What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.

You may polish it all day but the fact of the matter is that they're still hiding hands. Hands are an important factor for gesture and story telling, communication and the prowess of the draftsman. If you want to gauge the skill of someone observe how they draw the hands in their illustrations and most importantly what they do with them. If the artist is investing more time and effort being creative on hiding the hands to compensate for the lack of skill they are /beg/tier no ifs ands or buts.

Thanks anon, I have been doing quickposes more often lately which is why I thought I’d dedicate some time to face studies (I’ve been told to study facial anatomy.) Love the pose and coloring. But the linework on her body is too thin, so it looks like two separate drawings. Make the important outlines heavier, to match the feel of the whole.
Also, the pockets are in the pants. Have the arms flow into the upper legs, not just suddenly end. And show them going into pockets. It may suit your style to even have bulges indicating how the hands are really jammed in there, maybe indicate that they're tight fists.

Yeah the eyes are flat and i should have gave the whole thing tone like the heart, ill keep those in mind thanks anon. The program im using has a screen tone function but it doesn't have a gradient when you apply it so it kind of limited.

Dont give up on digital, just take a break and draw on a sketchbook And get a cheap starter tablet. I still use my old wacom bamboo, if you can do that with a mouse you'll feel better drawing with a tablet.

Going from traditional to digital is tough. The big hurdle for me was learning the program and getting used to the low friction of a tablet. So, first of all, learn your program bit by bit, and just practice drawing in it. Eventually it just sorta...clicks. But it may take some time. Still way easier than learning how to draw. If you can do that, you can learn digital.
That said, trad just feels right. No need to do pick sides. I still do half my studies and style experiments traditionally. Also, for a good while I found it was easier to start a piece traditionally, scan it, and then finish digitally it, you might try that instead.

Looks great so far but do not stop yet. I do not know how the hell you are capable of painting with 2 different colored shadows I just can't get my head around it. I would change the light to add more contrast and change the highlights a bit, although most of this is just adding more detail and polish.

I would note that the the eye on the right side seem to be more open than the one of the left which might look a bit awkward but I know anime styles that do that so I would guess you were going for that one.

You light source is inconsistent it is all over the place I think it is supposed to come from, below I adjusted some of the picture to reflect this. I moved the whole face a bit higher to reflect that she is looking down towards us since it is a lower shot. Otherwise just tried to adjust the shading on the body and hair overall. Tired adding a better hand but got bored at that.

I wouldn't have noticed the weird ass fingers had you not pointed them out, think of hand gestures as a whole and don't add fingers as an afterthought, it would've looked fine just as a simple "claw" like the other hand.
Anyways, most of the problem is the boring face, it's too generic, it doesn't convey any personality, it's just an assortment of cliched symbols. Also think about how the hair enhances the attitude of the face. You tried to to something unique with the eye lashes with that long eyelash thing but it's really weird, you should stick to eyelash designs that look the same from every angle until you get the hang of making them have some dimension.

Checked. There's videos you can find on scanning your sketches and adjusting the levels to be as close to lineart as possible, then setting it to multiply. As for how to make the digital process 'easier' that depends on what you want to do. Cel-shading, painting, etc. are all things you're going to have to find a way to learn through tutorials and through trial and error. Although the focus should always be drawing.

It's a little distorted and lacking in form, and the shapes don't feel very designed. Her right eye in particular is noticeably smaller than her left, and it doesn't feel intentional because nothing else is quite as distorted. Even with cartoony styles, studying real faces can be useful.

I did a drawover that's not very good but it should convey the idea anyway.
To get to the final drawing, I had to deliberately simplify my shapes from the first drawover. I tried to do everything in as few strokes as possible. I wasn't aiming for your style because I can't draw that way, but I did pick *a* style and I stuck with it, that's the key to getting a design. And I'm applying whatever I do know about perspective and face anatomy. I'd recommend studying faces and thinking more about what you like and dislike in a face, maybe finding some artist interpretations you like. And just experiment.

You could get some nice foundations from taking drawing/ life drawing classes, at least, that's how I went about it.

In terms of personal studying, I went for, Loomis, for head measurement and body proportions, and Hogarth, for hand and feet construction. For the body, in general, I mainly focused on doing master studies (especially Giovanni's Ink studies), but I think studying Vilppu's figure drawings work just as well. You can also take a sketchbook and draw people in public for variety. I usually just go with a brush pen and sometimes a grey color brush to help with line confidence. Hope that info helps anon!

I don't know what history he has here so I can't relate. Going by my experience I will say he's responded to us and our critiques very well. sorry to hear that anon. If it's worth anything of note, life drawing I started off students with a handout showing Michelangelo's David in simple shapes and how they related to each other. It's meant to install the whole, "drawing like a painter" mentality.

Other things consisted of studying sculptures of old masters, copying and making certain notes on skeleton and muscle charts from "Albinus on Anatomy", doing master studies as well starting to understand how foreshadowing/ perspective works, and then working from a nude model.

In life drawing II, we started the class off with making 3-4 quick gesture drawings with india ink and a stick (it makes for interesting line variations). This is sort of where Vilppu's, drawing the head first, then letting the body follow it, comes into play, as well as starting to feel the form of the body. There was work that includes using a 3 color system (charcoal, chalk, and pastel color rust) that helps in understanding mid tones and highlights and applying that to large scale drawings.

So far, those are the major things I remember when I took the classes. I think in the end, it's just a matter of applying a bit more discipline to yourself, since there's no instructor to both point out any mistakes, as well as encourage you to push your drawings a bit further.
