What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

Reposting because dead thread. Doing this should be more common, like the LR art from Dokkan or Legends. Though it probably sets the bar too high in social media, followers would expect you to do this with every piece you upload if it becomes your gimmick. Yeah, I stopped trying to draw on work nights because its just unproductive, and since I am constantly falling asleep I wasn't enjoying the process very much. So I only do it on my days off now and my work days I only do some scanning and house keeping stuff.

>>4029493
Well, I don't know what your circumstance is, but I will say that I am a incredibly unfocused person, and I picked up too many hobbies and started too many projects, and was incredibly undisciplined both with what I work on and with my spare time. I will work on something for a few months and if something else catch my interest, I'll drop it and work on the other thing instead, when I was bored I will cycle to something else. So I rarely putout finish products for the past 15 years. I also don't advertise them, plan was to do that after I finish something, but since i never finishes anything, I don't promote them. promotion of your product is kind of a full time job by itself, but its something you gotta learn to do otherwise you are pissing into the wind, and I think it took me too long to do that. I have a lot short comings, and sometimes is not just about how well you draw...I think I draw ok but you gotta network and get yourself out there.

I do for fun, just nothing that requires my attention for hours. I wouldn't be able to stay awake that long anyway. A lot of times I just zoned out on youtube and lost track of time...

Another way I do it is to sleep first after finishing some house keeping , and wake up and draw in the few hours between getting out of bed and going to work, but that can be risky at on the end of a long day, so I don't know if I can recommend it.

I tried split my sleep where I sleep a few hours, wake up and draw, and go back to catch up to sleep, but almost always, I wasn't able to go back to sleep so I get stuck with that 4.5 hours of sleep. Its potentially dangerous because I have long driving commute.

I also try drinking a energy drink at the last 1/4 of my shift, but its effect can be unpredictable for some reason, sometimes It keep me just long enough so I can draw something for fun, but sometimes it keeps me awake for too long and I couldn't get enough sleep for the next shift.

Either way if i am going to stay up after work and draw, I'll probably draw something that's most fun to me, slender women with big boobs and robots.

>>4029678
I work 10 hours per day, night shift, my commute is an additional 1 hour 40 minute minimum. So I do prefer to sleep a full night/day(?) right up until an hour before I have to depart for work. Although I think my circumstances might be a bit extreme. If I work regular 8 hours and less of an commute then I might be able to manage it a little better. The upside is that I get 3 day weekends on most weeks.

His eyes don't have to be fully open but big and bright should be the general shape. The eyebrows you added shouldn't be there, but if you insist, they should at least not be as large as they are.
IMO you should just figure out a way to connect the fins to the eyes in a natural way. It doesn't look like a swampert or an amphibian the way it is.

His snout , jaw, and nose also don't look amphibian at all, they look like a cartoon dinosaur. In both your swampert and frog photo the nose and jaw don't jut out, the eyes are more forward, the lips are spread wide, the nose bridge is very subtle and indicated mostly with lighting, and there isn't as much movement freedom in the lips as you drew. Look at your source images more and take reference from them, don't just draw a generic non-mammal head.

I like how you drew the body, it looks soft, squishy, and like they belong in the water. You shouldn't have added the random "fur" on the arms, head, and legs. This ruins the softness and makes it look even less like an amphibian/swampert. Look at texture of amphibians and add detail in those places instead of what you did. The tail is coo tho l I like how it's paired with the pose.

I appreciate you taking the time to type this critique. However I'm going for a mix of a frog and turtle, which is why a lot of features read as reptilian. I was only referencing that frog for feet/toe placement.

I wasn't super sure on the little spikes either. This and the head is largely based on an alligator snapping turtle. I will take into account how the crest things meet his eyes. Thank you.

I think taking inspiration from a snapping turtle would be great for the "lips", beak tip, and how the jaw is able to open and what areas stay static.

You should take after amphibians for the nose bridge not make it bulbous so it can read more as swampert. His nose area is smooth with a subtle bump and leading into a beak tip (so like a frog/snapping turtle so good job).

I don't think the head reads as snapping turtle/frog it reads as furry dragon.

Also, look at the eyes of turtles, frogs, and swampert. None behave close to what you drew. I know the eye style (strong downward turned brow on almond eyes) is aesthetically pleasing when put onto any aggressive or strong animal, but the piece would be much, much better with eyes more fitting.

You can also achieve the streamline eye look while still making the eyes rounded, large, and bright like swampert. Just make the actual eyes defined as such and make the skin around the eyes fold in a way to make a streamline eyeliner effect that works with the eye shape.

It is hard to describe but does that make sense?

You could render over cel shading. The point of laying down flats first is that you get a full understanding of all the colors in the painting from the start. This helps you make sure the color scheme works from early on so you don't regret the colors of an area you've already spent hours painting when you see it in relation to the full piece. Plus, it helps you keep lighting consistent because you don't get tunnel vision while rendering.

Take this all with a grain of salt because it's done according to my own aesthetic sensibilities, but I think you need to work on your facial/head anatomy.
The nose/chin area seems very long, while the forehead area is small. This creates a less "cute" and attractive effect. Additionally the jaw protrudes a lot, which adds to the strangeness of the face, These features aren't impossible, but assuming you're going for a pretty/cute anime-esque look, you may want to give her a smaller, daintier chin area. I'd recommend trying to deconstruct the way your favorite artists draw heads so you can see how they put together an attractive, appealing face.

Hm, I don't know if you are implying I learned it wrong or just asking how I learned it. Although both this and previous post's example is basically one point perspective. The guidelines are curved by leveraging the arc of my elbow. The details in distant backgrounds are more fudged, in general depending on the shape of an object it might not have a single vanishing point so what you need to follow is the horizontal line or the eye level. I tend to tweak those detail until it "looks right", but you kind of need to know a little how it works. For more detail and technical approach I do recommend Perspective for comic book artist by David Chelsea, which is a good reference book in my opinion.

Why is it so easy to tell when anime-style art is drawn by a westerner?

>> No.4034725

Japanese people want to be carbon copies of their inspirations. Western people are too individualistic and want to apply some personal touch to everything. That "touch" is usually enough to tell western anime artists apart from japs.

>> No.4034736

>>4034719
I notice similar characteristic westerners have. Such as, thicker lineart, not weight control, stiffer bodies, lack of exaggeration or proportion control, when it comes to the shading it sometimes too hard or too soft. They usually don't go full anime and instead have this realism/anime hybrid style. Sure there are some nips that have the same mistakes, but in general that's most westerners.

Where can I start. Some things you can get away with by arguing style choices, but with too many flaws, the drawing will fall apart. Let's start with the head. Like other anons stated, the head is too big, especially the cheeks and jaw. Your slopes are suggesting that her face appears really swollen. Also the face isn't constrained, so it looks like you enlarged the face making the hairline/forehead inconsistent. Cramming the eyebrow and right eye on the edge without giving them enough dimensions make the eyes appear asymmetrical, but you're on the right track. Look at references of people at a quarter turn more. Ears are also big and not aligned right but you can get away with that.

The body I can tell you struggled with. A head is used to measure the general ratio of your character. Her chest is nearly non existent and her shoulders are way too shallow. They're nearly the width and height of the head dude. The hand that appears couldn't physically bend that way, especially at the angle you've put the arm. By hiding the other hand under, especially for gripping a bat, it immediately comes of as lack of confidence which is bad. That being said, the hand is drawn rather well. Your bat is also not in perspective and isn't straight.

You really need to work on drawing in perspective and imagining in 3D, on top of more anatomy study. Think of your eyes like a camera and what is above/below your line of vision. And please work on planning out your pieces ahead more.

>> No.4037433

>>4034934
There are definite inconsistencies with the angle of the face and the direction of lines, and it nearly comes off as uncanny or at least like she's disturbed in a way. The rendering and color scheme are great though.

>>4035422
buy some screentones, scan them, use them

>>4037226
>>4037226
Clothes are very stiff, think of where clothes make contact or rest on parts of the body, it doesn't even have to be overkill just not as many straight lines. The second attempt is much better.

that arm is glaringly wrong. the longer i stare the worse this gets. you see that line at the top of the arm? its implying that the arm is in front of the body. but since this is a shot from behind, the trap muscles would cover the shoulder. and that little divot line you put below her neck? thats completely made up. it actually looks like the pit of the neck, which is on her *front*, making this that much more confusing.

that head being turned that far around is also annoying. for her to be looking that far back, her torso would be twisting, which it isnt, so thats also creating bad perspective. speaking of the head, the part farthest away from us is completely round, implying no eye socket or anything. and if we compare both eyes with the perspective of the nose it makes no sense, but ill let it slide because maybe youre trying to abstract/"cartoon" those details.

and down to details that arent about drawing:
your values are all over the place, i cant tell you how to compose an image but fill a layer over it with black and set it to "color" mode to see how your values work, they are just whack (id focus my values to create contrast around the face)

your line color is bizarre, your lines themselves are lazy, and same with the coloring. look at the spikes on the tail (bleeding that much color?) or those beads in her hair (you CAN draw this, you just gave up). drop the sparkle effect brushes and the huge soft """aesthetic""" gradients and learn how to draw mang, then come back to this goofy aesthetic and do whatever you want without covering is up via effects and deviantart/pinterest tutorials.
