I am trying to be closer to the artist Tkmiz's style, I'd love some feedback on my attempt to draw one of his/hers character

Hmm, in all honesty just go theough Hampton’s once and you’ll be ok for anime anatomy unless its a more realistic approach then bridgman it is.
How many cubes have you been drawn? Did you get the feel for perspective? Did you use references of boxes so your perspective is on point to get the feeling faster? Did you also freehand rotate boxes? The artstyle you’re trying to replicate is nice and comfy but I’d reckon it would be better if you copy similar artstyles and try to develop your own along the way that takes all what you learned and interest to bare fruit.

I've drawn around 50 cubes (no where near the 250 goal just yet) and I feel like I have gotten a beginner's feel for perspective it's still predetermined points on a page rather than replicating perspectives of cubes in real life.

But thanks! I never knew about Hampton's anatomy book, I'll be sure to check it out once I'm done with the boxes and comfortable with line work and never thought about copying other similar artists as well to come up with my own style.

Keep up the work OP,
I remember the time I also did boxes but I went far and beyond and drawn close to 1000 boxes. Helped me with perspective immensely to the point I could do what krenz does for poses and everything else FZD style

Not so fast!

Mimicking a style is more than doing copies, you have to understand it from different angles.

Pic related is also by tkmiz. Way cleaner and tight.
He has some very loose ones, and also some that are lineless, so you gotta understand maybe even tkmiz himself has no single conscious style of his own, being the messy result partially a consequence of his time-saving workflow.

You should learn to mimic his style of anatomy/shapes first (if that's your goal).
Then you should learn his colors and shading style.
Then, after you think you're good enough, you can start getting messy and trying to achieve all this rushed MS Paint feeling to it. Otherwise it won't look natural: either it will be messy and bad or too stiff and looking like a "controlled mess".

>> No.4113842

>>4113822
I hope they're not all this crazy. The point of the exercise is to develop a natural intuition for perspective. Most of the boxes you draw should be done in a perspective setting that you're likely to use a lot. I also did a lot of mine in the same scene, so I'd get a feel for how to place them in relation to eachother.

Try to draw more boxes that look like something you'd see in real life (at least in shape).

What's wrong is how everyone seems to get enamored just because the artist who draws that shit is depressed and normies lap it all up. Boofuckinghoo a sad moeblob is being portrayed as a sexually confused girl who eats cunny and then kills herself, don't forget the edgy context that always hints at a suicide event that either just happened or is occurring and everyone is having a grand old jolly time jumping off a building SO DARK AND EDGY xD

This isn't fucking 2006 anymore with the emofad and the days of linkinpark, just have the artist kill themselves already instead of attention whoring.

All the fundamentals are there, you'd be the kind of retard criticizing impressionism when it wasn't established and being laughed at nowadays by anyone with an artistic sense.

Also you ignored anon's objective point of tkmiz mostly drawing safe and cute things, being all "sadness" only perceived.

1. You caught wiff of pussy and believe the Artist is female and a yurifag
2. You are only interested in the Artist and not the actual pieces in itself
3. You have a gross group mentality and follow the herd like sheep because you saw it on your social media feed with lots of upboats and asspats
4. You are buttstalking the artist because you're a sick fuck that likes to nose in on other people's business who are emotionally disturbed.

I'm willing to bet real money that this faggot would be a literally who if it wasn't for them pointing out that they're depressed, suicidal and bawwing their eyes out as an artistic expression in their work. You're working backwards. You've started from the assumption that the art is bad and the people who like it are wrong, and then afterwards explaining why they're wrong.
If you can't argue in good faith, then don't argue at all.

By the end of the day, tkmiz art is simply visually unique and atmospherically charming, while still being very fundamentally solid.

Holy shit what is with this board's obsession with fundies. You're not going to get tkmiz's style by grinding boxes and anatomy. Just study tkmiz's work, draw a lot (always necessary), and come up with creative ideas. Her stuff is appealing despite lowish fundamentals because she realizes the idea, the composition, and the aesthetics are more important than where precisely the gastrocnemius inserts. In short, she's just having fun.

Honestly, I thought your drawing WAS hers in the catalogue, so you might be on the right path. This style is pretty popular and widely imitated on Twitter, she isn't the only one doing it. I guarantee you not all of these guys have strong anatomy and perspective knowledge. They just know what they find appealing and they draw it in a loose way. They're doodling, having fun.

And I'm not saying to never study the more serious things, or that you should be satisfied with imitating tkmiz forever. But explore this fertile ground, and then figure out where you want to go once you've exhausted it. You don't have to follow everyone else's program, don't kill the creativity in you by drawing boxes, that's like anti-tkmiz.

I engage you on the same that you engage me. Since you're making an actual point now, I'll respond in kind.

I love Taiyo Matusmoto (that looks like fan art though? not sure whose, tkmiz's?). Ping Pong is one of my favorite anime. Lately I've been admiring the work of Robert Valley, who pushes perspective and proportions in extreme ways that might belie the skill that goes into the drawings. If you couldn't sense his grasp of fundamentals from that, his less stylized life drawings prove it.

I have great respect for cartoonists and stylists who create a totally original look, especially when they can make apparent amateurishness look good like Matsumoto. But I don't see very strong fundamentals in tkmiz's work. Just using your example, look at how off the perspective of the background near the top left/papers is for no real reason, to no purposeful effect. Is there any reason the papers aren't aligned? Could there be any reason the hands are (always) only barely indicated and rather malformed, except that tkmiz can't draw hands?

The thing this board often doesn't get is that, yes, you can make something look good without great fundamentals. I said tkmiz's fundamentals were lowish, not bad not great. I think that's a fair assessment based on their actual published body of work and not what I imagine they can do "if they really tried." tkmiz is a good cartoonist with good ideas and a good sense of composition and lowish fundamentals. That works for some artists.

Are you retarded you piece of shit? Fundamentals means exactly what you just said, not only anatomy

Keep grinding your boxes to infinity then, shitwit, see where it gets you. It amazes me I can essentially say: "be creative, because perspective and anatomy alone won't make good art--tkmiz understand this" and this is controversial on this board. Note I didn't say "never ever study fundamentals" or "tkmiz sux."
Creativity and aesthetics are most definitely not fundamentals, and if you believe simply drawing pages and pages of Loomis heads will eventually make you a good artist, you're hurting nobody but yourself. Stop treating drawing and art like fucking Runescape or some other lame shit where you grind it out early on and then you're done with that forever and it's all magic and fairy dust afterward. You're going to constantly refresh your fundamentals WHILE being creative if you want to make anything worthwhile, and any skill don't practice regularly will deteriorate. So you might as well start approaching in an open-ended, imaginative way now instead of believing once you hit a magical number of boxes, you've arrived and then you can start really drawing.
