If you love classical landscape painting, you're probably fucked from the get-go, from a "fame" stand-point. But should you not do it? Should you sell out? I'd say no.
Even if you do exclusively original anime art, you'll have an easier time making money and earning fame than the landscape guy. This must be admitted.
Porn factually is easier from a purely economic standpoint, because we have a saying, sex sells, so there's no argument to even be had here. You can actually quantify how much easier it is in terms of dollars and time. This is not debatable. Is it easier on your integrity though? Of course you can do something as simple as an over exagerated sexual version of a famous character, but you can also play with the complexity of the sexual spectrum. Sex plays a big part in your subconscious, and although you may not realise it, it's extremely complex and tangled with other parts of your inner self, as your experiences, your past loves, your family, what makes you confortable, etc. It's not just a "this turns me on" kind of thing, lewdness can transmit a number of different emotions and messages with it, depending on the context, and can play a part in a true masterpiece, hence it being very present in art throughout history. One may even say it is one of the main reasons Art exists at all, if you look back to pre-historical times.

Good or bad, most people who make porn have little choice. Passion and interest drive your motivation to draw, whether you like it or not, and who isn't interested in sex? It's a natural area for artists to explore and says nothing about whether they're good artists or not. It's just a subject matter like any other and is totally separate from any specific technique or skill. If you have a healthy sex drive, of course that aspect of your personality will find its way into your work. I think what trips people up is that porn is much easier to 'fake'; artists who _only_ do porn tend to stagnate in their development and there's an absolute shitload of bad pornographic art out there, more so than any other type of art, leading to a conception that porn is itself a "lesser" type of art.

I still don't know why, but many of the most prolific and influential creatives are also the biggest perverts imaginable. It's inextricable.
