This is the best one because you limited your color palette. Sunsets are pretty but there’s also a lot of beauty in the flat light of a blue sky. Don’t try to inject majesty into all of your work because it tends to make them overblown. Simplicity often has much more merit than complexity, and enhances the parts that you would like to draw attention to.

I’ve started sketching with charcoal directly onto the panel. Drawing is still really hard so it’s super messy (pic related)but it disappears with my oils. But these are just exercises so there’s that. Gonna try charcoal transfer( trace initial drawing, rub charcoal onto back of tracing paper, transfer) Then I might use India ink to fortify lines afterward. Not sure.

Small thing I did today because I couldn’t work on my two other things cause they are still wet and I NEED to be painting as much as possible. This is the first pass. I’m trying to keep with the practice going from big to little. It’s still a mystery to me if I’m learning anything or not so I’m just gonna keep painting I guess and fix some panel surface issues (absorbency) and then continue on with exercises in the book I’m going thru.

FUCK! I kinda figured it was best that I have no teacher due to the likelihood of me being stubborn and not listening but now I wish there were somebody looking over my shoulder and telling me what to do.

What are you painting in?
Acrylic you can go from a wet paper towel in a Tupperware up to space age sponges in specifically designed air tight containers.
For oils glass is top tier for a stationary setup.
Any light wood for held pallets. Season it by sanding gently with fine grit sandpaper then use a rag+oil and let dry, repeat a few times before using it. Reapply as necessary if your coating gets damaged, you can tell because wood fibers will start being fuzzy on the surface.
Gouache/watercolor literally anything that is smooth enough and won't absorb water.

>>4156315
Your lighting isn't consistent. Think about where the light is indicated for the wall vs the stairs and what kind of geometry/lighting angle would cast that shadow on the stairs.
Try sketching this scene in 3/4 perspective real quick and adding the light source.

Wow guys. I really appreciate the feedback and encouragement. I’ve been painting, well, trying to figure out how to start since August. I tried painting a foot about a year ago and some kind anon told me to take a year and learn to draw. I still struggle with drawing to the point I almost hate it. I hate that I hate it. I gave up on my last drawing and decided to do something with simple shapes and cool values and try to learn how to apply oil paint.

I wrote a lengthy post to this but I was banned once again for no reason. The colors look good, I think it would look better if there were not as many random strokes making random value changes in the sky. I think it takes the emphasis off the great colors of the moon and brings the sky too forward instead of letting the moon be dominant. Other than that, dude, keep these night paintings coming. And your last couple of podcasts were pretty funny too.

Want me to tell you my secret?
Not really a secret but here’s what I did..
I drew, sightsize, the eye plate and 3 faces from the other plate (Bargue Plates) the one profile face plate with like 15 or so face profiles.
I stood back, looked, then went up to draw from memory.
I did the eye plate and the partial face plate till I got them perfect, meaning line thickness and everything. I watched The DaVinci Initiative vids on how to do them but I stood up and did them sightsize walking back and forth.
Then I drew, from life, a white iPhone box, white bowl, white ball in a still life setup from life in a shadow box. It sucked. Did it again. Made myself get it right. Values/ shading perfect. All this sightsize.
Then I bought a plastic skull off amazon and put it into my shadow box and drew it 3/4.
The proportions sucked. Turned it profile and spent about 4 months getting it right. Drawing every day between 2 to 7 hours, mostly drunk desu due to my back pain.
I still suck at drawing but now I can see. I understand values. And now colors and temperature are falling into place. My next painting will be focused on painting light.
A metal jug on the same book I had the skull on.
Working on the drawing now.

>> No.4161953

>>4161946
P.s. I suck at drawing because I don’t keep a sketch book and never do fast drawings or sketches. I hope to change this in the future but idk. That step/ archway was obviously simple to draw due to the shapes and the fact that I drew it from photo reference. But even drawing a book 2 feet away from me, getting the angles right and the length of the lines right still stumps me. Maybe because I’m not doing my new drawing sight size. I’m standing at the drawing board/easel and remaining stationary so I can do the same when I paint. Comparative measuring/drawing is, I think, less limiting than sightsize, but sightsize has helped me see and be my own critic. Anyway....

Good work anon. I remember your previous efforts.
Just a word, don't underestimate the difficulty once colour/hue and saturation get into the mix. Deciding where to make choices in changed with those, as well values choices, will make your work a whole world more difficult. Take your time with the value stage.

Noted. I always get excited and pumped and a little full of myself till the next time at the easel:)
But what I was trying to get across is that by sticking to a drawing till completion, I learned tons...... probably the main thing was the NEED for the drawing to be right before the picture/ painting can look good at all.
I’m amazed at people who have been painting for decades who still haven’t taken the time to learn values, how light works, the importance of it to the readability of an image. Color is seductive and whispers that it will make everything alright and it will fix it all. It’s funny and I just thought of this.... take your typical abstract expressionist MFA today and they will paint a figure or a landscape with about the same results as granny who who never learned to draw but has been painting for 30 years. Only difference is color usually. At least that’s what I’ve seen. Well and pretentiousness:)

Your enthusiasm is unexpected, but charming.
Right now it kinda looks to me like the eyes are concave rather than convex. I think that could be a cool effect if you pushed it further. Maybe put some slight folds or wrinkles on the twist of the neck so it looks like feather textured skin instead of actual feathers? Those might be too obvious, not sure how subtle you're going for.

I wondered about your comment about my enthusiasm for a bit. I was excited someone got what I am trying to portray, not the phenomena itself. It was about 18/20 inches tall or so, and about 12 or so inches in wide. A cylinder. I was at a party, walked out of a short kinda hallway leading out of an open patio into a parking lot and noticed a bright light above. In my mind it thought, when did they install a streetlight right above this building? Boom! From being stationary, it shot out, parallel to the ground, about 15 feet away, like paused and stuttered, then blinked or went out.
I saw the same thing, along with another person, about a month later, shooting in a parallel line about 200 feet above the street, in a straight line and then do the same thing, stop on a dime, stutter, then blink out.
Did a little more. Not as loose. Gotta refine some lines that strayed (head).
Still got more to do to the eyes. Yup I am, or thought about, making the eyes seem like black pits sucking in.

About 4 years but desu an average person could get there noticeably sooner by studying basic perspective, (you'll need to be able to do 2-point competently) dexterity, and form rendering. I don't really paint so you won't "need" it but it'll help you a lot. Think of painting as "drawing with paint" and drawing as "painting with ____" Prismacolor markers are great for tone (exercises too).

Treat practice like a workout. Do targeted work for a dedicated amount of time. NOT ADHD sporadic 10 minute segments, loosely connected by wherever you were thinking of at the time. No, you don't need to do it all day, but you can if you want you. You probably don't need to until 2 hours a day isn't enough.

Master studies, copies, etc are a must. If you want to learn more than 1 thing in a lifetime, you have to get it from someone else. You might as well get your info from someone skilled.

Don't be an idiot meatball like me 5 years ago and try to draw things from your head without having studied or memorized them at all. Also, watch process videos to save time and get better ideas. Whether or not you are, your competition is.

Any feedback? I'm pretty new to watercolors and I'm not really sure how to approach subjects like these with them. How to define detail and control tone and how to fill in areas of color without them overflowing, bleeding into other areas. It's done on an A5 paper. Should I work bigger for details, it it impossible to define them on this scale? Should I use Ink or maybe strong pencil drawing? Any other tips would be appreciated. So this looks like you mixed ivory and titanium to get your grays (or equivalent). That gives it a really cold and dead look without any vibrance whatsoever. In my opinion you should never do that. At the very least mix two colors to get your grays. As you are not perfect you will have some variations in hue which makes the painting so much more interesting. Usually people use Burnt Umbra and Ultramarine Blue to mix dark blacks. Mixing in more umbra will get you warmer blacks, mixing in more blue will get you colder blacks. Even when your original is black/white, it really helps to make your painting pop to use slightly colder shadows and warmer highlights (or the other way around depending on what you are going for).

There are also some errors in relative values, like you overemphasizes local contrasts and lost track of the bigger picture. That makes the whole thing look flat, like a relief. I believe this may have something to do with you not having enough control over the values while mixing, i.e. your colors are too strong. Maybe premix some shades of gray before putting it on the canvas.

Beyond that, be more economical with your brushstrokes. You seem to be going for a rough kind of look. If you want that, you need to be way more deliberate, i.e. really think about the different shapes and surfaces and put in color accordingly. Right now you are very inconsistent with your brushwork, sometimes it looks very linear, I see some hatches, sometimes it looks like you moved paint around after it was almost dry, sometimes it looks like you are glazing. That looks kind of insecure and confused, like you weren't sure where this is going ahead of time.

Compare them to the original and observe your systematic mistakes (and by compare I mean, really take your photo, layer it on top of the original in Photoshop or whatever and go back and forth). You look like you use a lot of clichéd shapes for the eyes, nose and mouth, which makes it look more routined and technical, but also less expressive and accurate. So the proportions are really off by a lot, but I guess that is obvious to you, just looking at it. Getting that right is just a matter of consistent practice, so keep practicing.

My main advice has to do with composition and being more aware of your motive. Right now the overall texture of your drawing is very muddy and same-ish. There is no sense of layers in it. You clearly have a background and to foreground objects in your setup. Try to make sure that there is a clearer sense of separation between the two, even if that means you have to exaggerate your values a bit. Make sure it is clear what is the focus of attention and what doesn't really matter. See pic, it's rough, but that is what I mean. Simply by moving the values in the background and the foreground further apart, there is a clearer sense of spatial arrangement.

Eyo Brian/oil painting people:

Will it fuck up the paint film if I use a hairdryer with low heat or no heat to speed up drying time? I painted a thing on board but I need to ship it in a week and a half. I didn't use any solvent and it's like 90% titanium white, so that shit isn't gonna be dry to the touch by then if I just let it go all normal-like.

>>4182166
Youre doing well not to mess with color for a bit. The #1 thing that will give you a jump in appeal is using shadow shapes to define forms instead of lines. You can use both, but your work will be strongest if you can use shadow alone, that way you can use line only where it is most appropriate. Copy a few bargue plates with sight-size method, spend no less than 5 hours on each. Also draw bigger, work on 12x16 paper.

Heat doesn’t dry oils the same way it dries acrylics as far as I know. You’d be better off just letting it dry on its own and try to apply less next time, especially something like white oil paint. It doesnt work like that, you just have to have to wait and be patient.

In theory heat could speed up the reaction time but your really playing with fire and could ruin the painting or make the surface unstable for further layers.

Upto you anon. Personally I would just give it a week and make sure your next layer is fatter than the one you are painting over to avoid cracking.

Something unfinished that I haven't worked on for a very long time (years).

This has a beautiful texture to it. And your sketches have lots of character.

Thumbnail is really nice because the colour and values are well chosen. Wish it wasn't so sloppy.

Nice sense of form.

This has such a great feeling to it even though the craft is not so good. People don't appreciate the depressing beauty of sulfur lit office parks. Reminds me of Hopper.

Needs more hue range. Digits 4 and 5 on bottom hand are too big, digit 3 too small.

Stars/moon and figure are competing for dominance, moon in bad place compositionally, get reference for figure. Clouds should be somewhat behind and maybe in front of parts of figure for depth.

Try to use natural, diffused light. Interior space lit by daylight can work as long as sun is not shining directly on it. Hold the piece in front of you at various angles until you can't see the glare. Don't use flash or interior lights.

>even though the craft is not so good

I think some of the problem with me and gouache is that I'm scared to go thick enough with it. I'm still thinking like a watercolor painter.

I need to look at how traditional Anime BG artists handle buildings with large/flat shapes. I know they're using poster colors not gouache, but the effect is very similar.

Gouache is tough. I think it would look great if you took this as a study, did a more precise drawing, and painted neatly over that, keeping the same colours and values. But sometimes a study just stays a study and doesn't have to develop into anything.

Careful changing the level of transparency, though, you'll lose the grainy effect and the feel of the picture will actually change a lot. Might be good, though.

keep in mind the thicker you go the harder it will be to layer on top without mixing with whats underneath.

I've heard that artist make what they feel because it is a form of expression. What could be said about this I've just made I don't know for sure, all I know is I'm feeling a lot lately.

That you're an angsty teen edgelord.

Not bad for a beginner, though, keep practicing fundamentals.

There are no shortcuts, you'd have to do the same as the rest of us; draw after the masters, following their technique.
