i dont know what water thread is. anyway; the sketch was made for an art college project. i designed a small zine with illustrations about war in serbia. I brought my drawings in and started describing the project to the rest of class using a projector, the door opened and some random, official looking people went in. It turned out they were some serbian artists that were visiting our college on that exact day and nobody informed me about it. They were really angry about my work lol. Their translator kept asking me why there was a huge ass drawing of radovan projected on the wall with „remove kebab” written over it and what was i talking about. I stormed out of the class. The upside is that I read more about the conflict afterwards and learned it wasnt as black&white as media portrayed it to be.

tldr: dont go to art college

and thank you for kind words about my sketches

Pencil/pen and paper is better to start with since it's really just you doing everything. No undos, no stabilizers, etc. Best way to learn imo. Digital is not necessarily bad for learning though. The most important thing is to practice consistently so if you're more comfortable practicing in digital then do digital. If traditional then do traditional. It's not really that big a deal.

Posting a few more pages since people seemed to like them more than I expected. And want to post some thoughts about sketchbooks because they are something that gave me a lot of trouble in the past but are now my favourite thing to work on as an artist.

First of all the way you think about sketchbooks is extremely important to your productivity as an artist. When I was younger I had an awful habit of starting a sketchbook with a few good (from my perspective at the time) drawings and then being petrified to draw anything else on the sketchbook lest I "ruin" the whole book. So I had a collection of half a dozen sketchbooks lying about my house with 2 -5 drawings in each one, absolutely worthless and not even worth flicking through. Though I knew this was a problem I never really did anything about it.

I moved abroad for a few years (in 2016) and took a year-long detox from PCs and tablets etc so that I could dedicate myself to physical pen and paper drawing, and forced myself to start a sketchbook and FINISH THE DAMN THING NO MATTER WHAT. I wouldn't tear out or deface shitty drawings and I would make a concerted effort to at least mostly fill each page from cover to cover. And I did it, and it's literally the beat decision I've made as an artist. Since then I am now working on my 5th sketchbook (they are usually quite small but my third sketchbook was something like 2 hundred pages so it took eat longer to fill than the others, I have such a love hate relationship with that thing)

Anyway I ended up writing a bit more than I thought I would, idk if anyone gives a shit. But I'll post a couple more pages with some thoughts anyway

I like to keep pages at least somewhat themes, of there's a particular type of design I want to work on I'll do a ton of studies and sketches all related to that design or idea or whatever it is trying to develop on that page. It helps me stay focussed and motivates me to work more and more on that subject until I fill the page at least, if I feel like it I'll keep working on the left page (I usually only draw on the right and make some notes on the left.) If I want to do some studies about something else before I finish the page I'll start a new page and go back to the old one later

>> No.4184670

>>4184665
I usually leave shitty sketches on a page, and find that even a page full of shitty sketches can be redeemed by ONE cool looking sketch, they will attract your attention and you won't notice the shitty ones as much, so don't be discouraged by shitty sketches.

Although sometimes, as is the case on this page, and sketch is just so damn ugly that I can't stand looking at it and I will actually tear out th page or cover it up( that's rare though, I've done it about
5 times in the last 3 years. I covered this page with gesso and I might do a little oil painting thumbnailstudy on it later.

Last one for now, one of the most important things about sketchbook drawing is that, while is is okay and fun to show it to people, you should NEVER plan to, or think about showing your sketchbook to another sole WHILE you are drawing in it, the sole desire to show your sketchbook to people will tense up your drawing and cause you to overthink how you're drawing, which is literally the worst thing you can ever do while studying, you will learn way more when You are allowing yourself to just be shit sometimes.

Alas, a lot of normies who I show my sketchbook to don't really like it, asthey don't really get the point of the way I'm drawing while k draw in my sketchbook, they expect beautiful illustrations on every page, and it is the fact that k don't give a shit about that expectation that allows me to improve, and it was the most valuable thing I ever learned to do.

Pick a subject that interests you or you need to improve on, such as clothing, enviorments etc. Then fill some pages with that shit. You could even dedicate entire sketchbooks for a certain subjects. It may be a challenge at first, but keep at it. Feels good to get out of your box once in a while.

Posted this in beg but sometimes posts get ignored there. I spent up to 5mins on each skull. The left ones were challenging. Am I feeling form well? Or am I overextending my skill level? Any suggestions on where to focus my attention? Honestly drawing skulls has felt better than grinding Loomis circles.

The book just shows you pictures and then they tell you here are the points where the tension comes from and it moves in this direction, which is completely unnecessary because you can just know that by looking at the wrinkles. When drawing from life or reference just draw what you see. When drawing from imagination there are no arrows to tell you what to draw so I want to learn some general rules so I can draw from imagination.

As a fellow beginner, I think it helps to draw basic shapes, put the cloth on them and try to imagine how they fold and interact with the shape. Different materials interact differently.

>> No.4203148

>>4203073
I've found books and tutorial to be usesless, Folds are the trickiest thing to study because there is so much randomness and chaos involved in the final shape. My best advice is just to simply study the basic types of folds, draw some very basic examples of each, then find references on pinterest of people wearing clothes with VERY minimal creasing and folding and try to identify the type of fold first, and THEN draw it as close as you can. Keep trying this with the most basic references you can (think simple t-shirt+jeans combos with simple poster and minimal folds) and as you start to get the hang of it, find more and more complex examples.

Drawing and painting folds is very much a process of just "feeling" the flow of folds in a certain posture, it takes a long ass time, just be patient and have faith that you will eventually get the hang of it.

the main types of folds as i understand it are as follows (search online for examples yourself):
Pipefold
Drop Fold
Diaper Fold
Half-lock Fold
Spiral Fold
Zig Zag Fold

Interesting. Yea I just tried to draw from memory. It looks equally shit to my drawing from reference but I think you're right. I need to focus of the specific details. Draw different types of folds in different materials. The way I do it now is cartoony. I'm getting the point across but it's normie tier which imo is below beg tier. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm gonna try.
