I saw the Kienan Lafferty’s video about sketch lifting. I understand how to do it and I also know there are faster methods that give the same result but what I don’t understand is the reason why I should use this technique (and the multiply technique too). Im a /beg/ and i started Perspective Made Easy a few hours ago and am a bit confused as of how to approach the problems. Some of them tell me to go stand outside and draw the street (and even a highway??) etc. Is this figurative do i just have to imagine that and draw it. Why are there no instructions? Its the first task and i havent learned a thing yet?
When it tells me to sketch do i have to attempt hard and spend a long time or just use a few lines to get an idea of what its trying to show me? Ive had this book recommended so many times and its honestly a bit sad that it seems to start out so unclearly.
The second half tells me to use my blackboard? who the fuck has a blackboard at home?...

You clearly need to draw it from life. Don't know about a highway, but just stand in the middle of a road and draw it.

Why are you asking this? I don't know.

>When it tells me to sketch do i have to attempt hard and spend a long time or just use a few lines to get an idea of what its trying to show me?
Do it on a very small piece of paper, with a pen, with just simple lines and very simplified silhouettes for people.

>The second half tells me to use my blackboard?
I don't know, I didn't read this book. If you don't have a blackboard or a whiteboard, then use something else. I don't know what the book suggests this for, but whatever it is you can use digital instead.

Are there any art books that have exercises and techniques on color and light? I've read the most applicable chapters I can find in James Gurney's book and I'm working through Sam Nielson's Schoolism course right now. My problem is after the first few lessons he gets into transparency and painting all types of weird surfaces. Where I really just need a shit ton of guidance on the basics like how to paint different key lights, fill lights, reflected light, shadows, warm vs cool, and color composition. The exercises I've done where I paint a sphere, "sphere test" are helpful. I just need more shit on that level.

Because you haven't done it yet, you're just sperging online how you don't understand simple instructions.

I'll stop there. You're simply exhausting, mentally. You're losing your shit over simple beginner exercises. Nobody has the time or patience to hold your hand over simple things like this. Art probably isn't going to be for you, if you can't handle simple exercises like this.

I want to use this straight line pattern to emulate fabric in photoshop. I'm using the pattern as a smart object with overlay. When I transform warp the pattern to follow the form, it seems like it's using nearest neighbor resampling making it look aliased. I want smoother resampling. I notice you can choose something other than nearest neighbor when you transform a raster layer, but it doesn't give me that option with a smart object. It would be nice if I could keep it as a smart object just so I can adjust it later on if I need to. I tried blurring, but it looks bad. I was thinking maybe there was a way to do this when rasterizing the smart object, but I don't think it gives you that option anywhere.

So I'm doing figure drawing again after not having done any for a while. How important is it to get all the measurements precise?

Goal is to draw from imagination, so I'm not sure how useful it is to look for flat relationships, distances, angles, pos/neg space on the reference all the time.
So is it something like you have to do two different kinds of figure drawing, one where you check and measure everything to sharpen your senses of proportion, and another where you use a more gestural + structural approach to train your ability to construct the figure gradually? If so, how would you balance these two to get an effective learning experience?

That's good enough, but keep doing simple stuff like this from time to time on paper.

>Also is huion any good?
The screenless tablets are quite good for a beginner, I've tested the one in your pic (I think), and it feels more or less the same as my Intuos Pro, minus the touch controls and the eraser. The materials feel rather cheap, but that's fine for how little it costs in comparison.

I've tested the screen tablets too, and wouldn't recommend them unless you absolutely can't draw on a screenless tablet (and I mean after a weeks of practice, because it does take some time to get used to). They have noticeable parallax, and one of the tablets I tested didn't register light pressure at all. Maybe it's just a quality thing overall, and can happen in any random Huion, I don't know. I don't even know if the problem was with the tablet or the pen. Then again, they cost half as much as Wacoms, and generally aren't that bad. But still, don't buy a screen tablet as your first tablet, except maybe an ipad with the pencil.

I don't even have any account on social media yet but my subjects of drawings feel too scattered to attract consistent fanbase and later maybe set up some shop with merch. Having one style and theme would be more directed towards business. It would be a fun project but I'm also sexually suppressed and barely draw sexy stuff because of that(kek). I kind of want to break out of this chain and thrash my insecurity. Take the plunge: you get to practice and produce material that people will enjoy.

I rarely do fanart and every dumb sketch I make on the corner of a page becomes a new character in my mind, which makes me want to give them names, backstories, make an entire fully animated 2-cour anime just to develop them.

It's very tiresome, I don't have time to spare on so many characters, and no one but me gives a shit about them unless I put out 10000000 drawings of it and people start to get used to them.

Fanart will just let you focus on drawing and appeal, once the "itch" comes back and you feel like doing your characters, you'll already have made artistic gains and (hopefully) gathered a following.

I try to study real life and art and see colors as they truly are but whenever I start to work with a canvas I cannot pick the right colors or the right density, so I end up with wrong values and bad balance.
How should I study working with colors both in drawing and strengthening my eye for them?

If it's a matter of eyeballing, you can do some training the robot way, making those color picker challenges, trying to guess hues from pictures and checking the answer, master paintings, etc.

But if it's about achieving a good piece, try to make a color sketch very early on, so you're free to experiment with very little cost (making changes is as simple as scribbling a new blob with a brush).
You do have to have something in mind to do this, though. Otherwise, you'll have to use pre-made palettes or look at photographs/other paintings that have the same mood you want to go for. Take notes of color relationships and predominance.

Here's a sketch Vs. finished thing I did from imagination.

>> No.4106639

>>4106624
Gotta try some of those training methods. I do some color picking already but maybe I really need to start to shamelessly pick them apart.

Also yours looks really good. I also do the same thing where I lay down some colors in sketch but when I start to actually paint a piece the colors that I laid down, no longer work, so I end up tweaking and tweaking till the end of it. I don’t even really know myself what goes wrong. It’s like the colorless canvas just blinds me for the other colors so I don’t see them for what they are. I try to draw on gray canvas to help me with it but it still happens.

Contact the galleries/exhibits and ask, they're all different. An exhibition usually has a theme, so they'll have information to submit a portfolio. A galllery will have at least someone on staff who chooses the artists to display, or they lease space out, and it's up to them if they think your work will sell to their market. They're looking for commissions, so you have to fit them and their customers.
>And for trad. where can I sell the original?
Galleries, agents, or yourself. Or art fairs, or flea markets, or online. Saatchi is a good place for that.

Yes, it’s like a click in your head and you realize you can actually draw/paint it without ease. I gotten this feeling multiple times but tomorrow you’ll be looking back at your work and realize how shitty it is, it means your eyes have improved in terms of what looks good or what looks bad.

According to the laws, yes, you could be sued. A photo has a copyright, and if your painting is so close that an average person can tell it's from the photo, a judge would most likely find for the photographer.
You generally want to get permission from the photographer before trying to sell anything where it's clearly your source.
Mugshots, depends. Federal mugshots (owned by FBI and other Federal agencies) are public domain. State owned mugshots, not always - I would run anything using a non-Fed mugshot past a lawyer before trying to sell it.
If it's for your portfolio, most likely there won't be an issue. For commercial use...no guarantees, and I'd run it by a lawyer first. Or search out images, like on Flicker, that have creative commons licenses that allow their use. You can also use Google's image search tools to look for images that are allowed to be used, but I've had some pop up that weren't free to use.

How do I actually draw something?

I've been practicing everything i can, and been doing everything that gets commonly thrown around; simple shapes, perspective, drawing from life, etc. all the "fundamentals" you always hear about.

I've improved in those regards and can more accurately capture things I can see and emulate, but I haven't created any original content, I just don't know how to start. It feels like there's some hidden step between the fundamentals and drawing from imagination, it's driving me nuts

>> No.4108384

Style usually forms by itself, or it's intentional choices made by the artist. I knew early on the kind of work I wanted to do, so I focused on developing the skills to try the styles it would require, and by trial and error found the styles that I'm good at, and I think look good.
What are your goals, as an artist? Usually people that don't develop a style don't have a goal, or vision for their work, they focus all on technique, but never work on the expression they can do with the tools of technique.
And, it's not necessarily "bad", as illustrators often have to mimic styles that are trendy, or have a couple of different styles they can apply to a client's job. "Good" is relative - you can be technically proficient, but with no creativity or ideas it's just well drawn. Art is the tools and the ideas, it's a synthesis. A lot of focus here is on technique, which is understandable, but someone who gets to any level of proficiency, and hasn't developed a style yet, just needs to start forming an idea of what to do with that proficiency, or just be a pencil for hire and do whatever style the customer wants.
Make sense?

>> No.4108390

>>4108299
Original works starts with the idea. Imagination is a muscle, too, you need to work it out and grow it.

Start simple, like everything else. Come up with an idea, try to create a finished drawing for it. For instance, take your favorite book, and draw a scene from it. Or make an album cover. One exercise we had to do in illustration class was take a phrase, like "don't cry over spilt milk", and illustrate it.
It's common to feel overwhelmed. You can do anything, but there's so much choice you're letting anxiety take over. Pick something, make a drawing. Make it something you're into - a card game design, or a video game cover. Just something. The first one is the hardest.

>If someone DID become proficient without ever developing a style, what would that look like?
What do you mean by this? You can work as hard as you want capturing things as realistically as possible and you'd be okay, because if you can master life, you can apply that knowledge to literally anything you put your mind to. You're overthinking it. Just focus on getting good at drawing what you see. You'll naturally start to pick and choose what you like/dislike, and once you have a good visual memory developed from observational drawing, it'll become easier to draw from imagination and your own interpretations of certain shapes or patterns will develop. If you feel like you don't have a unique style that you're in love with, you just need to be patient and study until you find an approach and method that makes it seem effortless to render anything. So basically, DRAW YOU FUCKING FAGGOT. If you don't know what to draw, draw whatever is in front of you or even a picture from your phone. There are literally no excuses. Draw and draw until you're forced to be confident in your abilities. Then and only then will your style find you.

I am a beginner artist so this may be a pretty dumb question. Do artists that make stylized art like manga (the more realistic kind) usually base their characters off of real people? Take pic related for example, do you think the artist based this off of someone? Or is it possible to invent a character this detailed without any real life reference? Just something I've wondered about. Thanks.

watching his bbc painting programs they try to cut around his painting as much as possible, film it from weird angles, and just not include much. then it will jump back to his canvas and theres much more there than before, hell say finished, then turn to the camera to monologue about the topic of the episode.
its weird.

Depends on the artist. Your pic is not very detailed, has a standard pose and standard lighting, and a pretty generic face. Refs are usually used for lighting, clothing, complex poses and such. If the artist has a lot of experience painting faces then it'll be easier for them to just paint something like that from imagination.

You build a visual library from things you see, and your imagination utilizes your visual library to combine/alter things to make something new.

Same thing that applies to costumes applies to faces, artists often create faces from features they're familiar with, although as with most things references make them look more believable. Not references in the sense of drawing from the reference directly, but using the reference as an informant of realistic shapes and forms.

DBZ has pleasing muscular bodies but probably a little on the animu side as far as being technically correct.
For example look at goku's shoulders when fighting freeza in SSJ1 form, they're huge.
All popular shonen anime does this simply because big chunky muscles are more pleasing to look at, so pick one you enjoy watching/reading and try and copy characters and poses or make new ones (we really need more muscular saiyan women).

Have a concept. If you can't think of one, make a cover for your favorite book. Not every artist is an author. A lot of artists illustrate ideas of other people. The classical painters tried to illustrate concepts from philosophy, or historically important moments, or just myths. In what context?

Art is illusion. We're creating the illusion of reality, in 2D. Sometimes we need perspective to give a scene or object the visual cues for the observer to define it visually how we want or need them to. Other times, we can bend or break the rules to fit our narrative and intent. Does it need to be accurate to .0001 percent? Of course not. Do your objects and scenes need to be credible and in the ballpark for accurate perspective? Very often, yes. Can you use things like forced perspective? Yep.

TL;DR: pretty important, most of the time. Just learn it. You don't have to be a master at it, get the basics down.

Hey /ic/, I have been trying to remember the name of an old art app for a few days now.

It was pretty big on mobile devices back in like 2010ish or around that time. In the app you could draw and paint etc, but it also had a built in social media platform where you could share your works, view other peoples stuff, comment, follow etc.

I'm pretty sure the app is no longer on google play or the app store, but I remembered its existence recently and wanted to follow up and see what happened with it. Was kinda how I got into drawing and stuff.

The only other relevant info I can think of is the logo. It was something along the lines of a color wheel/rainbow spiral that converged into the point of a pencil. Other than this I am drawing blanks (no pun intended).

Thanks for any help.

My biggest issue is the woman in pink (or whatever color) that's in the foreground. I'm pretty sure she's not part of the story being told but she pulls so much focus.

Otherwise, yeah, there's 3 stories here. The crying hobo kid being ignored, whatever the fuck's happening on the bench, and the other crying kid who people care about because they don't look like a hobo.

Maybe the woman is part of the left-most kid's stpry, in that she's ignoring him but she's not properly composed. She's too disjointed spatially to be obviously part of that element.

I think the point the artist is trying to make is that we often ignore other people's plight just based on what they look like. And the man in the middle doesn't care because he's blind.

But honestly, it just looks like he kidnapped that girl and is smelling her hair. Pretty fucking weird way to make a point.

How can I improve my lineart skills? I can make pretty good lines in isolation, I mean I sometimes catch myself drawing from the wrist but the point is I can make good lines. the problem comes in when I actually have to start inking, following my final sketch.
My lines always seem dead, and in addition I constantly mash undo trying to perfectly go over that one beautiful curve I have in the sketch. I've tried a huge number of different brushes, small, large, opaque, sensitive to pen pressure etc. but it seems the problem lies with me. I seriously cannot make a picture that seems lively or appealing to me when I'm inking. Might be because I just trace my sketch but isn't the point of a sketch to serve as a base so you know where to put the lines?

I'm starting to think I'm just worrying too much about nothing. I mean I love other people's linework even when it has very obvious imperfections, but I can just never forgive myself when I make a mistake in my own.

I would like to twitch stream my drawings. I don't have anyone in my chat yet but I might eventually. The problem is that I don't like to talk much and tend to be very quiet. Do I have to talk to be successful with twitch?

Someone in class saw me drawing, and wants me to draw a picture of then and a celebrity.
I have no problem creating this drawing for them, as I think they are nice, I enjoy the process, and can use the practice.

At the same time, one could argue I'm doing shit for free that I really shouldn't, but then again it's like; I honestly don't mind, and I already draw celebrity portraits for practice from time to time.

It feels like such a non question but I need to ask— is it bad for me to do work like this for free if I literally do not mind?

Here's the most recent ones that I put a lot of effort into. By effort I mean I spent actual hours doing these, and it doesn't look like something someone put that much time into. It's stiff and the line weights are almost all the same.

Every other attempt up until this point has just been me meticulously going through the same process of going over my sketch, it's a complete chore.

So if I want to have multiple art accounts, NSFW and SFW, do commissions without them intermingling I have to create multiple business paypals?
Is their anyway for money to be sent to me by using one card that doesn't show my name? Because lets say i want to make 4 art accounts all with commissions

First work free if you like the request/person, but if they request multiple works, or bring friends to request stuff to you, you really should charge at least for your time.

yeah, this is what I was thinking. I'll do this one because I can, but if they asked for more I'd just be a working horse for them, ty for the input

Looks fine to me, don't let /ic/'s soul/soulless memes get into your head too much. Do you have any artist goals in terms of lineart? Doxy might be a good one to study if you want to improve more.
