IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

You need to learn anatomy, also you keep making legs too short.
Face was wayyy too crooked on yours even for stylization.
Here ya go, compare the position of the hips relative to the upper chest. I shifted everything to the right because otherwise she has an awkward position.

>> No.4140958

I haven't even started, I need guidance, and the sticky doesn't seem to be geared towards someone as bad as I am. The "beginner" resources I've looked through so far inexplicably contain no information at all about the basic mechanical skills needed to draw and how to learn them. I don't need to cure my symbol drawing, learn to "see like an artist," or to start dabbling with construction: I need to learn how to draw a damn line. How am I supposed to do anything else if I can't place lines with any sort of accuracy? I already know from experience that I won't improve at all unless I have a good understanding of what I'm supposed to be doing.

Thus far, though, I haven't found any resources covering this topic. People in every culture across the world have been drawing for thousands of years, and yet the total accumulated sum of human wisdom on this subject appears to be "use your shoulder more than your wrist, bro." Are there some resources I'm overlooking, or am I just so terrible that I'm struggling with things other people master without any thought or effort?

Watch the angle of the feet. If you do it yourself you'll see how uncomfortable it is to keep your legs turned out the opposite ways like that. Also watch the length of the arms, the arm w/ scroll is too short from the bicep area.

Head is MASSIVE compared to the body. The body is good, I like that, but the head is MASSIVE. I love the size of the hands though, most beginner artists tend of the side of making hands tiny, so I love how big they are.

Thanks for the links. Things that start the learning process at "this is how you hold a pencil" are absolutely what I think I need right now. I don't usually require this sort of hand-holding when learning a new skill, but nothing about drawing clicks with me. I spent a lot of time attempting to learn to draw as a teenager, and I achieved nothing. Not only did I fail to improve, I came to realize that I was worse at drawing than literally anyone I had ever met, including people who hated drawing and did it as little as possible.

>>4140996
Based on the name and memes, I was under the stupid impression that drawabox literally consisted of drawing boxes forever until you magically learned something. I also generally prefer books to online resources (and especially to videos) so that's what I gravitated towards first from the resources listed in the sticky. It actually looks like a fairly reasonable approach to drawing.

>>4140999
This is very much the sort of thing I was looking for, thanks.

Time to do some practicing and see if it actually seems possible for me to approve. Getting to the level of the least-skilled people I've seen here is pretty much my end-goal: everyone who posts their work here is completely amazing by my standards.

This is really good. I would just say that the cheekbone shape is wrong and the eyebrow ridge should be a bit more prominent. (or the eye bulges out a bit too far.) Ear might be a teeny bit too far back for that angle of the head. The back side of the neck shouldn't have that bump. Even the seventh cervical vertibrae isn't really shaped that way. I stopped drawing half-way through because I wasn't sure if I should continue or just end the video on "And how war never really changes". There's still audio there though, so if you're interested after that point just start playing it in another tab or something.

That comes from mileage. Construction is helpful for people who arent sure about proportions and placement. Art should be something you enjoy, but if you can't draw up to your standards it can be very frustrating and unenjoyable experience. Nice sketches, they look comfy, but what (You) need to work on is perspective and how far away things are relative to the “camera”. Things that are farther away should be drawn lighter, and it kinda looks like in your first drawing, the field near the viewer is directly joined with the hills, making the road seem like it’s shrinking like *snap* that. That’s just an example, also if (You) need to do chicken scratch to get the desired line shape that’s fine too.

Hi. This is a contest entry in progress. The rules are black white and green only. I’ve been doing several glazes on it and I’ve learned a lot. My plan for the next glaze once it’s dry is to do the center with pthalo green and a darker color as I move from the center to the edges. I’m thinking that I want to keep the left side darker than the right. To get the darker I’m going to put alizarin crimson into the thalo green. I will also be glazing the water with straight thalo and the I will redo the edges of the mountains and rocks. I was going for a glowing effect but I can’t seem to make it happen. Either way. This one has been a real learning experience. It’s also the first time I’m entering an art contest.
All comments welcome. Shred it if you feel the need. I’ve got thick skin.

Make the overlapping lines a bit thicker than the lines behind it.

Being "the best" shouldn't be your goal. As other anon has said, there will always be someone better than you. You will never be "the best". It's not only impossible to be better than everyone else, but improving is something you do until the day you die. You'll never reach the top and be done. It's a nonsense goal. The trick is to have your improvement be a secondary goal and have a primary focus that drives you on a personal level.

Most painters approach hair this way. Shape design, values, and edge hardness are prioritized. Without irony, Andrew Loomis' paintings are fantastic examples of how hair is done in golden age illustrations.

I know some people might want to bring up artists like Ruan Jia or Krenz, but they also build on top of really cleanly defined value shapes. The strands they paint are for adding texture, not structure.

Hard round brush in conjunction with a large, low opacity round eraser to shape them. You can do this in any of the major software packages. Learn what you can do with basic opacity/flow and size controls before special brushes. All of this was done with a single round brush.
