I'm going to post some artists I like with a short blurb of what I like about their art. You can join if you want. All genres welcome.

Sabrina Garassi
Italy / Contemporary
I like the colors she uses and the textures she gets are pretty great. Nice dreamy abstracted landscapes.

Zdzislaw Beksinski
Polish - 1950s-90s

The Polish cousin of H. R. Geiger (not literally) - his paintings are invariably creepy. I love his color palettes. He sounds like a pretty funny guy, he apparently refused to interpret his own work. He died in 2005 from a stabbing, but he was pretty cheerful in his day to day life from what I can tell. I wish I could get the sense of space he does in my work.

right? He manages to make a figure look as delicious as one of Thiebaud's dessert paintings, and not even in a sexy way (to me).

Andrew Wyeth
1930s-1990s american painter

you've probably heard of him. He's pretty famous but still one of my favorites. His colors are really sensitive and his paintings somehow convey a really dreamy, solitary feel. I had a chance to see some of his work in person and I highly recommend it. This painting in particular I remember because when I got up close there was just pieces of grass and dirt stuck to the paper. Apparently he would just go out into his neighbor's yard and paint their barn all the time. I wonder if he creeped them out.

This is a trend that I don't really like. it's basically portrait artists trying to make their craft interesting again. there is never any skill in the addition to the portrait, like the addition to the portrait in this case are just brushstrokes. other additions could be displacing features etc. am i right?

MC Escher. Not exactly obscure, but it seems like people only talk about his tessellations (which are interesting, desu).

I like the connections his work has with mathematics (such as in his hyberbolic geometry pieces, or when he inspired the Lionel Penrose to create the Penrose triangle), and how he demonstrates such mastery of perspective, to the extent that he breaks the rules in a very impressive, coordinated, way.

For example, this piece shows the same scene from the different perspectives, but manages to blend them seamless. Idk if it's online, but IIRC he basically used 3 interlocking curved perspective grids to create the print. Really a fascinating and non-obvious (at least to me) approach.

Very skilled at conveying a sense of dread through his work. Fun fact: before manga he was a dental assistant, which may be where his attention to detail comes from. His hatching is always so neat

Oh I remember this comic, it was quite beautiful. The artist is really good at establishing settings, conveying emotion and projecting emotions all with very simple almost abstract shapes and brilliant color palettes. You can almost always just get the mood of the scene by looking at the colors.
