Depends at what stage you are. When I was an absolute beginner I copied poses from Quickpose and it has a timer, so I just drew until the "lesson" ended. Actually even if you're not a complete /beg/ you can still benefit from it, take it as a warm up to go draw for 20 minutes there (1 minute per pose, doodle 20 poses).
That should warm you up and get you in the mood, then start an actual drawing of your own. Hopefully you got inspiration during the previous 20 minutes.
Once you know what to draw, well, you gotta do a small thumbnail. And finally decide that you won't stop until you flesh it out in a big drawing.

I dont give a shit about art but I was curious since I have artists in my family, whats the hardest to learn when you begin drawing: Anatomy, lighting, or perspective??? How would you rate the 3 in terms of difficulty to get good at?

>> No.4060633

>>4059887
Saturation is independent from warmth, grays will look cool next to warm colors, and warm next to cool ones. The warm lights - cool shadows, warm shadows - cool lights rule works most of the time, but not always. As for how the saturation works in shadows, observe it from life, there are many factors there.

>> No.4060637

>>4060588
Perspective is the very basic thing, you're supposed to learn it first. Lighting comes next, but you never really stop learning it, you just get better, experiment with lighting scenarios and such. Anatomy is hard, but again, there will be a point when you think that your knowledge is good enough, and it is, but then you will keep refining your knowledge, especially working knowledge to make your work faster and more effective.

So I'd say perspective, then basic lighting, then basic anatomy, then more advanced anatomy and then more advanced lighting. But it also can be different for different people.

I don't balance anything, I just stopped writing completely when I seriously got into drawing. Then after a year or so I opened the old stuff I had written and it was horrible, almost all of it was shit. Then I realized that I just somehow got better at writing in that year, that's why my old stuff seemed so bad now. I redacted or rewrote everything and it was so much better. I don't know if somehow some of my drawing skill translated into writing or it was just a matter of life experience. Some of the skills certainly don't translate, like when I need to describe a character's appearance it's so frustrating now that I can draw that I have to do it with words.

What is the best way to learn to draw faces which actually look like specific people, rather than just generic ones? I think I can do OK faces, but they just kind of come out how they do rather than really looking like the model I am referencing or the specific person I am trying to draw.

I'm on antidepressants for anxiety and depression, I've tried several different ones and I work with people with mental health issues and have some training on psychiatric medication.
In short, the effects of a given medication are unpredictable, so you basically just have to try them and see what happens.
Any SSRI or SNRI which is available as a generic prescription is usually a good place to start. The side effects are usually fairly manageable and in some cases even helpful (reduced sex drive has many advantages). If one doesn't work, try a bigger dose and then switch to another if it still isn't working (or you want to try and find one with fewer side effects). If you have tried a bunch, try adding mirtazapine on top of one. If that doesn't work, try a MAOI. If that doesn't work, consider a tricyclic; they generally have the worst side effects. As far as I know, none of the new drugs that have been invented this century work better than older ones, but if cost isn't an issue, you can try them too.
Most antidepressants are effective for treating chronic anxiety too.
Only tricyclics are likely to significantly increase akrasia / reduce motivation, but the problem may not be cured by antidepressants either. Unfortunately, the only really effective treatments for that are therapy to build good habits and stimulants like methamphetamine (which cause many more problems).

I have been drawing for a few years now, whenever I draw for fun, I don't have any issues, I draw whatever I want the way I want it, I can spot a problem and fix it without much troubles and the results are usually good.
But whenever I draw for something specific (a commission, a request, a friend's project, or even my own projects) I suddenly lose all of my abilities to draw, lines are wrong, proportions are wrong, and if I don't end up giving up, the result is terrible.
What the fuck is happening and how do I fix this? It's been eating me away lately.

>> No.4063269

You're looser when you just draw for fun, you don't have any expectations you place upon yourself, or any obligations so it's easier for you to relax and get in the zone. When you draw for other people, or for a specific purpose there's a bit of pressure. You can't just goof off and draw whatever you want, now you HAVE to make the drawing good and it tenses you up.
I think one thing that can help is giving yourself small assignments. They don't have to be anything highly technical, you could even take requests from randos if you wanted. Just give yourself lists of things to draw, and draw them. Get yourself used to committing to one subject to draw, and following through so you can break that mental block.

One method for images with flat color is to load it into inkscape, convert to vectors using the 'trace bitmap' function, then simplify the path. There will be some distortion, but so long as you start with something fairly high-res and with a very limited number of colors, it can look OK. Then just export the vector image back into a higher-resolution bitmap.

These are artefacts from the jpeg compression algorithm, Because jpeg is a lossy format for photography, it handles hard edges very badly. Most programs that can output jpegs also give you an option to adjust the "quality". 100% quality will give you a basically lossless file, but the filesize will be huge. In most cases 70-80% quality will be the best option, but it might still give you some visible artefatcs. PNG on the other hand can do hard edges very well, but will result in huge files if you have a painterly or photorealistic style, because the algorithm works best for flat colours.

So what you can do is try out different compression options, and see what works best for you. Most people won't notice these artefacts anyway, nobody will zoom 200% into your picture. Mabye also work bigger next time or do what >>4063490 said,

>What would be the equivalent of doing 2 min gesture drawings for learning color?
Thumbnail studies of colors would probably be your closest equivalent. Color speedpaints are also a good way to level up your color skills fast.
How you practice is also going to depend on what your goal is: realistic colors, or stylized colors. For realistic colors you obviously want to focus on studying photos and other works of realism, with focus on how lighting and shadows will work. I've found doing that photo studies and trying to accurately guess colors, and using the eye dropper to compare my guesses to the actual colors has been very helpful.
If you want to do stylized colors, you should focus on learning the principles of color theory (ie. know what complementary, split complementary, analogous, etc all are), and then start applying them to your own work. Experimentation is key, as well as looking at other artists and trying out their techniques/styles.
Studying how color works realistically and stylistically are complementary to one another, knowing realism better informs your color choices and knowing stabilization can make your colors more impactful than they would be in reality.

Just listened to a podcast that claimed 4 hours a day to be a maximum limit to new learning, in maximum of 90 minute increments. Not sure about the ideal pauses.

But then, art isn't like languages where learning is more technical, with art it all depends on how you spend the time and knowing how to learn effectively, instead of falling into a trap of just doing the same mistakes over and over. Quality over quantity. I'd recommend gestures and drawing from reference a lot to build up your visual library instead of drawing from imagination with no references, for instance.

But also? Drawing every day is crap if you have any mental health concerns, a non-art job etc. Having days off is definitely important even for the most healthy and balanced person. To become better at something you actually need to dedicate time to not doing it too, to get a well-rested, refreshed perspective on how to improve and to reflect on past mistakes.

Everyone has certain things about them that make them them. Some people are so unique you can tell it's them just by their contour/silUWUwet. You have to figure out the key points of there face that makes them look like them. But all this can be solved by actually drawing what you see. The more you draw actual people and what you see you'll improve. Same with backs. Just get a bunch of reference and draw. But loose. Feel the form and they and rotate it after you draw a few. How can we give you advice if you don't post your drawings?

>Does it need to be symmetrical ?
More or less.

>Does copy-pasting one side cheating ?
More or less. You can do it for production work, but you'll have to add some degree of asymmetry to it. Studies should be done without it.

As a general advice, work on both sides of the face simultaneously, if you draw something on the right eye, instantly do the same on the left. And, of course, try to make the initial sketch as precise as you can, and keep to it. Mirror the image horizontally from time to time.

>> No.4072111

>>4071752

On the topic of copy-pasting for symmetry:

It's valid.

Industry professionals for media production constantly use technology to speed up the process of fixing their work through non-traditional means. If you draw a rough gesture and use the lasso tool and transform tool to correct anatomy and reposition limbs and features, as opposed to erasing it and re-doing it until it's correct manually, what's the difference?

Time.

At the end of the day, the gesture or skeleton is going to be hidden, and if you can save minutes of fussing with seconds of technical manipulationon something that won't even be visible, do it!

Yeah you'll technically be getting more skill with a pen by drawing them out manually, but as long as you're copying your own work, and the final line art isn't copypasted (it always sticks out like a sore thumb), do whatever you need to do to complete the piece. You're better off learning by drawing 10 different heads than by restarting the same head 10 times trying to get it right once.

>> No.4072158

>>4071752
Depends. Most faces have a "dominant" side, and one eye will be higher than the other - not so much you notice, but it's there - and once you see it, like in an actor or actress on the screen, you can't unsee it.
Our bodies aren't mirror images. It's close, but you can have variances on very spot of the body.
In fact, getting eyes too perfect starts to get an uncanny valley effect. Don't worry about "perfect mirroring", and work on capturing a likeness, and producing a pleasing looking image.

I actually had to think about why I instinctively thought of shapes as chords, and I think I have a good answer now. I take back what I said, good shape design is not the only thing that makes good art good, but its the backbone behind good art. The same thing with chords. Good music has good chord progression serving as a backbone for the song and its what gives the feeling behind the song. I think shapes serve a similar purpose. This is all theoretical and armchair-esque thinking but I think its interesting nonetheless.
