. I'd just recommend to avoid using only one texture and instead focus on creating a blend of them and to implement them in a subtle and synergistic manner.

Hey, thanks a lot for taking the time to write such thorough advice. I need to dive deeper into this whole Graphicburger-site.

Also need to start paying closer attention to this stuff. I already utilize similar techniques for coloring grayscale images. Building up gradient maps, overlay, and color layers etc. Somehow I still tend to get lazy during the final steps and just blast way too many textures on my everything.

Tl;dr: Cheers. I'mma use this on my Shriek fan art thing that I'm doing...

What I love about your version is that it has the weathered look and style of old Pulp fiction novels, which is the genre that this book is, it fits very well.

Nice! I think this looks a lot better. I totally understand that you gotta keep it consistent with whatever you previously had.

I'm glad to see that you and others found the feedback helpful. If there's one thing from that feedback that I think is most important, it'd be to really play into the strong light source. I see you did that with the stronger shadows on the ground, but the figure is still a little jarring.

It's a missed opportunity to really capture a 'hero shot', where you feel like you're going to follow the protagonist wherever they go. To achieve this, I think you could darken the back in a way that is much more even and unified, as opposed to having all sorts of value & color variations that it has now. Darkening it all to a more even, singular value helps create a strong shape that helps ground the figure in the scene, where the figure is less defined by all his muscles etc. but rather the rim-light around his (now strong) silhouette. Right now, the figure does not have a very unified value shape - especially since his shoulders seem to fade into the sky.

This is all pretty wordy, and I hope it makes sense. Here's a before/after GIF for comparison. Totally your call with how you want to proceed!

Took another crack at this concept. Going to go back and do some more iterative concepts.

I originally treated this as sort of a warm up but then grew frustrated with it and spent far too long on just going backwards and forwards. But I think it doesn't a somewhat decent job at expressing the idea that was in my head at the time.

Now back too the drawing board.

Hey, thanks for the feedback and kind words. I originally had an orange rim light on her but I decided to go with a more monochromatic feel because I felt that having such a strong color and high rendering would just be too much. I'm still going to spend about 3 days on this so everything is up to my standards etc. I haven't rendered the hair at all yet, for example... No 3D or photo bashing here though. Not yet, at least.

The original character design is kind of horrible (pic related) but I really love my 90's childhood nostalgia bullshit and I JUST heard that they might do this character on the next Venom movie so doing this might help me get a bunch of clicks from clickbait news sites.

I couldn't watch the last Venom movie though. I tried a couple of times but it was just so fucking bad that I couldn't get through it...

I like this! I think you could have more highlights on planes that are facing a similar direction as the bridge of his nose. Also, try to brighten up some of the planes that are facing more to the left. I just feel like this would make him feel a little more 3-dimensional. Here's my super quick and lazy overpainting.

The obvious next step would be adding color so maybe try doing that. Just do a quick gradient map and go in with overlay/color/multiply layers. Not completely necessary but that's what I'd probably do, just for funzies.

Going to go through one more round of revisions before I start refining the edges and colors. I know three already that need to be done.

1. Revise the breasts/shirt ruffles to better align with her centerline for a cleaner pose.

2a. Revise the right leg so it looks like her weight is shifted towards it.

2b. Draw a desk, rail, wall or something for her to be leaning against.

Anything else?

Because your work is extremely good so they can't shit on you, and it's also not a cute girl or anime tiddies so they can't drool over it.
I've seen this happen many times, not even just on draw thread. If someone says "pyw" and the guy actually posts the work and it's great suddenly everyone goes quiet and the post is buried. On the other hand if it's shit there will be a million (You)s.

People are just not interested in good stuff, they're interested in shitting the on the bad stuff AND the good stuff to make themselves feel better about themselves. Just look at the first reply you got claiming it's not particularly impressive, even though it certainly is very high quality and probably just as impressive as you may think it is.
It's the sad reality of this place and why you don't see many pros posting work here even though there's quite a few pros who actually browse the site.
