IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

Dude a lot of people, myself included, post and don't get comments. Either there is nothing remarkably wrong or everything is so wrong it's impossible to say where to start, or somewhere in between. Not even to mention that most of this thread are themselves beginners and are in no position to offer critique. You post art here to contribute to the board and if you get a comment thats good, if you get helpful advice even better, but you aren't required or entitled to a response. It also usually helps to explain specifically what you want help with based on a perceived problem in your drawing which is particularly pertinent when they are just studies and sketches and not finished pieces.

Critique is mostly relevant to the draw thread to fine tune composition, lighting, detailed anatomy etc., what you will get here is "work on this more" because you are lacking fundamentals, you can't expect a fucking redline of a half assed meme drawing and some quick sketches

First, rotate your fucking picture right side up and resize it before posting it. Secondly, what you need to learn from Loomis is to draw things with volume, as if they are in 3D and they have depth and draw things out of simple shapes. Clearly you didn't do this in this drawing. Honestly, you're probably trolling, but if you're not, I understand that it's difficult to read something and really extrapolate what exactly you're supposed to take from it, which is why saying, "Go read x" isn't super helpful.

Try to keep the head's shape spherical, the main thing I see is that the proportions are a bit off and the angles do not match on the different parts of the face like eyebrows and mouth edges.

Welcome to digital!

I think your picture has too much white space, which blinds the eye and make coloring/shading way harder than it needs to be. If you are not using layers then start using them because the lineart is also difficult to see like that.

Otherwise the coloring has one glaring issue, there are almost no mid tones it is going from the lightest to the darkest value very fast with barely anything in between. If you wish to improve you coloring you will need more midtones.

Another thing that bugs me is that I cannot seem to find the light source it seems to be coming from top right but I can also see it on the front and since there are few midtones both light sources just melt into one massive white area.

Questions?

>how long do people typically practice this
They never stop, honestly. It's about your overall feeling of comfort and line confidence - professionals are able to do what you did with cleaner linework in a shorter span of time, and they really don't have to spend too much time thinking about any one aspect of it because they're practiced enough to know where they'll lay down their values, where their light source(s) is coming from, and most importantly why they are practicing that particular form. Artists who do this for a living typically practice with a purpose, a goal of what they want to get out of this in mind.

Also, there's no set number of hours per week, or day. Really, it varies from person to person for everything. Jascha Heifetz would typically practice scales for 2 hours a day, rarely more by his own accounting, and he was (and to some still is) considered the greatest violinist of the century, his technical ability with the instrument a match for any Paganini composition.

So I guess the best advice I could give you and any other /beg/inner is to not worry about how long something takes you, but to figure out a way to enjoy doing it while also trying to do it for a reason. The goal in art is to coordinate your hand and mind to work together, all at once. I would challenge myself to try and do complex forms and shapes, then go back to them after a day or so and be able to see my many errors and mistakes I made because I was looking at it with a fresh set of eyes. Artists, writers, anyone in any creative field - they can get bad tunnel vision when they work on 1 thing for an extended period of time, so it's good to challenge yourself but also step away for a few and do some revising. Oh, but try to finish whatever you start too (without rushing it). It's how you build your discipline and that's an important quality to have anyway.

I once heard a useful saying, I think there's a similar sentiment somewhere on drawabox. It's something like:
If you rarely practice, you'll never improve. If you practice often but aimlessly, then you'll never regress, but you'll rarely improve. Only focused practice will give you real improvements.

Hold the pencil the right way. Don’t fill in your shadows like you’re using a colored pencil or writing, turn the pencil to the side and make long confident lines.
Practice dynamic drawing, there’s a few tutorials on YouTube that are pretty good.
Break the image down to its essential pieces and if it reads right, then go to the next step of adding details.

Lastly, stop drawing with your wrist, it affects your line weight.

if you want to improve then you have to come to terms with being shitty at art. It's painful, but it's the only way. Once you come to terms with that, then start to objectively look at your artworkt, not with an 'woe is me' wimp disposition but an actually objective judgment of what is lacking. This is how you improve.

You've been bratting out that no one replies you seriously but fail to realize that you have not made the effort to be serious. "Oh but I draw so much! What do you consider "learned to draw."

When I say that you learn to paint before learning to draw I don't mean it literally. I mean that you just into painting before you even learn to draw well.

You can't tell me that you know how to draw when you haven't followed basic perspective which means you lack--as shown--in many other fundamentals.

If you want something different: I can say that your drawing looks stiff. Not dynamic. This is because you've probably never done gesture drawings or have barely put time into it.

But yea. It's a bit annoying when I see people understanding how to properly shade something with photoshop but they're really just polishing a turd.

Learn the fundamentals in drawing then you can move onto painting. Otherwise you get stuff like this.

well, I made my way through loomis, going back a few pages if I missed a day, randomly doodling loomis on my offtime too along with serious study, then I did drawabox, done drawabox possibly 4 times throughout the years, mostly just the first two lessons, have a shoebox just full of fucking drawabox line practice papers, but my lines always eventually disintegrate into pretty much chicken scratch, I studied anatomy rigorously, fucking loved doing that, did that whenever, from photos, videos, books, real life (I own a skull, and I have a body), also that includes life drawings I guess too, drew a fair bit from life, just because it was easy to have a topic to draw, also followed along to the bridgeman book and watched and copied along to many vilppu videos as well as the occasional proko video which is nice for anatomy too.

really only things I haven't studied rigorously was color theory, because I couldn't afford anything beyond pencil and paper until recently and perspective, because I'm lazy

also, there was a two year period from beginning of 2017 to may of this year where I stopped drawing because of mental illness
and I mean, thanks for complimenting my shading, but, sorry to destroy your perception, that was my very first time shading in photoshop and it was using the default mixer brush just using the knowledge I had from traditional art

The other question is about the size of the tablet, i'm using a Huion 420 which has a working area of 4x2.23, i know that is not even recommended to draw on this kind of tablet but i bought it when i first started showing interest. So i wanna know what would be a good size to have for drawing.

I own that exact model, on the same program with the h420 and the h640p (about 40-50$ if I remember correctly) the h420 is choppy and produces shitty lines, has constant problems on a number of programs, while the h640p, despite even being fucking bent from poor care, produces fine smooth lines and has less problems (mostly disconnect issues which are new and due to poor care of the usb cable)

the problem is the tablet, also the h640p is maybe double the size of the h420, and the size has not been a problem for me yet, though I am still a shit /beg/

Ears are pet peeve of mine as so many artists neglect or hide them (Yeah I am looking at animes covering the ears with hair all the time) When ears are one of the core building blocks of the head, they are just as important as hair and eyes to know.

Another advice I can give is to draw the entire head first before adding the individual parts like eyes, that way you will be able to build the whole head before getting into the details.

Side note, having an eyepatch on to cover one eye is something that judgemental individuals can interpret as you covering it because you found that drawing the second eye and make it match the first one to be too difficult so you just hid it instead. But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you had a different goal. Remember, drawing the building blocks of the face individually in a vacuum is way easier because they have do not have to fit with every other part from rest of the face/head but if you do need to draw the whole head then everything must fit together or else it won't look right.

Yup, if youre trying to do this to reference pics you always need to do this in order to reduce your mistakes:
Imagine them bald
1. Draw main perfect circle.
2. Draw line from top of ear to edge of closest eyebrow.
3. Draw perpendicular line to #2 line
4. Draw the foreshortened curve of circle by using the edge of the eye as outermost edge. The ends of the circle meet where the #3 lines touch the blue main circle #1
5. Draw the curved eyebrow line in foreshortening (imagine a cheese wheel and how it curves)
6. Place the imaginary middle line which curves all around features, keep in mind that the top of the curve on fore head needs to stay in the center and bottom needs to be in middle of chin.
7. From bottom of line #3 and #4 place curved line to middle of nose.
8. Place line from eyes by using the resting place for eyeglasses (blue arrow next to #3) to find placement.
9. Draw da chin

Don't use such shitty ref next time. The back is very flatly lit and the muscles are stretched in this pose = less form.

Supraspinatus sits under the traps and has very little effect on surface form. The spine creates a gap between the erector spinae.

The red parts in pic are bone landmarks. I'm not that confident in my back anatomy but I think my version is more accurate.

sort of. You have to go beyond the bare minimum so don't just copy everything from the books, actually take the exercises in them and practice them. Understanding the theory and method is necessary and all but its the actual practice thats going to make you good. it depends on how you use the books

I heard the clothing on this one doesn't look good. Particularly on the hat and the lower part of the dress. The upper part of the dress feels flat but I'm not sure why. What particular could i do to improved upon it, if salvageable.
