How do you even accidentally draw this when trying to make a kangaroo? What if this is the only kind of shit that goes through Stan's hellscape mind and the only thing that keeps the bad thoughts away are reference photos and construction?

this, i wonder what kind of hell would be let loose if he drew an illustrated story about whatever from imagination

What really surprised me was that it was thoroughly bad in areas that are independent of anatomical correctness. It has bad form, bad balance, and poor sense of life overall. It didn't have to look like a kangaroo to demonstrate drawing ability.

He was trying to invent, so he didn't want to draw a kangaroo.
He wanted to draw "some kind of creature, with shapes like... like a kangaroo".

Where does this meme come from?

You can see how awkward it gets between the old guy and stan whenever drawing from imagination is brought up on their podcast.
Stan gets super passive agressive whenever people imply that just copying something from a ref isn't that impressive or that being able to draw from imagination should be the goal for every serious artist.

So there's a well-known artist called Stan Prokopenko who has many online lessons on drawing. Mostly human anatomy, gesture, and figure drawing etc.

If you ever went to youtube to get lessons on drawing you've probably been recommended one of his videos.
During a stream about drawing from imagination (seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOuIgevbHs8)) he decided to make an imaginary animal.

He never actually said he wanted it to be a kangaroo, that was a comment someone made during the Livestream after he drew the creature that he read. They said it looked "kind of kangaroo-like" Nonetheless the thing looks kind of silly and a lot of people have made memes to poke fun at Prokos lacking skill in drawing creatures from imagination.

The even happens at 39:00 in the first link but here's another video that compiled the most important pieces.

The meme has sort of evolved into being about how he'll never make it or other such nonsense. I think the only real take away is that artistic skill is multifaceted and you have to train for everything you care about in art goals as oppose to practicing certain things and hoping the skill transfer will cover everything for you. Proko is an incredibly talented artist, he drew all of the related pic aside the inserted meme, he just never really practiced drawing from imagination or character design and that explains the lack of competency. If you asked a Disney animator to draw a car of an architect to draw a cartoon character you'd probably see some real guff ups but that doesn't mean those people aren't talented in art. If you are interested in drawing creatures from imagination, don't stick just to realistic drawings of people, caricatures, or rendering shapes in realistic lighting.

Also, don't let this overwhelm you too much. If you don't feel like you have enough time to practice everything you need to, it's okay to pick a thing and just start there. This advice is meant to scare people into feeling they can never practice everything they need to or that there isn't value in learning how to draw from reference, just that if there is something you know you want to be able to do art wise at some point, make sure to set aside time eventually to do some of that.
Proko says himself in the video that he waited to draw from imagination last. That's not an invalid way of going about things if your goal is doing realistic renditions of models, but it goes against what a lot of people here are trying to do which is stuff like anime or their own OCs etc. It would be good to also set aside time for drawing from imagination.

Guys shitting on Proko is fun, but we don't need 10 of these threads a day. Laughing at the failure of others feels good, but it doesn't actually help you draw better.

Almost anyone other than absolute /beg/s can draw a better kangaroo from imagination than that. Proko's kangaroo is hilarious, but you shouldn't let it give you some false sense of superiority. Being able to make stuff better than this absolute failure doesn't mean you're any good either.

Let me put it this way.
You show someone what could happen if you only focus on 1 thing and slack off on everything else so they won't make that mistake.
Did that clear up what i meant?

There probably wouldn't be this many hate threads about him if his stans hadn't tried to plug his for-profit course in every thread about figure drawing and gesture, or defend his obvious shortcomings in those areas. I don't like it when memes overtake serious discussion, but there are grains of truth to these criticisms that ought to be made known to the constant influx of newcomers.
