IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the /draw/thread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, or you literally are never going to make it

thanks for the advice
I'm kind of doing something stupid where I'm pretending I'm using a pen in an effort to make myself be better at getting things first try
You'll see there's points where I couldnt help myself and erased anyway because it was so far off
Doing simpler poses from multiple angles will probably be more helpful.

I can't break things down into 3D shapes for shit, it's really annoying; I think it's partially down to Keys to Drawing never touching upon it, he just tells you to break things down via large 2D shapes, like a triangle or a square as opposed to a pyramid and a cube

is pure observation drawing inferior to breaking subjects down to basic 3D shapes?
also curious as to what the best resources are for learning how to do so

It's an inferior method of analysis if your art goal is to draw stuff from imagination (which is 99,999%'s of /ic/s goal)
I would recommend you do some introductory perspective ( i personally like Framed perspective though usually perspective made easy is what most people here recommend) and then go through dynamic sketching, either get the video lectures off the internet or follow the book's stuff. If you somehow can't find peter han's material then do drawabox, but don't get sucked into that community or you'll NGMI.

Alright now I used real desaturation.. though I also tried to follow the other anon's advice on things obscuring at the distance. Is it because of the clouds or fog? Or is it a perspective thing? If it's the clouds then I kinda solve it by having the characters poke through them (though this is a very improvised method...).
If it's a perspective thing... well let's take a stylistic choice because I want to fully show them. My original concept did have them far away and faded into the sky with an overlay layer, but they're kinda close here, you should be able to see their details.

Don't feel too bad about it. Just the right amount to move you forward. I too am stubborn most of the time, for example trying to draw motorcycles without even knowing how they look like but I refused to do research (and failed). I'd recommend watching Huston's figure drawing courses or Karl Gnass' Spirit of the Pose if you're worried about your figures looking too stiff. They know that gesture (how the figure flows together) is more important than simply getting the right shapes, and they teach how to construct the figure with that in mind. Both Huston and Vilppu say gesture is the most important part of all figure drawing.

Hampton's "method" most likely isn't the cause of the stiffness. Sounds like its due to your quality and understanding of gesture. There is no single method of "construction" that you should strictly adhere to anyway. If you are trying to remember a formula then you are doing it wrong unless you're learning the Reilly method. Even then you can modify it to meet your own liking like Nathan Fowkes.

Whats most important to learn from these constructive figure drawing books and courses is how to visually break complex forms like the human body down into simpler shapes in your head and on paper, and how build them up from there using construction lines and value to suggest realistic 3 dimensional shape and volume on your paper. You are learning how to draw complex forms in perspective ontop of just gaining knowledge of how to draw the figure.

Feel free to draw guide lines if you need to (i.e. the elbow is one and a half heads to the left of the spin and a quarter head up, so I will draw guide lines on those planes and put the elbow where they intersect).

Add the contours.

If you're on digital make liberal use of the transform tool to drag, rotate, and resize things that look right in the wrong place or whatever. It's not cheating and eventually you'll need to do it less.

You now have a guide for your actual drawing to go on top of.

So I should measure for stuff like a dot where the elbow should go, on top of my gesture or something? What about observing details?

>> No.4046132

You're doing good. If you want the adjustment to apply only where you want, you can create a filter mask and hide some areas by painting the mask with black.

>what mistakes I'm making?
I'd soften the edge of the light on the right wall, and harden the top edges of the wall, leaving some parts soft or lost for variety and visual interest. Like you kinda have on the top left edge, where a piece of a hard edge is seen betweenlost edges.

>> No.4046136

>>4046126
>So I should measure for stuff like a dot where the elbow should go
If you feel you need to. I usually try and freehand my stick figure and only go for the guide lines if I feel I'm not getting it right.

>on top of my gesture or something?
I wouldn't start with a gesture drawing. If you want to incorporate one, I'd do it on top of the rough contour sketch. If you're trying to reproduce the reference you don't need a gesture drawing because a correct reproduction will capture the dynamism of the reference. If you're just using the reference as a basis for your drawing then having the contour sketch of the reference first will make sure that your gesture conforms in broad strokes to the reference. That way any deviation you make from the reference for the purposes of exaggeration is intentional and calculated, and won't turn into a fuck up later on.

>observing details
Most of the details are part of the contour sketch. For example, if you're drawing a guy flexing his bicep then the shape of his bicep is integral to his arm, so when you're contouring his arm you contour out the bicep too to make sure it's in the right place. The shape of his pectorals affects how his shoulder is shaped, so you'd need to sketch them in as well. Basically, you include the details that are necessary to get the basic landmarks of the sketch down.

The point is that you want a sketch that precisely reproduces the reference. Then you can draw over the top of that sketch to make any changes you want or just to clean it up. As you get better you will combine the two steps.

you then proceed to draw 12 more low effort eyes

let me clarify: Stop drawing things in isolation unless you are studying those things in depth.

take your time and don't rush things
You should also take the value of the background into account, things appear brighter/darker depending on their surrounding values
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STLLy5miHDg
this video illustrates my point
I'm not sure how exactly you go about applying the values/rendering this
but I think having a value scale from 1 to 10, and deciding what the value of each plane is, is the best way to go about it.
also, on a more general note, what is the purpose of this study? Did you rush it while doing it? It seems very rushed, how long did it take you?
It is very important to take it slow while drawing, don't try to "get it over with". If you catch yourself rushing things, STOP don't try to finish it. Just stop, take a break, and either come back to it later or leave it. Better to have something good, but unfinished than finished, but bad.

dont worry about buying the best paints. oil paints are simple they are just pigment and linseed oil at its very basic so the only difference you will get between brands is the additives which extends/shortens drying time and negates the natural yellowing over years. things if you are a beginner you dont need to worry about, just buy affordable brands. they are already expensive as it is

you will need at the very least
brushes
linseed oil or liquin ( i use liquin )
turpenoid
paints, at the very minimum yellow ochre, ivory black, vermilion and titanium white. with those 4 colors you can mix a lot but not super bright colors.
gesso/matte acrylic medium
canvas/canvas board
easel. i made mine out of a pizza box. very cheap and easy.

Try laying down a center line for the entire lenght of the figure first and then judge your measurements based on that, to contain your figure.

I feel like I'm starting to get a better understanding of anatomy and how the body actually works, but I feel like I'm hitting a brick wall and without the added sense of form from lighting, I can't depict the forms adequately. Don't trace the outlines of whatever it is you meed to trace. Instead build the forms right in top of it in photoshop, or tracing paper. Then when you can understand the forms and their vabishing points from putting them on top of the image, draw it on a blank piece of paper. This should really only be used if you want to make the human figure out of boxes, and for real complicated mechanical stuff. Remember you always want to see through every form, so make sure if there's an antenna on both sides, but one isn't visible you still draw that antenna that isn't visible so you can be able to feel the entire form and draw it from memory later on.

I know this will sound shitposty or rude but why are so many people focused on construction and perspective when they can't draw from life or reference first? Learning to construct skulls, heads, faces, bodies, etc. in different perspectives should come after you can already draw them correctly first. Why not use a digital doll or a real desk-size one and place that in different positions and draw that first until you're comfortable and know what the objects look like?

the pussy should not be on the front of her body, it should be on the bottom. the foreshortening on the forearm on the left side looks off. the knees in general are just wrong (they look like bony protrusions) and the clavicles make no sense. The lines that show the edge of the neck are in reality the sternocleidomastoid muscles, which connect the mastoid process (bony lump behind your ear) to the sternum (ribcage keystone) around where the clavicles hinge.

From here I would really just study a fuck ton of anatomy. Proko's videos are pretty good for that. Start with the abdominal muscles and obliques, then the latissimus dorsi and serratus anterior, then the limbs. But before muscles, fix the bones (kneecaps and clavicles)

You don't need anything else when you're starting out, but I recommend buying a few pencils of different hardness just to practice line variation. The softer the pencil the wider range of line thickness (and value when shading) it has, but also the harder it is to control. I also recommend buying a cheap ballpoint pen (try it out in the store, see if it's smooth and also see that it doesn't leave random spots of ink).

However have another look at the legs, the one in front in particular.
Looks like you couldn't commit to something more faithful to the ref vs. modifying it, so you ended up with a mishmash that doesn't really work well.
Upper leg seems broken and the lower leg comes out at an angle that would be either impossible or extremely painfull.
On the other leg, the one that's behind, the only thing that bothers me is that the foot seems dislocated at the ankle and it's sliding a bit too far forward.

Then go through draw a box until lesson 3. Skip the texture exercise in lesson 2 tho.
After that you have find yourself which drawing method speaks to you. Loomis and Vilppu didn't work for me but I have great success with Huston. imo video lessons are easier to follow and understand so check out the video resource thread.

I'm a post some other of my art in a little bit.

Bought a 2B pencil, a 0.3 fineliner, an eraser, a sharpener (not in the picture), some "drawing paper" (couldn't find non-white anywhere) and a clipboard. Picked the cheapest non-absolute shit stuff I could and spent 9 USD total.

Someone with access to the sticky document, please put this sort of information on it. I was wondering about this yesterday.

Check the document in the sticky. There is a section about anatomy and gesture

Practice ellipses, drawabox.com has some good guides on that. Also Peter Han's lessons, but Keys to Drawing will address ellipses at a later point.

I think you just need to pay attention to the reference lines and to measure things against each other.

>tfw cant stop applying the soulless / soulful meme when comparing my art to others'
it's too fucking accurate, people who are technically "worse" than me manage to make drawings so much more appealing

Thank you for the critique anon, next time I will commit to the reference and halt any autistic urge to modify the model. With your advice in mind I'll post an update soon.

I'd say proportions and controlling line weight.
Also do another study and this time follow Proko senpai's mantra, K.i.S.S (Keep it Simple Stupid) and use only two values when doing a /beg/ value study.

Thanks for the input man, I honestly need to work on construction and proportions all around. Especially how musculature actually clings to the skeleton.

is it normal to not just plateau, but to recede a little in quality of work? i've been drawing every day but the past three days my work has taken a nose dive and i've gotta admit it's really getting to me.

i think that is normal with any skill you are trying to learn. taking a 2-3 day break might help.
