TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

Reposting from old thread
Hi /beg/ I'm a beginner when it comes to digital and I have absolutely no idea how to color anything. I'm using sai by the way but have Photoshop too (If thats easier?) I tried coloring one of the arms on this character, but it was so tedious, and it doesnt even look good with this style. Do you guys know any tutorials for coloring on either software that would suit the drawing I'm doing. I know you guys are suited more to anatomy, but I hope you can help!

Also any criticisms on the drawing would be nice

I've been practicing my facial construction a little bit each day. I'm not really going for realistic, just trying to grasp the underlying anatomy and increase my consistency. So far I feel like I'm making progress. Getting the eye placement and size right in 3/4 view is probably what I'm worst at.

I’ve done some real life practices but I’m more interested in cartoons and animation so I’ve spent a lot of time looking at how artists draw and construct those faces. I mostly struggle with getting my eye height and distances correct, especially in 3/4 view due to the perspective. Would drawing larger help with that maybe? Most of my practice heads would fit in a 2” space.

Also, what do you mean by no skull? Are you talking about the backside of the head? I purposefully didn’t draw that part just in case I wanted to try drawing hair on it later.

Copying and horizontally flipping one eye to get the other is common practice for head on views . You see artists do it all the time. So why is it unreasonable to ask if there's a cheap way of doing the same for angled views?
I could see how it might be bad practice, but so is use of a number of tools that some artists frequently rely on then.

When drawing make sure you're just relaxed and having fun for the most part, be languid in your strokes, and it's good you're not scratching anymore.
Otherwise, I'd say it's a good start.
Though I'd recommend trying to do some very rough sketches of a real wolf, just get some rough idea down of a wolf, try it a bit realistic at first and or simplify the design until it's design is comfortably simple.

Also work on the head >>4062678 anon is right on the head part, and looking at furry artist to get this done isn't a bad start, just remember each has their own way of design, so it may look way different from what you want.

The usual it seems. Sorry for going full NGMI mode in advance.

I can't believe I have become a "it's my style" fag but I've gotta stick to it. Simplifying shit or warping the character designs beyond recognition for the sake of looking more surface level appealing is not something I'd like to do.

If you mean the huge head with basic human, proportions, the character is a shorty. The less heads fit into the body the shorter the figure. It's head to body ratio scaling. Of course that might be completely beside the point but I can't tell because you won't go into detail.
Nobody ever goes into detail of how my autistic style hinders my drawings, they just say it's shit and I can't tell if they just hate how I stylize eyes and noses or if there is an actual error in the relations and proportions of the face. I cannot take advice when nobody can properly critique my trash or are overly vague about it, won't risk letting myself be spoonfed shit by crabs.

Chicken scratching? You expect me to put that on the priority list when I have shitty anatomy and perspective to fix?
Also I do in fact do real life studies. I'm just not stupid enough to spam every piece of shit copy I make whose errors I can recognize myself.

Way too complicated? This works just fine for me, I am indeed so autistic I need that many perspective and construction to keep track of the form. These are not finished drawings, I can't keep polishing turds and make them look less noisy as long as they are structurally sound, or not, which won't hinder anons from pointing out construction mistakes.

I'd be worried about thar foreshortened arm, for example: the length is correct, but not for that angle. Like this, it looks like it's only reaching up to the top of her hip (if it were straight against the body), when it should be about thigh-length.

The head is a bit atrocious though: like that other guy, too much Loomis. Watch Steve Huston do the head, he does it a bit more naturally than Loomis/Proko (three hour video alert):

Are you practicing construction or drawing from reference here? Why are you worrying about construction stuff like head to height proportions when you have the figure right in front of you? I think you need to focus on just being able to accurately draw what you see first.

>reference drawing
just turn the picture black and white and up the contrast then turn it upside and use a grid, either digitally or after printing. Then use the same grid on your drawing sheet and focus on drawing what's in each grid

>construction
either digitally or on paper, place a second tracing sheet/layer over the original drawing and draw out all the perspective lines and construct the figure by hand. Constructing a fucked up figure isn't practice and won't make you better, you're just practicing the wrong things. By tracing, you force yourself to practice constructing what HAS to become a correctly constructed figure from scratch, which is better practice.

my only advice is don't get caught up on anatomy and construction. You use those when you DON'T have references. Work on being able to draw accurately from life or references first, then you use anatomy, construction, and perspective to be able to create your own scenes instead of needing to see them in a reference first. But if you can't accurately draw what you see then learning anatomy and construction won't help, because you won't be able to construct or draw anatomy accurately. Spending hours drawing loomis heads or whatever doesn't help if you don't know what a head looks like to begin with and how to draw one when it's sitting in front of you.

If you start with the harder stuff like anatomy and construction (anatomy in particular, and you don't need it anywhere near as much for how often it's recommended by /ic/) then you'll just get frustrated at your lack of progress and burn out.

Hey man. So, memes aside, here's my 2c.

inb4 pyw: >>4062463 I know I'm practically /beg/, but I think I've internalized the theory well.

Take a look at pic related. I suggest you start doing this when you get into this "wtf did I do wrong?" moments. Just overlay your image with the reference. The issues are obvious.

But I'm gonna try to explain how you got here. First of all, it seems like things get worse the lower you go. Try to work "from bigger to smaller" and "out to in". That way you're not tackling one bit at a time. You need to place your forms as you work. All the forms. Then go over it again. Then again. Each pass needs to add detail. You don't do eyes first, then nose, then mouth, etc.

Second, most work will look shit at the stage you left it. So I'm gonna ignore all that.

Finally, you need to understand that as the face moves away from the plane of the paper, things start getting foreshortened. What you have here is you divided the face in thirds like we're taught to do but didn't realize that, at this angle, the face isn't split in exact thirds. So even as you drew the jaw, you stayed true to the "ball on top, jaw on bottom" idea. But that's not what's happening here. The ball should be mostly BEHIND the jaw, not on top of it.

You drew the nose well (enough). But then you got to the mouth and you know the mouth is halfway between the nose and chin and you just threw it in there, without noticing that the jaw/chin location is WAY OFF from what's presented in the reference.

You need to take more measurements. Building from construction is not easy and until you have some experience you're gonna have a hard time. Always measure angles. For example, in this case, you could have taken a measure of the angle from the outside of her right eye to the chin and realized that it's much different than what you have. And then trust your eyes.

In short, you're symbol drawing. But I hate that meme so hopefully this sheds some light for you.

Good shit on the anatomy brah! I would point out that the shoulder needs to wrap behind the arm or else she would not be bale to lift her arm up. The collar bones seem to be straight on yours they are actually shaped like "bicycle handle" (to quote from Vilppu). Not sure about the face, with that flat nose she seem to have a bit of an alien or she might just have a deformity fro man accident. Ears are too small in both cases feel free to make them bigger and use them the ears as a rule of thumb are between the eyebrows and the bottom of the nose.

Overall pretty solid body tough, keep up the great work!!

To add, as you can see here, there's some very interesting lines you can use in this reference for measurement of alignment and angles, which you have either ignored or misused. You need to learn to trust your eyes and your measurements, instead of your head. That way, you can build enough intuition to draw from construction in the future.

You just need to keep practicing, but practice drawing what you're see.

Took me a while to understand this to be honest, but I'm glad I did (even though I know I'm not there yet).

You ever eaten something and thought "man this shit's too salty"? You should be allowed to tell that to a chef without being a chef yourself.

You're in denial. If you got someone pointing out your flaws you shouldn't be jumping to "this person doesn't know shit". Instead notice the flaws they're pointing out and work on fixing them.

Find a good reference photo and deconstruct the parts of it. In the picture the stacked logs make a distinct zig-zag seam. Also the base logs are sawed to make a flat bottom. If you include details like these your cabin will become more believable.
