How does one play the social media art game? Is it really just well timed drawings of flavor of the month waifus? Or is it just luck and skill that lead to many artists garnering thousands of followers so quickly?

>Getting noticed by a bigger fish and being put in the spotlight
>consistent schedule or good work ethic so people know they'll keep seeing new stuff from you
>posting during the high traffic times of your region
>drawing flavor of the month, especially in a unique style
>doing fanart of bigger artist's characters who reblog/retweet/like/etc it
>interacting with other artists or influencers when the opportunity rises, which can be done by always commenting on their posts

Are all off the top of my head, probably helps too if what you draw isn't too abstract or off-putting either.

Where does this conventional wisdom come from? It makes intuitive sense, and it probably can't hurt, but it kinda feels like people are just repeating it after a while. Is it based on your personal experiences? I can think of several Twitter artists who don't post regularly who have pretty high follower accounts because their stuff is just good quality (not easy to churn out daily or weekly) and/or their style is unique. Maybe it's different on Instagram or whatever though.

It's important to post art consistently and frequently just because not every single thing you draw is going to be successful and gain traction. It's a quantity thing more than anything. Think of each drawing you post as being a chance to get more people to see your work. The more works you post, the more chances you get. Even works of sub-par quality have a chance of resonating with people and helping you find a bigger audience.
This is more important if you're a more unknown artist, as popular artists can skim by with infrequent posting.

A good part of it is just getting a spotlight shone on you at the right time. Capturing flavors of the month and connecting with the right people.

Even more important is sticking to doing that one thing and staying in that area. People love "fandom artists" and rarely care when they leave that bubble.

That's been my mistake. I've struck gold a few times on Twitter, just by complete accident. Unfortunately, I like posting at my own pace and don't like doing the same subject matter too many times in a row, so I end up with a followers who don't care about the other stuff I make.

I don't like gaming the social media system just to get attention. Makes me feel manipulative. I'd rather just become good enough that people stick around to see what I make, rather than to see if I make more art for fandom x, y or z.

A lot of what's been said in this thread (>>4132297 >>4132336 etc) is pretty much it. It's a usually a combination of all the factors, or alternately two or three with a dash of good luck.

Another way is to get into a niche. I have an acquaintance who doesn't post very regularly on the big social media platforms but is still very popular, because he draws a very niche subject which a lot of people treat as a fetish. Before he started drawing it he had maybe 1k - 2k followers since he started posting art of that subject, he's ended up with about 70k in about four months.

Being buddy-buddy with other big name artists or ""influencers"" is also a good way to get a foot in the door, though requires prior friendships/connections and/or networking. Unsurprisingly everytime I get retweeted by a popular account, my follower count massively increases.

In a similar vein, drawing fanart of big YouTubers who regularly retweet or show off art they've received in videos isn't a bad way to get your name out there and catch a few eyes. Whether you care about their content a lot or not, but that can be kind-of exploitative, using their platform to get your own leg up - so if you do it obviously, it can come off and make you look like an attention whore.

Yes you can. That's basically all of marketing - getting people to notice your product and to want to buy it. Art isn't that much different from selling any other product. There's many strategies you can use to increase your reach on social media to potential buyers.

Some artists go as far to pay for advertising on relevant websites. How hard would a video game or movie bomb if there was only a little time and money put into marketing? The same would happen to your artwork - very few would be exposed to it.

You guys have the action lines all wrong. You imagine its along the spine, cuz thats wut loomiz sez or whatever.
In OP's picture, the action lines are the perspective lines of the hips and shoulders receding into the distance and the composition is completed by the verticals of the chest and legs.

Its not about the body, its about the structure of space. Thats why the 'corrected' version here >>4132896 looks so dynamically dead.

You keep saying "pp big", but I don't think you know what it means...

There's litteraly no reason which would make OP more sexy/attractive than the "revised" version, since they contain exactly the same elements. So it being better and more dynamic is objectivly only due to the bendiness.

It's not better or more dynamic, it's just pp big
I'm not the guy who made the revised version and I think the only way to make this shit better would be to not draw it, but that version looks more natural. I don't give a shit about the edit. The pose in OP is garbage and you are blind, retarded or both. No vaguely accurate throwing pose looks like this you stupid jerkoff. I am drawing baseball pitchers right now, none of them bend over 90 degrees while lifting their heads up and keeping their feet wide apart on the ground, at the end of the throw the back is arched down, not up and the legs are respectively leading and lifting off the ground, to accompany the force that the other jerkoff mentioned.
There is nothing remotely similar in the spastic flailing pose in the OP to an actual throwing motion except she's holding a fucking ball, you can try it with your own fucking two hands for fuck's sake, throw something against the wall, possibly something that might bounce back and send you in an irreversible coma. Every single "keyframe" in the animation that you are trying to piece up in your jizz filled piece of shit brain looks nothing like the OP, and even if you managed to find a picture of the exact same pose in your recollection of down syndrome baseball league, OP still looks like fucking shit to anyone with eyes to see, and that foreshortening is /beg/ tier.

I dont find it sexy.
It does have a very strong feel of action that a realistc treatment wouldn't.
Your argument ad absurdum is obvious troll, all things in art are about finding the right balance.
Still, it brings up the question of how far is too far.
As a consumer I care zero about accuracy.
If something gives me a feel, thats what is good art. If somebody's butt is in the wrong place, it can detract from the piece - but only because it draws attention from the things in the piece make it a good piece. Errors that add perceptual energy to the focus of the piece ARE NOT ERRORS. At least in the context of the individual piece. If it has to dovetail into a larger theme - like concept art - they may still functionally be errors.
About the loopy-ness, if it distracts from the feel, yeah its bad - but in the right context it can get quite absurd. Cartoons are an obvious example. I enjoy illustrations of Mr Fantastic.
Basically in any case where visual hyperbole is called for.

>> No.4155664

Back on the topic of the thread, OP accidentally a great marketing for this thread. The image was disturbing enough that it caused contention, and the trolls keep bumping it to popular consciousness.
Kind of like the advise to just outrage christians and they will advertise for you back in the 80s and 90s. And people doing that today with the current moralistic busybodies - the SJWs.
Perhaps this implies a kind of outrage marketing that doesn't rely on moralism at all, just autistic trolls.
