So I've been working on a series of science fiction postcards that have a sort of Visit beautiful~ and i have an assistant that suggests and insists that far off alien worlds have tall blue clouds and dogs with antennae. And that we should have a recognizable image or template. Like a 50s retro but with our flare. Anyways the other day i finally broke down and told her that just because the dirty kike hippies want to make 50s aesthetic popular again doesn't mean we will do it and i slapped her face then and there. She recoiled shocked and speechless. I told her if she wants it to be the 50s then let's start by me whooping her ass into submission. She naturally tried to run but i pulled her hair and slammed her into the ground repeatedly yelling "Its SPUTNIK! It's SPUTNIK!" while forcing her to look at what i was pointing at, which was a small replica of the Orb of Tornami from my favorite show when i was a kid (Xaiolin Showdown). She cried and i slapped her a few times until she saif okay. I put a cigarette in her mouth and dabbed her bruised and bloody face with a wet cloth and told her "This" (yaling about the cigs) is my favorite 50s aesthetic. Anyways I'm wondering if there's any way to combine cyber punk with steam punk with a 50s retro aesthetic and make it look cool?

Sure.
In Shape dynamics, size control is set to pen pressure with a min of 10%
In Transfer both flow and opacity is set to pen pressure with a min of 0%

Also messed around with my Tablets pressure sensitivity making it a bit firmer.
Did that a lot before but it didn't really change much by itself, still felt like I was drawing with some sort of ink pen.
So while this isn't perfect it's a lot closer to what I'm used to with Trad medium.

Merging the layers was a stupid idea. In future, save the painting as a psd or sai or whatever to work on the layers, when posting on 4chan, resize the image by going into resolution to 1000 pixels or less and then save the image seperately as a png.

Bumping this with a slight self critique (aside from what I said about the shadow ofc): I feel like whenever I make a BG or landscape type of drawing, my brushes (especially for surfaces, and ESPECIALLY especially surfaces that are meant to be smooth) are really messy, and whenever I try to add texture to something (e.g. the dirt) it just seems too "paint-brushy" and not the right kind of "rough" or texture I'm trying to convey.

Left is the original but I felt it was washed out so I upped the saturation drastically. This could be a more efficient way of learning anatomy that just doing a bunch of sketches cause it forces me to think about the forms. You probably want to make the tail a bit more oval, maybe reducing its width by 1-2 pixels just to suggest that it's a cylinder in perspective. The wrapping lines near the center of the translucent tail "tube" are also slightly off and work against the form (they should be closer to each other).

well i've only tried it out a little bit so it's mostly first impressions, might be colored by the novelty of trying out something new.

but...
the first thing it does is ask you to make some lines with varying pressure and calibrates your pressure sensitivity based on that.
I feel like the brush strokes don't layer as harshly / messy, as they've always done for me in photoshop.
It responds well to the tilt of the pen, allowing you to use the side for softer and wider strokes, a bit like using the side of a pencil for shading (guess that depends on the tool you use)

Just download the trial, try out a bunch of tools and make up your own mind.

from a confirmed NGMI who's asked every question about drawing there is; the idea isn't to grind fundies, but to work on areas where you struggle
if you want to draw what you like that's fine, but look at what you did wrong and then work on that, just not obsessively
so basically: draw what you like > analyze mistakes > fundies > draw what you like again > analyze > more fundies

Oh dear, 4 hours? Its incredibly disproportionate. Theres one huge fatal reason why it looks awful, and thats because instead of constructing an anatomically correct body with normal proportions, youre just drawing a bunch of shapes together that you think are what body parts look like. Spend those 4 hours on actually structuring a body, look at guides on how to do it and use references.

You need to use construction like >>4052274 said instead of just drawing the entire thing as one. Look, I am still a beginner too and I am horrible, but I am going to try and help, so take my advice very lightly. Draw the waist as like a cylinder then attach the legs to it realistically. Draw the chest as a cylinder or box. Imagine how the character inhabits 3D space. Draw the parts of them in proportion to each other. Like one of the arms is just higher than the other in your picture and you also drew the skateboard as being straight on with the viewer even though he'd be holding it at an angle if his arm was leaving his body outwards towards the viewer. You need to draw the construction under the character and imagine them in 3D and shit. Start doing it now so it'll be easier later. Read a book.

Make sure there are internal marks in the contours that show the gesture. I had a tough time realizing the difference of contours and gesture at first too. Make the head draw the gesture of the spine, legs, and arms (pretty much a long axis of the cylinders). Try constructing at the same time as gesture too, after you make your lines for the spine flesh it out into whatever form you want to use

Keep practicing. Keep constructing. Go over any lessons you've read/watched. If you haven't seen Vilppu or Huston courses you're missing out.

If you check out Huston's Constructed Head Drawing (I think it's video course thread) there will be quick assignments where you draw from reference and various angles whatever face part you're working on. After you do that, watch him do it and try to replicate what he's doing while he's doing it. So that you can learn what you did wrong.

It's all a matter of practice.

And also don't be afraid to erase and redo your lines if something isn't matching quite right.

There's nothing anyone's gonna be able to say other than "practice more" and "watch/read more lessons". Not unless you pyw so we can tell you what exactly you did wrong.

You could also cleanup the drawing before posting on /beg/.

You need to pay more attention to the forms. I hate to use the "symbol drawing" meme but I think it applies the most here. For example, if you look closely...

Top Left: She doesn't have any pelvis. You pulled the groin area too high because you were trying to impose perspective where there isn't any.

Top Right: Her tits aren't that high up above the upside down U shape of her ribs. Her neck/shoulder area has also nothing to do with the reference.

Bottom: You flattened the gesture and then changed the angle of her head and moved it higher because your brain told you you should be able to see her chin. Her left arm isn't pushed as far back as it should be. And you killed the thickness of dat ass. All of these are because you didn't transcribe the gesture curve and twist correctly in the beginning and then it doesn't match what your eyes are seeing.

You still got a way to go, but keep practicing and keep deeply comparing and analysing what you did with what your reference shows. That's all that matters.

I'm not a big believer in tracing.

For gesture issues, after I've done my studies, I trace the reference then overlay it with my own drawing. Mistakes become glaringly obvious.

To avoid symbol drawing just pay more attention to the detail of the things you're drawing and match where the lines end and what the angles are not where you think the lines end and the angles are. It takes a while to break the habit and there's a few resources that walk you through breaking down things into abstract shapes instead of "eyes" and "ears" and so on. But more importantly, just keep practicing the forms and drawing what you see.

Hope you can read my shitty hand-writing.
>i've been trying to use gesture, anatomy and form, but it looks flat.
You need more time understanding gesture, the figure I picked as an example is the most expressive of the ones you tried, yet in your drawing it's the least expressive.
Gesture is a pretty abstract concept, which makes it difficult to learn. It's also not articulated very well most of the time, so listen to a bunch of people.
I used to do gestures for 1-2 hours every day and it still took me more than half a year until I felt like I properly understood it. So don't beat yourself up about it.

In regards to anatomy, if you're talking about painstakingly grinding the skeleton and muscle-groups then bin it for now.
Focus on Anatomical landmarks that have a large impact and are visible on the surface. Such as, how the breasts / pectoral hug the ribcage, the clavicles, the triangle of the sacrum, what the knees actually look like, the "wings" of the scapula, etc.

Really break down the forms (cylinders, spheres, boxes) I don't really see any of that.
Learn how forms overlap and how they move away/ towards the viewer (foreshortening)

>>4052911
Like the other anon said, pull your lines through even if they're hidden behind stuff. Otherwise it happens quite easily that something is disconnected and floats off into the ether.
Seems to me like you forgot a line to indicate the side of her torso, leaving you with that tiny looking ribcage.
Could use some form indicators / cross-contour lines.
Looks like you struggled with that right arm, it's okay to start with something simpler. like a long noodly line for the entire lenght of the arm, to get the flow right and then you can build on that for something more.
But that's mostly nitpicking, you're doing okay anon, keep it up.

Do this for like a week. Feel free to skip Step 1/4, but only if you can survive Steps 2-4.

Step 1/4: Make a line. Then make the same line with line weight however you think the line should be. Repeat over and over for different lines intersecting, overlapping, hiding behind, curved and straight.

Step 2/4: You find a picture someone made with good line weight. You recreate it by paying special attention to the line weight.

Step 3/4: For each line you drew ask yourself: why is it that he did the line weight this way?

Step 4/4: Try to recreate from memory the drawing you just made, paying special attention to the line weight. When you're done, compare the two. Don't worry about whether it looks the same... just make sure that the line weights are the same and that you understand WHY they're the way they should be and WHY you didn't do them that way from memory.

Sorry if it is hard to see because of my shitty lines.
From the picture I got the impression that we are looking upwards to hill slope, so the horizon line should be under below possibly even off the the picture frame under it. By that logic if you look at the little diagram I supplied you see that on the horizon line the circles are just flat but the more you move up and up the more they start to become larger and larger ellipses the further we look upwards or downwards. If you intended the eye level/horizon line to be on the house then it is my mistake.

>Also it's a tiny bit hard to see what you're trying to convey with the triangle thing I did on the far left; should its hole be thinner at the bottom and the top more "square" showing a little bit of the top surface?
I assumed that is like an upside down triangular shape formation (At least that was my guess that it is not a flat surface since this is a hill slope) but since it is even higher up we are seeing the underside of the to side of it. Which is not visible on yours but the two diagonal sides are clearly visible so logically the top side should be similar.

Hey, here is a bunch of heads that I drew as a sort of, "draw a ton of variations of heads" thing. What do you guys think? I feel like my best ones are the ones where I would use a Cylinder as a base, like in the bottom right and the one labelled "Cylinder 2" and "Similar Concept".

I would draw a cylinder first, then a line at two angles across it to sort of "seperate the planes". This is most noticeable in the bottom right one. Tell me what you guys think.

Thanks for the honest feedback. Of course I'm not doing an amazing job :) I'm still trying to a) get a likeness while b) apply the style and achieve a balance between detail and simplification. I'm at this point too. I don't think the cylinder actually adds much, since you only need to draw a circle and a jawline, so a cylinder is just wasting your own time, and will make the face look flat. The fact the majority of these look very flat suggests i'm right.
