Have a friend who's an artist/writer, never stops working, never runs out of ideas. As he gets older he's producing even more work. Fucking depressing.

Isn't it an agreed upon rule of Discipline > Motivation. As you showed motivation is fleeting and only lets you work in hard short bursts. Discipline lets you work in moderate long bursts leading to more improvement

I've had a hard time finishing stuff lately too, OP.

I remember years ago I used to spend hours on photostudies until they looked good - I might go back to this. I know being a human photocopier isn't the goal, but I think the exercise is pretty good for building the discipline to get past the "this sucks" stage. Doing a photostudy gives you a clear goal and parameters, and it's usually easier to tell if it looks like shit or not next to the reference.
