What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

>>4197732
To me it looks like you're drawing in the values with a tiny brush and focusing on details first. Everything's just a bit gray and the edges are smudged and overworked. I had this problem for a while, what ultimately helped me was to just focus on drawing and anatomy, and to learn how light works (how it really works, not how artists say it works).

If you want to save this piece right now though, I think you'd get more out of watching some videos on how painters block in major shadow shapes first and then define edges. Marco Bucci is incredible at explaining all of this. James Gurney's plein air videos are also worth watching just to observe his process.

>she is standing on a ship in open sea in a very sunny weather
I feel if you have a specific setting in mind and aren't just drawing a pin-up on a blank bg it helps a lot to color in the bg first, as it helps you coordinate your colors more easily.
Other than that, the biggest thing that stands out to me is that you use the same hue for all of your shading, which makes the colors less lively.

Also I notice you seem to be a little unsure of your use of saturation. There are many reasons to saturate/desaturate a colors but generally what I have found is
>Alternate saturated/desaturated colors as you pick lighter/darker colors, pic related demonstrates this, though you don't need to do it as dramatically as him
>use saturated colors for elements that are meant to be focal points of the image or otherwise stand out (think eyes, important objects, breasts and dicc if you're drawings lewds)
>Conversely, use desaturated colors for elements meant to recede in the image. This is atmospheric perspective, and in reality you only see in on very distant objects but you can exaggerate it for compositional effect
>generally, it can help to stat with more saturated colors for your base colors. Your highlights and shadows will usually be more desaturated, and will make the colors of the object look a bit more washed out, so if you are going for a lively color palette try to pick bright, bold colors first as your shading will neutralize them. It is easy to dull down a bold color, but it is hard to make a dull color pop again

Not that anon, but the colors are a bit chalky and tend toward the same brightness, so there isn't much color or value contrast. This isn't inherently bad, and I kinda thought it was an effect you were aiming for in your drawings. But if you do, maybe think in terms of what you want emphasize, which colors you want to pop. This image is almost entirely low chroma reds with neutral gray (which looks blue in context), against a gray-yellow background, and with neutral white for balance. The blue stood out to me, so I emphasized it a tiny bit, but that's just one fairly conservative way to make something stand out, you could do almost anything really. Cute drawing by the way.

>To me it looks like you're drawing in the values with a tiny brush and focusing on details first.

Exactly what this other anon said. The mouth specially looks like it was rendered with a 1px brush, at 400% zoom, while the rest is still in a rough draft stage. That's why the image feels so weird and you don't feel like you're progressing.

As for the rendering itself, I think the forehead should be a bit in shadow, not as bright as the eyebrows; and the light and shadow on the cheeks, don't make the transition between them so sharp, it makes her face look flat. It looks like it's perfectly hitting a uniform, flat plane on her face, and then there's a sharp step at the top of her cheeks.

Also your value range is pretty narrow right now, nothing goes over 50%. Make the light from the spell brighter.

me? i erase a lot. i also think through the "layering" of the image so to speak, like X is gonna be in front of Y which is infront of Z an try to draw closest to viewer first an work my way down. but i also try to place the "fixed points" of a pose before drawing the more "floating point" like parts as well.
i think of it like "i want the hand to be here an in roughly this position an therefore the rest of the arm must be between the area the shoulder would be an the place i have placed the hand. i try not to draw blankly out into open space, i try to plan placements of things first to give myself anchors to work towards. often i'll lay down light (or not so light) sketch lines as well to help me feel out shapes an general compositions/flow/forces/poses/proportions

i also have a lotta "prebuilt" shape libraries in my head (for lack of a better way to explain it) that are like, the diff parts of the body at diff masses an angles an degrees of flexion in relation to other joints an how those tend to compress an squash an stretch but in simple, appealing an easy to remember shapes that read clearly. i kinda assemble them like legos almost.
i think of it like "i want hand here in this pose i kinda jus have in my mental library an at this angle an position the arm an elbow would have this specific shape i also have saved in me visiual brain library" etc etc. a lot of that is studying the figure along with other artists i like in tandem to break down their stylistic choices and why they make them... i think. i could just be talking out my ass right now lol, apologies for rambling so much

I like you so I hope this helps.

You seem to have started straight from the details without getting the underlying general shape right and drew the lines on top of it.
That's what the layers are for, first draw a good girl, then put secondary details, armors and lines on top of her.

The things I fixed are
-trapezius shape is way too fucking harsh, it's never meant to have a hard edge
-her tits are growing straight from the clavicles while they are supposed to be on the lower portion of her pecs and hang down from there
-she has some malnourished hanging african tits, also they were too high. I think this is the torpedo shape you actually wanted.
- the torso and the neck are generally too big for her head.

Like this?
