Hard round is great for studying (and some particular artstyles) and isn't some be-all-end-all rule of art.

I found that focussing on hard round brush in early studies helped me to focus more on colour, form and value without getting bogged down with texture brushes. Also shading with texture brushes will look ugly if you are relying on the texture too much, so learning to shade with hard round will make your mistakes stand out more and force you to improve rendering.

I recall having dreams, probably brought on from those, where I drew shit in some fictional art program and it only took a stroke of a brush to have something exactly how I wanted it without tediously going through extra steps and doing it over and over again after making an error and I found it very nice. I disagree that they are intrinsically linked. But depression and chemical imbalance aside, I think that people who always talk about how much they "want" to do something and something always seems to get in the way, simply like the IDEA of doing the thing, but don't really like doing it as much as they think.

The idea of being an artist and drawing cool shit all day sounds awesome to most people and like an ideal life. But unless you actually enjoy drawing and painting and studying you are NEVER EVER going to make it. Picasso said something along the lines of if he was imprisoned without access to art materials he would paint with his saliva or blood or something.

I've been through bouts of low motivation, we all have, but I structure my life AROUND ART, and the ability to have time to draw because I am just that passionate about it. I have been dead broke without a job for long stretches of time and living on a shoestring budget but been totally content in my life because I had time to paint. I have moved to a poor shitty country for years with low cost of living just so that I could have time to draw.

I'm not saying that everyone needs to go to those extremes, but honestly man, if having a shitty job you don't like is stopping you from drawing, and being bored with free time is stopping you from drawing, you're not an artist my dude, and keeping on telling yourself that you will be an artist one day is just prolonging your misery. These people just need to accept that they aren't artists and find a more productive use of their time that they ACTUALLY enjoy doing.

>wanting to be an artist because of image
Especially around this lot..
Here's a way the social hierarchical instinct should be regarded with the same caution/care as the others. A person's image is just that, and the only reasoning for valuing it that I can see, has roots in deceit and mistrust. Why would I want an image, when the very thing is self limiting? It's onerous, anti- meritocratic, anti- individual, anti freedom(in no small way partly due to closed mindedness, but still) It is entirely worthless in and of itself. Even if you say it can be used, it's extraneous, and allows errors to be followed as fact. Just look at what it's done with regards to oversocialization via social media, or better yet- here! You mean to tell me I get to play a game of lowering my standards to the absolute bottom, must work my ass off, and still not even enjoy the supposed pleasures of it? Boyo, sign me up! And that doesn't even address the psychopathy/ sociopathy fostered and incubated here.
But on to you. I feel as though you're speaking somewhat to your own vice here. Why vouch so hard for the work and sacrifice you've proffered, if you're not concerned with what it means to be an artist? Ie, the image of being an artist? An artist to me is someone whose ink/paint/graphite/pixels etc are engaged, whether for five minutes or 50 years. No, it seems to me you're speaking to the lifestyle of taking it on as a career.
Which is tragic, because it would accidentally reinforce the values that led to the very same trap that led your example astray.
>>4180301
Are you making my point for me? As it's not possible to get outside of your own head. Besides the fact, I'm quite sure there's at least a singular case of a coal miner with aspirations somewhere(bit unfair, innit?)

I wish i had creativity or imagination. Its infuriating on top of my lack of skills. I cannot come up with any ideas, and any very rare idea i ever manage to get like once a month it feels like i cannot communicate it. Yet i look back when i was younger like 12 and had such ideas. I feel like whatever creativity or imagination i had were stomped out of me by myself. Its not like i cannot see images in my head but it pretty much has to be its firmly grounded in reality. It feels like i cannoy synthesize any anything out the empirical infomation that i experience even though i know that is how ideas are formed through the interacting with the world around us. At the my very best i can come up with extremely vague ideas of a setting or maybe attributes a character might have such as motives or personality or maybe what they could based on ie plant animal, some type of object. But beyond that, thats where my mind ends. No idea of pose facial details clothing hair emotions, no idea of actualize and convey my thoughts. Hell even if its already something that exists like a character, even a tree or something i dont know what to do with it. Its as if my brain was a mouth that was wired shut and had no idea how to even talk.
I'm going to keep trying to push to improve my skills so it isnt completely ass and try to attempt to learn other artists i like. However it feels like no amount of grinding fundies and trying tomimic others will make me be creative. I want to be able to draw from imagination, if i had any imagination to begin with.

I think I can help. I've seen a lot of dry things from artists at what I'd
consider the "top" of their game that suggest they suffer similarly.
I'll tell you what I think it is in one form or another. It's being too cold to your work(which could stem from being too cold to life- no small part of why I take umbrage with ic's ideals). Think about the artists that are the most colorful, and routinely expressive, what do they have in common? They "play" with it. They fuck around. For some it's a sense of irreverence, vs say in another a sense of cherishing something. But in all cases it's a feeling, derived from a passion. Is your passion in art entirely derived from technique? Doubtful it's even close unless you're hyperrealist or something.
What do you need for imagination? You can only take a concept as far as you can see it, and you can only see it as far you appreciate it. How do you tailor things to what you appreciate? You have to be "warm" to them to begin with. It requires at least a certain amount of sensitivity, which thankfully, like all the rest of this can be exercised and improved.
You can see this in one hit wonders, who after a success, all of a sudden start chasing history, instead of the passion that led them there. You can also see it in the artists I'd call permanently stale.

What can you do in practical terms? For a start, get rid of the extraneous stuff, maybe take a break from a social presence for a while(if you have one), and leave the weight of it behind in so doing. Try being open to your own character and what it's comprised of. Are you too serious? Try just shitting a joke out. Are you too technically focused? Maybe try scribbling some stuff over on /i/, or a drawpile type site. The idea is to find something to play with and embellish it to the point it's really really fun. Like layers on a painting. I think it's also worth pointing out, openness can be exercised irl too, with people, experience, etc.

Diswaying beginners from textured brushes is done to help them think mathematically and develop good habits. Over reliance in textured brushes is a huge problem for beg.
If you can't think of an object in hards and softs texture won't help.
Professional artists in the anime industry use textured brushes, nothing inherintly wrong with them.

I had just loomis myself.
I was going to complain about how my bodies look to stubby and short. Then I heard the voice in my head saying they are not eight-heads tall. One of the most basic rules of drawing the body. I knew this at one point too! Looking back at my sketch book. For the last five months, my bodies have been around six-heads tall. In the beginning they were eight heads tall. I'm not drawing children, I swear, they're suppose to be adults.

>> No.4186490

>>4186455
remember that all loomis material is partially pinup and the 8 head model is idealistic rather than realistic. 7-7,5 head is what most people look like. above all, measure reference when ref studyomg so that you can get a good grip on what good proportions look like - so that you can recall it when drawing from imagination and you wont need to count any heads or anything.

i also used to draw small figures, i went to my first live drawing class and my teacher asked me why i was trying to draw a mutant child when there was a grown ass woman in front of me.

Finally settling into my new wagecuck job but it's been a long while since I've had to manage my time like this. My daily drawing time has been minced and I'm already starting to feel frustrated over that only 2 weeks in. I mainly get 5-6 hour shifts so I draw what I can when I wake up before I go to work. sometimes a little more after I get home if I'm not tired.
Just sort of surprised at how fast my patience with this job drained, I wasn't hung up managing my drawing time in my last job but I'm ready to jump ship at this one. I guess this is at least a confirmation The Artist Work From Home Life is what's suited for me but man, I'll be damned trying to figure how to gain a living wage from Patreon and commissions. As someone who first picked up the pencil with the /ic/ crab mindset, I honestly can't imagine this. Most of the time when drawing I am thinking about how bad it looks unless I am having a (very very rare) period of improving in a short period of time. How do you stop caring about improvement and just draw like a kid? It sounds impossible to me outside of using drugs.

>> No.4188975

I'm not sure how you regain it, other than an active effort to realign your values. Personally, I was one of those annoyingly happy amateurs /ic/ loves to hate.(still am, hurr) I couldn't have been more naive to /ic/s mentality, I came from /i/ expecting people to at least appreciate having fun with it if you didn't have a solid goal.

I don't care about improving on it so much any more, and I think that may be the key. The best drawings I've made, on a factor of happiness were before I came here, and just personally I can't see any amount of skill replacing that.

As a practical step, though, A+ to removing art from anything social(at all). I can vouch for that one, if you have the disposition. Making a joke of it helps too, draw something purely for the humor of it that you don't care about.
Bottom line is to play with it. Why'd you draw something as a kid? Because you thought something was cool or funny and maybe as a gift? That's what it's gotta be about.

Absolutely. There are many "tiers" within which your brain incorporates information. The broader the concept, the longer it takes to fully incorporate. Iktf anon. It's one thing getting hate from outsiders. People who don't know you or understand. It's the ones you trust, and believe to be good people that can fuck you up. Putting your hand and heart out is a risky business. But I still think it's worthwhile. I can't believe otherwise. Life wouldn't be worth it without.
There's a couple things I can think to maybe help. The first is, if you don't hit back and play to the level of people who backstab, then you can set a better example. Never underestimate the unseen effect you can have on people, the bystanders or the people themselves. Maybe they will eventually change, maybe not, but you won't have it on you, and believe me, someone is watching. And second, try to find humble people(whatever form they may take) and you will be set for life for friends. Humility is a good indicator for a lot of things if you think about it.
Lastly, a wound may leave a scar and always be there, but it will subside with time.
Keep the fire lit anon.

It’s Kaxukin and very much real. Anime is the fast food market of this world and turns people’s idea of value upside over.
Soon Wendy’s will be an expensive prospect to our fellow anons as they try to understand Asian lineart.

I dunno if this is nessicarily /vent/, but I’m wondering if anyone else here is in art school right now (RISD in my case) and what their current experience/trials are like - I can say for myself that the work is pretty hard and I’m often stressed, but the access to professional advice, materials, and work environment make it worth it

My self confidence has been in shambles ever since i found this board. I keep forcing myself ti draw for hours but it feels like i can't make a progress, every drawing being worse than the last one. I've never had a high self esteem but it feels like I've hit rock bottom

Nothing wrong with that, most traditional artists don't grind their own paint anymore since it became readily available commercially, as time and technology progress old methods become a waste of time or speciality fields. If the end result is the same or better as if you knew color theory, it's all good.

Money is stupidly tight for me this month. I cant afford the $10 for photoshop right now. I remember that I have sai still and opened that up. I didn't know Huions newer drivers aren't compatible with Sai. I'll try down loading a old driver tomorrow to see if it works. So the night I am too defeated.
