Most people who make it after 2-4 years in ateliers usually already have experience drawing for fun when they were children or teenagers. Volen basicly started from scratch as an adult and is teaching himself so obviously progress is nowhere as fast as him going to an atelier. Honestly, this gives me hope.

Knowing that I can improve in faster time with far less resources than this guy just makes me feel so much better.

Some Dynamic Drawing/DrawABox/Constructive Drawing, anatomy (Hampton and others), lighting/color (Izzy Medrano), and some observational drawing (depending on how far you want to take it) and boom. You're pretty good to go.

Spending as much time as he has just to churn out a bunch of photobashing is a little upsetting. But he's doing alright. And he's enjoying it, so good for him.

But again. It feels so good to know how much faster you can improve in something when you have the right resources.

Loomis is good, but he's confusing, and he doesn't lay it all out in a big picture view like volen does. It's like if you already know the concept, then you can understand and appreciate what he is doing, but if you don't then you're fucked.

Yeah call me thickheaded, but sometimes you need someone to spell out the insight for you, and then you can go back and study and actually get something out of it.

For example construction. I don't think Loomis ever even says that word. You're just supposed to intuit that you're actually visualizing a sphere in 3d space, stretching a face over the sphere like a rubber mask, looking at it from a viewpoint, and transfering it to the page... How much time I wasted drawing a circle with a cross on it before I saw someone explaining what construction actually is.

Those resources may be good for someone starting from square 1, but I'm not at square 1, I'm like at square -5. I need someone to help me build a base so that I can actually understand what these books are talking about.

If volen's that guy then I'll pay the $60. And if it doesn't work, he says you can email him for a refund, so fuck it, no risk.

They're not bad, they're just not great.

But on the other hand, many people who are good at art are so shit at explaining things, that they are ngmi as teachers. It makes intuitive sense to try to learn art from a good artist, but many of these top level guys have some kind of brain thing where they cannot articulate their knowledge in a way that someone else can understand it.

I don't know if it's just that they are no longer a beginner so they forget things that are "obvious" to them are not obvious to someone else. Or maybe they are operating at such an "intuitive" level that they can't actually analyze what they are doing and verbalize it in a sensical way.

Volen, though, I think he can express himself in a way I can understand. I feel like I've gained a better understanding of what "drawing fundamentals" actually are from his free videos than I have from videos from better artists whose work I admire.

Maybe he doesn't have as much knowledge to teach as other artists do, but he does a damn better job teaching what he knows than they do.

And I know that he repeats himself, but you know what I'm not a super genius and I don't understand what he means the first time. Having him rephrase the concept and express it in several ways helps me to understand the concept better than some offhand, or one sentence in a book that you don't understand actually being super important and critical to the whole thing (this was also a *big* problem I had with instructors at college too)

It's not dumb to not understand a concept when explained 1 time, and hell even if I am the dumbest monkey man on earth, I don't care because I still want to learn it and I'll do whatever dumb guy thing I need to get it. I want to learn and if I have to have to jam it into my thick head with a volen shaped hammer 1000 times, I'll do it.
