My progress from 2017 to 2019. Looking over my portfolio/galleries again and again helped me stop being a renderhog. I used to put a lot of emphasis on 'perfect' CG lighting and color that my subjects were boring and in my comfort zone all the time. The Mario character in 2017 for instance was a lot of my studies and "finished" work for the entire year, which made my work dull and lifeless. So I stopped and decided to do some environment studies and go learn about things like dynamic figure drawing and composition. I'm still making progress but I think my work will eventually be full of life and motion.

I wish I knew, there are probably more efficient ways than whatever I'm doing, anyways ye
I went through the Loomis, and Proko's figure drawing series (I don't like the anatomy one very much it's all over the place).
I did several tons of figure drawing from Croquis Cafe and photos, I think most of what I'm doing now is drawing the muscle shapes from memory after so many figure drawings. What i find most helpful is having a collection of references at hand, just to have a body to look at to remind me what it looks like. Other helpful things a 3d anatomic model, the book anatomy for sculptors and watching wrestling or other sports. The muscle shapes is mostly playing with shapes and proportions and finding what makes me doki doki.

2016: basically started drawing, all the digital stuff is unfinished because i had no motivation
2017: still no motivation but I thought that i was doing good for some reasons
2018: started grinding anatomy because I realized that i sucked hard, i poured more energy end effort in fundamentals. not bad but I could have drawn so much more.
2019: i did okay at best this year, i got a bit better maybe at drawing clothing and stuff but not a significant improvement imho.
still can't draw backgrounds, my drawings don't tell a story, most of my poses are still a bit stiff, anatomy is not that great.

i'll do my best to end this year at least with more knowledge about clothing and better linework. I'd love to learn how to colour better also, learn perspective, and draw more from imagination.

this is a good progress and i can see you are doing better with colors already (example: 2019 -> wooden horns and blueish shadows on that red top). time to push your values more anon, change your artwork to black and white and find areas where you can create brighter lights or deeper shadows to improve the overall contrast. if you dont have a good idea about values yet just look for value tutorials online as there are thousands of them. you need to know & understand these terms: direct light, ambient light, core shadow, reflected light in shadow areas, cast shadow.

colors:
watch this weird video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gk3JhHSkvAI long and somewhat cringy but has really good color versus light knowledge explained simply. its way easier than reading a james gurney book for a beginner.

then watch these 2 videos if you havent already:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LhcNbFMkTw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwLQ0cDb4cE&t=431s
but really take notes here. watch it like you're supposed to have a fucking art theory exam tomorrow. you need to understand what he's saying, not just listen to it.

when you finish watching these, open an artwork from an artist you admire and try to explain out loud why lights and shadows have certain colors. if you cannot, go back to videos.

time to apply these principles:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ErI7gIWzxlY
this video literally shows you how to pick good colors from the color wheel.

perspective: i believe drawabox is still a very good source. if you do the boxes lessons and the 250 box challenge i dont think its possible to still struggle with perspective. (unless you do these mindlessly)

anatomy: I think its safe to learn Hampton, draw from reference using the hampton method and then try to draw from imagination using what you remembered from your reference drawing sessions.

proko is alright for value and gesture but keep in mind he cannot draw ANYTHING from imagination

im counting on you anon

It's all about the face, anon.
It was ugly before too, but it was still simplified enough that it would be forgivable as style.
As you got more detailed, the ugly bits started to be a nuisance.
No need to go full anime, but do research what's pleasant about it, and look for other widely acclaimed Western artstyles and what's their appeal.
If they're not "realistic" like some comics, they'll probably be on the cute side or the bimbo side.

I'm also assuming you're a girl, cause that's generally where a lack of tact about what's cute (in a "I want to protect this smile" way) comes from.

Last tip, refrain from having just open/closed hands. Try to give your characters something to do with their hands even if you don't have a story. Make a couple poses in front of a mirror/cam and think of something, it's not hard and adds a lot to a drawing.
It's funny seeing how each step of the progress has one hand fewer in her pockets on each iteration, speaks a lot about your confidence levels. Use that confidence to hone your aesthetic and you'll get there. On a technical level it's undeniable you've progressed.

I'm the quoted anon, btw. Your reply broke my smug shitposting attitude, so here's my honest opinion.
Cheers!

I think I'm gonna start grinding those fundies, lads.

Alright, here you go. I picked images that deal with the same subject matter for better comparison. The first two were drawn on my 3DS on the Colors! 3D drawing app, while the most recent one was drawn with that one tiny intuos tablet (intuos draw? I can't remember) on paint tool SAI. Ah, and the latter two drawings are unfinished; I literally was working on that last one yesterday and am going to finish it. I'm having fun with it, surprisingly.

>>4137781
It's not so much that I can't find people who can offer proper critique, the real problem is that I just rarely ever draw. After 2013 I drew very very few finished things, I can only remember two off the top of my head: one from 2016 (I think?) and one from 2018.
During all this time I've focused much more on pixel art instead, since it has actual practical use for me and I'm more comfortable doing it. The non-pixel stuff I make is mostly doodles or sketches to base my pixel art off of.
That last pic is supposed to be a new discord avatar and also whatever other form of social media I decide to partake on (twitter, I guess). I want to open up commissions because I think money is going to be a pretty good incentive to making me actually draw stuff.

Ah, I know this reply has gotten quite long already, but I would appreciate it if anyone here would be so kind as to offer me some critique (that, of course, doesn't mention issues that are obviously there because the thing is unfinished).
Here's some stuff I'm aware that needs fixing because it's the most glaring:
The forehead is a bit too small, the pinky should be moved a bit closer to the ring finger, the jacket needs more creases, the collar of the shirt should deform in the area where it meets the clavicle otherwise it won't make any sense, the shadow cast on the shirt by the jacket should probably be "longer", and the tip of the ring finger seems a bit too flat.

Seriously analyzing the color choices of artist I admire made me improve my color a lot. I guess I would call my before picture "symbol coloring". Just like how beginner artists will always draw what they *think* an eye looks like, beginner painters might paint what they *think* the color of an eye is. For me, an obvious example is in the before pic I used to assume "eye whites are white". You are probably doing this for a lot of things you paint, take note of it. Pic related is so you can break out of thinking a skin tone is the same shade in every lighting- those colors at the bottom are from using the eyedropper tool on each face. You can paint fair skin using any color...you can paint anything using any color, if that makes sense. Sorry, I'm not a good teacher.

Marco Bucco (https://www.youtube.com/user/marcobucci/videos)) explains everything better- even if you don't care for his paintings that much I highly recommend his videos about color. I still have a long way to go with it and my values are still really bad, so once again I recommend looking to higher-skilled artists.

Here it goes, is not much anything at the mo. I want to improve my design badly but I always end up with boring shapes.

>>4140080>>4140469
Not sure what makes you think I'm tracing anything. I picked up Scott's How to draw last year, those things are build upon what is taught there and Peter han exercises of making geometry overlaps, then some perspective book on casting shadows, although I do them freestyle so they aren't technically correct.
And I've done a lot of drawing from imagination, that's how I started drawing, exclusively, 8 years ago. But I hit a wall a few years after that, that's how I came upon ic, conceptart.org, and all that. Started doing studies, life-painting, I dunno, lots of potholes, lost interest during my 3rd year and dropped it for about 4 years, I did draw on and off but no studies or daily practice. I decided to pick it back up last year seriously again.

I pretty much try to follow Rapoza tips now, focus on drawing something, then do studies on what isn't working, try again, but my willpower really sucks.
Which brings me back to wanting to find study groups or something. Sorry for the blogpost.

Late reply, sorry about that! What I'd recommend is just painting a lot. Do a lot of value studies of objects and forms, knowing how light and shadow works. If you already are painting and know how that works, you can begin to play with shapes and form. For beginner lessons on digital painting, I recommend Matt Kohr's painting videos and courses. Advanced, I recommend Sam Nielson.

>>4138404
Thanks for the compliment but I'm not sure if I can provide a satisfactory answer. What I've been doing all this time is lots of pixel art and drawing, sketching and doodling things on and off on my notebook or whichever other paper I have near me, sometimes with periods of months doing absolutely nothing. I "decided" to take drawing more seriously at around 2016 but, really, all I did from then up until now was just watching art-related youtube videos and reading small parts of some books. I'd sometimes follow some tutorials when sketching and doodling, too.

>>4138658
Aight that's stretching it. Maybe that's an impression caused by the very small amount of images I put in that pic, so I went through the pain of making a new more detailed one. I decided to stick to pieces that are finished to mostly finished. You can see that my output was the most prolific during 2013. From 2016 onward I've been using a graphics tablet, which definitely helped a lot. I guess this year is the one I've been the most focused on getting better because I [gasp] even read some loomis here and there; from 2012 to 2014 I didn't study fundies at all lmao, at most I'd look up tutorials and leave it at that.

Sorry if the image is too tiny; filesize limits and all that.

These have to be female artists. I refuse to say these are men because of how they mostly are adventurous and try new things. Also the people that suck up to them have to be desperate wanting some pussy.
>>4135613
The main issue anon is that females are afraid of failure and wanting to learn from it. Men kind of have a similar issue where they do not think they will get good if they make a few bad mistakes on their first artwork. The main issue is to keep learning to adventure outward and just keep learning. Keep trying to be better in some way than your previous submission even if it is shading, even if it is perspective, or it is color theory, form etc, if its too complex start simple and do it over again. You get better as you keep doing something and keep practicing. Not overnight but in a span of time.

These have to be females. I have noticed this a lot that they are afraid to go out of their comfort zone(most of them at least), and adventure outward. Men only have the issue of not realizing that you get better in time, and not on your first piece. As you keep submitting artwork and improving on your last release in some way like Form,Shading, Color theory, perspective, poses etc. You do get better and it gains mileage your mind will adapt and learn how to do things more efficiently the more you keep doing something. Eventually you will become a greater artist.
>>4135613
>>4135961
Mostly the issue is that they need to be criticized and told their art needs to be improved, while at the same time praising other aspects. It is a balancing act especially those with fears of moving outside the comfort zone. The other problem is that they are stubborn and they are children with unreasonable mindsets.

I read/watch a lot of stuff, but I tend to stop after a few chapters. Sometimes I revisit books and skim to specific chapters dealing with things I want to push further. Things that helped me the most are
>Vilppu drawing manual
>Gurney's Color and Light
>Erik Olson's perspective class on NMA
>Ctrlpaint for photoshop basics
I also experiment a lot with photoshop and learning how to use it not only for painting but for image manipulation and special effects. There are cool things you can do with adjustments, filters and blending layers.

But now most of my studying is done from photos or other artists rather than books. I spend about as much time studying random objects, animals and buildings as I do furries and figures. Occasionally I'll gather up a bunch of artwork from one artist and spend a few hours studying their work, but I try to do different artists each time.

bro. its good that youre going for dynamic posing. But mein gott the anatomy and the perspective in this hurt like hell. sketch a few skeletons n shit. arm cant really bend that way, it doesnt rotate at the shoulder that way, its floating on the side of the ribcage and connected to the sternum and back by the collarbone and the omoplate. Which means if you want the arm pointing in that direction the whole torso would get pulled to the side a bit more, and also the perspective would kick in a bit. its hard to draw limbs from straight on perspective until you know exactly whats going on, its really just a series of tongs grabbing each other though.

You're progress is good! I would kind of break things down more-- instead of attempting fully rendered pieces every time you sit down to work, spend time just focusing solely on anatomy, figure drawing, gesture, etc. Your anatomy isn't strong. It's better for you to have 100 unfinished drawings right now than 5 fully rendered paintings. Good direction though., keep it up!
