IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

Thanks dude. Yeah, funnily enough the plan was actually to do some buildings next. Get that perspective and straight lines practice.

The idea was to do four pieces. 2 landscape orientation and 2 portrait. This is 1 landscape. I'm probably gonna do a cityscape next. And then an alley for one of the portrait. Not sure what to do for a "natural" piece in portrait composition though. Maybe like a lone tree of sorts.

Zachfag here, at the risk of sounding like I'm not learning anything, one of the many things I keep being told is that I need to stop chicken scratching, but I only ever do that when doing reference art. Sure you can do clean lines when roughing out a drawing, but as long as you're using chicken scratching for rough art only to draw final lines on top of, does it really matter? I probably sound like an idiot here, and I'm willing to have my mind changed on the matter, but as far as I know using chicken scratching for rough art is still viable as long as the actual final lines aren't chicken scratch right?

Well I'd like to improve upon it and make as good as I'd like it to be. It looks like shit now but I know where I'm going wrong now. Plus I really hate giving up on a work that has a good idea just because the execution is admittedly bad. Sure it's bad now, but that doesn't mean I should give up on it. Besides, it's better to rework something than abandoning it completely.

You might want to give yourself a little more time to do those. I started doing gestures yesterday and I felt like 1 minute wasn't enough for me yet, like I wasn't learning what this type of study is supposed to teach me, so I changed the poses to 2 minutes of duration each.

Reposting pic related from the draw thread. Posted there because I'm used to, but I think it belongs here. Number one is the only 1 min gesture I didn't delete. The rest is 2 min.

People say to do figure drawings quick but if you're stressing or rushing faster than you can think, it's not worth.

Slow down so you can take the time to learn how the body works, think about the skeleton and the joints and the proportions. Work from the inside out, from the gesture line of the figure to the skeleton and joints to the curves of the muscles.

symbol drawing is to an extent fine when you're doing cartoons, as long as you're in control of the symbols, but when you do poses, what I feel you're trying to capture is not symbology but reality.

Actually, these are pretty frickin good. Your proportions are almost there (inconsistencies here and there) and the shapes seem to have a sense of volume. You mainly need to pay attention to how the skeleton moves. Some arms are dislocated, ribs don't connect to hips right, etc.

You mainly need big improvements in anatomy and how form flows into one another.

Pretty sure that guy doesn't know what he's talking about considering he told you to get more into anatomy or detail for gesture, which is exactly what you're not supposed to do.
He might well be right as far as your figures in general are concerned, just not for helping you understand gesture.
In that regard >>4100355 is much more valueable.

It's common for people who first get into gesture to put down as much as possible in the limited time they have.
That seems to be what you are doing, better than most I might add, but it makes me question if you understand the core of what gesture is.
The emphasis of gesture is more on descriptive rather than depictive.

Flow / rythm is what you need, go study some Vilppu.
Or watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECpZcgR1bgY
Notice the long, sweeping, fluid, descriptive lines he put's down? that's gesture.
He then builds some detail on top of that, but following the initial trend.

>>4100367
Theres multiple ways to get there.
Since the line you're trying to mirror seems to be parrallel to the mirror you can just pull a parrallel line from "F" to the back until it intersects with the bottom line in the back, where the 2 lines intersect theres "A".
Or if you understand how he is getting "F" just do literally the same thing only in the back.

>> No.4100442

>>4100367
you can draw FA by following the perspective from F and find A by intersection with line from right bottom corner of original rect to lvp

or you can draw a vertical segment starting in right bottom point and mirror it like in non tilted version

>> No.4100447

Thanks, now I see what the other anon was getting at. So what I was doing was more like quick figure drawing instead of gesture drawing.

It's normal to find some directions easier than others. The arm 'wants' to curve when it moves horizontally and it takes effort to restrain that.
Your horizontal lines will get straighter with practice, but the best thing to do is just to rotate your page, so you're always drawing in a natural direction.

It was actually EA that I was having trouble with, not FA. As a band-aid for the situation, I just drew EA to be parallel with DF, then "capped" it when it crossed that horizontal line in the back. I never thought to do the extension trick to the back line, I suppose that would work too. Thanks for the help. I'm trying to learn the fundamentals before digging into drawing people.

>> No.4100456

>>4100410
If you're working digitally (or on a sketchbook), you technically only need to be able to draw a single straight line, because you can simply rotate the canvas/page. I find drawing straight lines from top to bottom to be the easiest. Like everything though, it just takes a lot of time.

>> No.4100459

>>4100455
>I just drew EA to be parallel with DF
it's ok and fast solution when convergence isn't extreme
and you can get DE in a same way as FA and then connect EA to get more precise result, but i guess you know it already

A beginner myself but what I usually do when drawing eyes is to draw the first eye's basic shape (The bigger one if drawn from a point of perspective) then draw two parallel lines to the horizontal construction line of the character's face as to provide a sort of measurement for the second eye. I think what's going on for you is that you may be adding too much detail to one eye before getting your proportions down.

Really? I'm mostly reading it because I want to read his book on shading and rendering, and you need to know a decent chunk of what he teaches in his first book.

Pricing is a difficult question Anon that we cannot really answer in the /beg/ thread. There are many variables in play based on how popular somebody is, who the target audience is and how good he is etc. I do not know your circumstances but personally if oyu are serious I would not go below 10€ in any circumstance no matter how shit you think you are. It is best to have a respectable bottom line you have and stick to it instead of offering wiggle room to go lower and only going higher from there. It is simpler for both parties. Believe it or not being the cheapest on the low end (but not free obviously) rarely does bring in more customers, unless you are really way above your peers. If only money is you goal instead of having fun with art then your productivity and popularity is way more important, simply because of the raw numbers of people that see your art will have some that are willing to pay more than the others for whatever reason, be it even just dumb luck.

Finally remember this well, commissions are not an assembly line of a products, comissions are a SERVICE, if you are hired they are paying for YOUR TIME, not to make one more of a pile of products. They are paying you to have access your skills, skills you have worked and improved for however long time (although since you are here on beg it might not be too long) and to use that skill for creating something customary for their specifications. The wider your skillset the larger the audience you can reach to, for instance if you can draw human face but say you can draw robot faces or alien creature faces too. For example knowing that clearly shows your wider skillset.

Again it misses the point that you are not selling an assembly line product, unless you literally do and just copy paste things and everything has the same face. I mean who am I to know what you do.

Make it 10€ as the start for generic human and after that it can go up based on how challenging the piece is it can be expanded upon wit ha great number of ways. For example adding detailed hairstyle, beards, complicated, clothes, jewelry, or making it based on real person or canon character. Or adding other features like tattoos, hats, cybernetics or outright being alien races. Or being flaming skull with a cigar for a song album cover.

Oh right, that is because some critics can't think obvjectively. You'll often find it is the shitters and the ngmis who call good art /beg/ tier. Not all criticism is good criticism.
Again, look at >>4099133. It is good, it is better than /beg/ tier, but it isn't perfect by any means. In some threads people would be saying 'leave', in others they'd just say 'it's shit lol'. At the end of the day, you should only listen to constructive criticism, not just single word memes. If you eventually get great, there will always be people who tell you you're shit. 1. Values are too weak, it feels flat because of it. Not onlt that but some of the shadows and highlights make no sense, suggesting no clear knowledge of where the light is coming from or how to put it down onto the paper. In partcular, the neck and horns are the worst for this.
2. Clearly no construction was used since the head is so flat, the cranium is tiny (there is no back of the skull) and misshapen. It doesn't flow into the neck very well, and the neck's placement on the shoulders makes no sense. The angle at which it is the face is looking doesn't correspond to the neck or head. The shoulders are just a mess
3. The lines are inconsistent in colour, smoothness and thickness.
4. Background is awful. Shit brown is a bold choice, but it doesn't work
5. Why are you signing this?
6. The wisps don't look natural. You should use more fading, or it just looks like a blob of cum, also they to are inconsistent in size and location
7. The general design is unappealing. Can't really say much here, but it just looks an amateur newgrounds thing. Obivously this is /beg/ so amateur is normal, but you should be using references and pictures to help your design, not just go with the first thing you think of. The scars in particular are just plain shit.

Questions:
Was this supposed to be realistic? If yes, there should'nt be outlines. Life doesn't have outlines, the values and colours should give you the shape, not the outlines.

Yeah I'd say the pose is a little off, that itself doesn't look too bad tho. I do think it seems a tad stiff and could be more round/bean-like. Also I agree, the legs seem a bit off too, at least in terms of the original pose. As they are by themselves, they don't seem too bad and they fit the form you got for the most part, however the feet seem a bit too puffy. I have no idea why but it reminds me of how a DIC show would do feet like that, just goofy and bloated cus it's wacky and appeals to the kids if that makes sense. Not to compare your work to that of corporate animation tho, but yeah they do seem a bit poofy. Not bad otherwise tho, just work on your forms and such. I also like how you did the hands too by the way.
