>Unsupportive parents and toxic environments
This hits extremely close to home. Not exactly with drawing, but with video games. I used to be very good at a particularly video game. Extremely good in fact.
It was League of Legends. 4-5 years ago I hovered between top 2-300 constantly in EUW but due to my dad's very negative view towards me playing video games all the day, I felt very demotivated and ashamed. So yeah, I stopped pursuing it even though my dream was to go pro one day. Having unsupportive parents and/or being in a toxic enviornment is soul crushing if you're passionate about something.

For art college they went with the "we only want you to get a degree" route. For me growing up and doing art as a hobby they just saw it as a hobby. I didn't get an art degree though, went into CS.
My parents where a bit to supportive at times though. When I was a teen my parents forced me to show them my sketches (not asked, but they literally refused to leave the room until I did). At that point I was really selfconcius over my art and I didn't want to show my parents, but they wanted me to. I showed them my art and I recall after that I almost considered quiting art.

Yeah, they've always been. I owe a lot to them, I wouldn't be where I am now without them supporting me through high school, art college, all the way until I started making money with my art.

These podcasts are amazing. Marshall always has valuable information. I also love Proko's eagerness to learn and overall "awkward" wholesomeness. They work really well together.

Parents are not supportive of me considering I recently got a degree in a career (that I hate) and now I want nothing to do with it. They already don't support me of my new career but they would hang me by my toes if they knew that I wanted to be a hentai artist

I love them.
They don't cover anything I don't know, but playing their podcast while I paint both gives me a genuine productivity boost and makes me enjoy the work and eager for the process so much more than my default work feels. The talks just feel really positive and comfortable man, and I appreciate their availability a bunch.

How are things going for you? I also figured out I wanted to do this stuff for a living when I was 25 and I'm 30 now. I finally got a semi-ok-ish paying freelance gig working on a silly children's game even though I usually do realistic work. Hoping to get some full-time, in-house work soon so I can really start focusing on this shit.

Why didn't you just do your degree to have some job security along with your illustration career? I always regret not having a second career so I end up doing really horrible jobs on the side just to keep myself afloat (working as a karaoke host / Gamestop whore / anything else that doesn't require my full, daily attention).

Anyways, if you're young and you're looking to pursue and you're not some "Rainman", just get good at something else so you have some financial security to keep your family happy! Learn how to be a chef or a bartender or whatever just so you can be sure you can support yourself while you're practicing.

>> No.4031835

>Kids who grow up in a healthy environment with mentors who encourage them to explore their identities and develop healthy emotional boundaries have a serious advantage over kids who grow up in an emotionally abusive / traumatic environment. The difference is basically like having an inner parent in your head constantly saying, "you can do it if you set your mind to it; it's ok to fail, just try it again" versus "you're worthless, you're a failure, you shouldn't even try, you aren't important so no one wants to see your doodles." It's called Complex Post-Traumatic Stress and it stays with you until you overcome it through emotional literacy and re-parenting yourself. CPTSD causes "emotional flashbacks" that cause you to dissociate (procrastinate / ADD / ADHD / and other wonderful self-destructive behaviors) when you get triggered by difficult and traumatic situations. E.G. playing video games instead of drawing, browsing Reddit instead of drawing, literally doing anything besides the thing you want to do the most ~ creating art. In the War of Art by Steven Pressfield, he calls this "Resistance" which is a more accessible and less psychoanalytical term for dissociation / procrastination. TL;DR: people don't often factor in the possibility that the reason you struggle with being productive might be due to invisible emotional neglect from a toxic childhood environment.

Same. I feel like they go off topic way too quickly, even in this one they didn't really explore or give great advice on dealing with an unsupportive family but I still really just enjoy hearing them ramble about random stuff. Marshall is a great foil to Proko and they make a surprisingly good team.

I wish all comments were separated by Male/Female/Trannies on this subject, since it's a completely different world of expectations, with men receiving more of the grownup kind of pressure and women having more le emotional meltdowns such as >>4031835 due to our different architectures, which bring different obstacles.

Toxic is also a word that is only ever used in this context by pathetic people, >>4031830 is correct.

I am the failure of the house and I get ignored when I talk, I get told to stay away when there are guests. and the rest of my extended family talks over me. They actively avoid looking at my drawings and they only express that I should get a real job.
I'll keep uselessly drawing for 2 likes a piece and avoid wageslaving at all costs until I get kicked or my mother dies, then I'll an hero. I tried wageslaving and I couldn't resist a week, so there's no alternative. I know I'm never going to make it but I don't have any other purpose in my life and I would be dead without art. I think the amount of disappointment and economic difficulties I'm giving to my family by existing is greater than the grief of suicide.
The only way I have to avoid this outcome is to become somebody in this field but there are 0% chances this will happen. I just think of myself like I'm terminally ill and living on borrowed time.

Fuck Marshall, he didn't elaborate much on the "supportive family" that becomes a problem.

My parents let me do whatever I want and think my drawings are above industry standard (they are "top beg" at best). But all this freedom comes with a complete lack of real interest in what I do, dad is always trying to push me into wageslaving at some soulless graphic design project that has little to do with drawing and more with vectorizing logos and typesetting magazines.

They think there's a button somewhere I can press to shit out a Pixar movie, but I haven't done it because I don't want to.

At this point my immediate goal, along with gitting gud, is having an audience that gives a shit about the content of what I draw, cause otherwise I can derive no satisfaction from my art and find the motivation to improve.

I'm almost 30yo and MAD JELLY of 12yo deviantart girls gleefully trading OCs and giving them new clothes and magic closed species (TM) pets.
