I wanna paint like this, the character, bg, everything. but it looks so fucking difficult. my only comfort is that Feng Wei is in his 40's so i got a lot of time at least

how long would it take to reach this? do you think he relies on references or is he past that point?

Most definitely

No one is passed using references.

>No one is passed using references.
not true. i know a number of artists who have a visual library large enough to do more complicated pieces than this without reference.

>5+ years minimum
no one reaches this in 5 years. as if the above didn't make it obvious enough, you're too ignorant to be talking.

>> No.3959225

>>3959220
I said over 5 years my man, not under 5. Also the artists who work without references still study from references and if they're doing a complex piece then it makes very very little sense to use no references. Stop getting offended, why make the thread if you already have the answers?

>> No.3959234

>>3959201
There's nothing wrong with using references, but most real high tier artists dont need to go looking for reference cause they got it in their head.
Sae jin draws that kind of stuff on his stream he doens't ever use ref.

>>3959225
you said 5 as a starting point.

>the artists who work without references still study from references
yes, obviously. but studies are not the same thing as reference dependability. they study it to store the knowledge and bend it however they want when they start drawing

If you check the tuts on studio Element of Power on bilibili, you will realized that Feng Wei is extremely systematic in his method of painting, and he teaches all his students to go through the same process. I suggest at least going through their website http://www.yscg.cn/ and take a look through all their materials, they have ALOT to offer for free.

Now to answer your question:
Let's say you're an average artist, it often takes you 2-3 years to be hireable, 5 years to start making really nice work with good consistency throughout all your work, and 10 years to master and transform your work. An example of a 5-year is Astri Lohne. Examples of 10 years + masters are Feng Wei, Ruan Jia, HGJ... you name it.

About references, he 100% rely on references if you look into his painting videos on bilibili, however they often look for some very specific elements that they want to borrow into their paintings, never they use over 60-70% to the point where you can recognize they use references. That's why they often create a moodboard instead of just copying from 1 reference.

Pic is from 1 of Element of Power studio student homework. As long as you can follow the workflow, you can definitely channel Feng Wei into your work. But i highly suggest you to start working hard.

good luck anon

Believing you have more time is one of the cruelest lies you can tell yourself.

This is damaging advice. Everyone learns at a different pace and there are many capable artists in their teens capable of similar work that haven't had 5+ years to invest, rather point people in the right direction of what they need to learn instead of just vaguely inflating complexity.

>> No.3959376

Most people getting into this realm doesn't realize that you need at least 4-5 years to start not drawing like shit.
You won't find any instant gratification in this field
And that's the fucking start, not the end.

And setting an unreasonably difficult goal for other people, only for them to later not reach it and think that there's something wrong with them when in fact, they're doing reasonably well, isn't damaging?

OP asked for a realistic, level-headed approximation of how long it could take, "DO IT RIGHT NOW LMAO JUST BELIEVE IN YOURSELF BRO" isn't an answer either. The only thing I hate more than crabbing is tiring, pretentious fantasy-land self-help bullshit no one asked for.

He hasn't regressed what so ever. You guys are talking out of your ass. Go to his website. He has a huge amount of experience, and if you can't tell, his compositions, lighting and form is a lot better.
His older work seems "better" because of the amount of detail, texture and overall large compositional pieces.
His newer work is simplified and has a flat style. It is most likely personal art, without aiming for any special or potential studio/client. His older work seems catered towards commercial/promotional art

how does this guy find the right colors for the right everything? is it a math? Am I using color sliders wrong?

>> No.3960409

>>3960390
First of all his understanding of light and value are the definition of solid. When it comes to color he doesn't really veer away from the warm light/cool shadows, cool light/warm shadows concept. It informs his palette choices and everything else hinges on his knowledge of value and exaggerated edges/contrast. The keyword when it comes to deciding what color goes where is: temperature.
