TRY TO GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

REMEMBER, if you've just started out you work will not be good, it doesn't need to be, just get in to the swing of actually drawing, and learning how to study. Most of all, enjoy it.

How close am I to a human body without reference now?

>> No.3943044

>>3943035
Proportion wise not even close, you've got to understand how a figure is proportioned in relation to other parts of the body. A rule of thumb is to proportion the size of the head with the figure, for example the head counts for the height of a figure or how we're able to measure the distance from the brow to the bottom of the lip to find key landmarks such as the clavicle, sternum, bottom of the rib cage, the corner of the pelvis all which are used as bony landmarks to help you keep proportions in check.

This is why we suggest to study the skeletal system but you don't have to know each and every bone of the figure instead use the bony landmarks as reference and divide the figure using the rule of thirds.

Pay more attention to what's actually there, don't get lost in the meme from here of doing everything to a 20 decimal perfection level. Ballbark is good enough starting out. Good foundation so far. But you've made the classic beginner mistake when studying Loomis. The circle isn't supposed to represent the the entre head, Just the cranium (the round top of your head which holds your brain.) The centre line represents the eyebrows. The distance from that line to the bottom of your circle is the bottom of your nose. Double the distance between the eyebrow and the bottom of the nose and you'll have the distance of the chin. Hope that helps.

>> No.3943362

>>3943234
A little flat on the cranium, other than that it's good. Not very chicken scratch desu, just the hair. The construction is also solid cept for the flat head. Bowie has a much longer face with a bigger chin. A good practice is to check your measurements of features by comparing them. Distance between lips and chin, nose and lips, eyes and nose, eyes and lips, etc. Also check angle relationships.

What a promising anon ^ -^ ~
Keep it up. The arms are badly proportioned, for instance the one on the left and middle are too short. Always remember if you lift your arm straight up your elbow is right at the top of the head or a bit above, use that to get the length right. The right's lower arm is even larger than the upper, which is the wrong proportion and doubly wrong when it's going away from us, diminishing in size.

Is there an actual program that can help learn lighting, especially for things such as lightsabers? I was thinking of beginning to work on a project related to Star Wars, but I'm not sure where to even begin with the lighting of such things like that, let alone how to actually do shading and lighting properly when it comes to such things.

I've been working on backgrounds and trying to do things similar to a matte painting, but it's been rather rough so far, especially when it comes to water as well, but I think I'll focus on just the lighting of the main saber first so I actually understand it, because it seems to vary wildly between pieces, movies, shows, comics, etc.

Of course they do. A lot of them, like Alma Tedema, or Maxfield Parrish, would buy or build props, costumes, and even build sets for their paintings. Reference is not cheating, and painting everything from your imagination, while a lofty goal, isn't really rational, unless you're cartooning and generating so many scenes it's not practical.
Only drawing from imagination is a meme from here, from anons who had no formal art training, and think the ability of the small percentage of top anime artists and photoshoppers who simple portraits and figures are the only way to create. If you have the skill and experience to do it, great. If not, use reference, and join the ranks of the greatest artists in the world who posed people for their paintings, and used props and sketches and studies and real life as reference.

How do you guys personally translate to digital painting? I feel so lost when it comes to it.

>> No.3943451

>>3943449
There's no real step by step process, you just have to work it out. There's a ton of overlap, but digital is not oil or watercolor. You just have to keep at it. I painted for more years than I want to admit before I got into digital, and it took me a couple of months to really start getting confident, and developed a headspace where I could translate things.
Start simple. Learn how to control your brushes on the fly (I have the Photoshop controls burned into my brain and don't even think about it), and learn how to use opacity, pressure, and size to replicate what you'd do with a brush.

I used to have vague notions of doing different things like this. I think it's important to clarify your goals a bit so you know what you're in for.
Drawing/Painting -> illustration or concept art. Not much game design there I'm afraid. Instead you'll be spending your time drawing things for clients. Is that what you really want?
Start with the sticky if you're a complete complete beginner. Then move on to more advanced stuff. You're going into an entire course though and you'll be learning a profession, so keep that in mind. It's a long road as a /beg/ and there's much to learn. Post a drawing so we know where ya at.

I managed to put this together. It's meant to be a green/swamp like beach in the background. I know there are plenty of mistakes of course, but I'm having problems doing the lighting, I wanted to try a very simplistic (sort of anime approach to lighting), but clothes and folds are so bad, especially when I have no real reference or something similar to what I want to do, especially as there is likely two light sources within the pic.

Usually I'm embarrassed to post my art, especially since I'm trying to relearn and haven't drawn properly since I was about 13. Any help could be appreciated. I understand a northwest light will cast a southeast shadow, but there is more to light than just that and I'm still struggling on a lot of aspects when it comes to just drawing.

It's not done, but I figured I'd go ahead and post and get some feedback in regards to it.

I wouldn't particularly call that advice in any way. It's like telling everyone in the thread to just go practice and then come back in a couple years. It doesn't really do any one any good with any actually improvement because they're not understanding exactly what it is they have a particularly problem with or need help with other than just "gitgud". Especially when it comes to the lighting of an object that isn't actually real. But thanks anyway for the obvious advice I suppose.

You can't light an object without having a complete understanding of it's surface in 3d space, anything less than this will be a cope and a complete waste of time.

You need to install a 3d rendering engine in your head. From now on you only draw cubes, spheres, cones and planes, and your goal is to combine and blend these in a way that eventually matches reality.
Read/watch Vilpuu, Hampton, Peter Han's Dynamic Bible, Don't copy from photo's if you can avoid it. Consider drawing from life about 10x as productive as from a photo, until the 3d software is ingrained into your head.

Well thank you for the legit advice. I do that a lot actually, it's mostly just the lightsaber I'm confused on, I don't really know how that gives off light , I can understand the rest of the shading, just not how much that particular thing gives off light, everyone seems to do it differently and it doesn't help, even using a toy one is weird since there are different variants of light, some give off strong lights, some don't, I'm not sure what would be the correct way to go about it with that object. Would it be a light light, or a strong light?

But I'll keep practicing either way and work on it, thank you.

Complete beginner here. I was suggested to do gesture drawing & drawabox. Is it normal to not fucking understand gesture at all from the get go? Painting is about form and light and edges. The most basic way to explain it is that. Lights illuminate the form and the knowledge of the from tells you how dark/light the places should it be.

>What brush do I use for shading/painting these things?
Ultimately it on matters on what you are comfortable with but because ther are bot hard and soft edges it is recommended that you use a brush with pressure sensitivity you do not need to switch between hard and less hard brushes all the time.

I think I'll stop with this sessions for a while. I remember some anon said one should move on from an exercise when one feels one's gains hit a plateau, and it's been a week since I felt I understood something new.

I also just want to work through Huston faster and focus on drawing the figure less loosely, then if my drawings start to stiffen I could come back and really work on gesture/movement/action (right now my drawings feel somewhere inbetween gesture and figure).

I'm curious about how someone else would handle these poses. One thing I certainly learned is that not everyone draws gesture the same way. If you'd like to give it a try here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jy1rwangC3k

Breasts look a bit stiff, though, try to go for a teardrop shape. Highlights are closer to white than you are showing, I think. Keep it in mind, you can fix it later. I imagine this is harder than grayscale, not sure if the work from big shapes to small shapes thing still applies here. Still /beg/ so I know it's far from perfect but what stands out as glaringly wrong?

I'm not going for an exact 1 to 1 replication of the pose but I think the ref really helped me get the right idea for what I'm trying to do.

>>3944571
If I had to guess I would say get good and comfortable with construction and gesture and then I think pushing the stylisation of curved and blocky areas. The womans legs and the guys pants for example.

Obviously I'm /beg/ tho so I could be wrong. Definitely just making some guesses after analysing your pic.

Since Huston uses male torsos to show the sinking of the abdomen when lifting your arms and the V-shaped and related muscles I though of doing it with female torsos before moving on.

Kinda wished he had gone more in depth on gesture sources around the ribcage as he did with the face/head because I find it hard to locate muscles when they are not easily visible and think I messed up the wrapping lines on first drawing for that reason, but also it probably would have been too hard to follow.

Yes, you are just insecure because you feel that you have "missed something important all this time"while others didn't. Not the case, everyone always had and has these thoughts.

I know this is hard but if anything I can encourage you to try and channel the energy your sudden negative emotions are flooding you with to something constructive like (cliche I know) drawing. Try to draw something easy and mechanical that has no stakes attached. Attaching less significance to what you have missed what you can accomplish by doing something can help.

I was just reading this book about fetishes. They claim the futa /shemale attraction is based on an optical illusion. First of all gay dudes do not watch that kind of porn at all.

Second, they do eye tracking studies to see what men focus on. Universally across all cultures, straight men focus on firm breasts, round butts, wide hips small feet and big penises. Not that many dudes actually fixate on vaginas. But for one reason or another, maybe it's a competition thing, evolutionarily, this is what your subconscious is focusing on when you watch fap material. So if you can get it all in a single frame your brain will latch onto that as it's go-to.

Try to draw all those elements in a single picture, maybe you'll have to use a portal or split screen or a contortionist to do it, but it will gain attention.

That's if you want to fuck the futa or shemale. If you want to BE the futa or shemale, that also isn't gay. It's an extreme form of submissiveness combined with an idea of women that they are as shallow as their physical appearance and live for nothing other than the ecstacy of an orgasm that comes from being dominated and penitrated.

the head tilt direction is different. which is why his mouth is at a different angle. also check out the distance between his nose and the left side of his face. increasing or decreasing that space changes the angle he's turning his head. so the photo is turned more to the left, yours is facing more forward. i mean there is a lot to talk about but those are just 2 things that stand out immediately. i mean... just generally the facial features are very cartoony. i would recommend practicing noses eyes mouths and ears individually.

This is supposed to make the head look NOT flat. Your drawing would be right I guess if she was under the rain with her hair soaking wet.

Something like this should be done in that case. REmember, the objective is to make it look not flat. Don't stick the hair to the top of the head too much.
But yeah draw a lot and practice realism, you will improve your lines and general confidence drawing, I'm looking forward to it

Besides telling you to learn the fundamentals since you're at a very basic level.. the obvious answer is to not draw that small.
I mean, a black blob if ink ruined it, that wouldn't be very noticeable if you drew bigger.

What's with the drawing from imagination obsession I see posted about a lot? I'm admittedly still new, but I thought most of the great artists in history drew/painted/sculpted from some form of reference, be it pictures or life models.

>> No.3946741

>>3946663
Well we aren't like those artists, I'd say few people are. Painters and sculptors were too.. "artsy". Trying to evoke emotions and feelings or show off a certain painting technique to make people gasp. Nope not into that. I just want to be able to grab my pencil and produce whatever I want, wherever I am, and have fun drawing it. My drawing has 100 points and each reference used will take some points away, it feels like going on a bike with training wheels.

Also I personally believe people who practice mostly from imagination become simply better at drawing. You eventually develop shortcuts at certain textures and better shape manipulation to represent what you want. In the end this means you can do it faster and produce more drawings than people with 0 imagination since you're not limited to looking at a reference 100% of the time and can only take quick peeks to adjust the fine details.
Idk if that's convincing for you. There's the fun aspect, and the getting better at drawing thing too.

>> No.3946746

>>3946663
>>3946741
Of course you can also have fun using references and you still get better while relying on them. So it's preference. But I dislike copying, I think we're mostly over that in the artistic medium.

>> No.3946791

>>3946663
There's been many art movements in history and each one brought new things, starting from cavemen paintings to those medieval paintings of noblemen getting stabbed while not giving a fuck; and that was the best they could do at the time. Then realism was discovered and showing the beauty of nature was the hot thing. Then it became known that you can follow certain processes to map out 3d people with construction , with Loomis being famous for distributing said knowledge, and that's the point in history we're at right now, with realism (copying real life) being the most basic skill any artist worth their salt has so it's not as interesting as it once was, to artist themselves since normalfags still get impressed by it. Maybe the new trend in the future will be hologram shaping and construction and realism will be both basic skills no one cares much about on their own. Also I'd add it's human nature to want to do whatever you want, so imagination is the free man's choice.

In Huston's book you get some simple structure ideas for main body parts in front, back and side view (I assume he expects you to fill in the gap of drawing them in different perspectives), then you get some key points on drawings each body part, little bits of anatomy and more ideas for structures that more accuretly resemble body parts.

Right now I'm trying to speed through Huston's to start following Hampton, which although seems more daunting, it also feels more natural and in depth.

He proceeds to talk about landmarks, volume and simple skeletons to give a sense of weight to the figure. I'd assume that's the natural thing to do next.
