These illustrations are from the same person for articles in The Guardian. They’re passable I guess but they’re super mediocre and look like a middle schooler drew them. What kind of bougie connections do you need to get a gig like that with these skills

Welcome to the art life: constantly seeing examples of shit commercial art and knowing you could do better but never being able to get those jobs because you are not the son/daughter of a ceo or wealthy investor that the company is trying to please by giving their hack kid work.

>never being able to get those jobs because you are not the son/daughter of a ceo.
Or maybe - just maybe - it's because you haven't bothered lifting a finger towards trying to get those jobs. Quit making shitty excuses for your lack self-promotion. How many editorial illustration jobs have you pitch yourself for? How many art directors have you reached out to? Do you have an editorial portfolio, featuring stylistically appropriate work and relevant subject matters?

If you think you're better than this and you're interested in working jobs like this, you can reach out to them and share your portfolio. Even for The Guardian - I found their art & creative directors in seconds on Google. It's not complicated. If your work & website is good and your initial email isn't awful, then you'll be kept in mind for future jobs.

A mediocre artist who knows how to actively promote themselves will be magnitudes more successful than a skilled artist who sits around all day doing nothing to land work.

I'm not salty about this guy working for the guardian but opportunity is a thing. I'm some dirt poor straight white male in the asshole of Europe and there's no fucking way I'll land a job like this in a million years, simply because I'm not some yuppie snowflake with a PoC pass and contacts from some expensive art college living in a major city.
I can market myself all I want, I'll only be able to get gigs when I'm skilled as fuck because I have nothing but my work to market. That's how it works.

Same way everyone else got a job there.

Through their friends and family. Nepotism is rampant at companies like this. It doesn't matter if you suck this bad if the hiring manager is your boyfriend or some shit.

>> No.3782846

>>3782390
Ask the art director there. They're the one who hired that artist - and seeing as it's the Guardian, other issues like race and gender probably count more than skill.
And, publications like the Guardian are losing money hand and fist to the internet, so they tend to hire cheaply. This artist probably didn't make much for the assignment, but it looks good on a portfolio to be published.

>> No.3782854

>>3782821
Most newspapers like the Guardian hire freelance, they rarely if ever have staff artists - and they're probably paying bottom tier fees.

The artist is Sophie Wolfson.

"My illustration work is influenced by my interests in medicine, social anthropology, politics and music. I like using art as a creative tool for engagement with a variety of subjects."

> influenced by my interests in medicine, social anthropology, politics

There's your answer. The art director probably has a list of hundreds of artists like her they can call every week to get cheap art for their stories.

Her portfolio is...poor. But she got it in front of an editor at the Guardian and Vice, and sold a couple of pieces.

Why haven't you? If you think you're better, submit a portfolio. Art directors don't have time to find you, you have to make yourself noticed.

That she's a girl probably didn't hurt, either.

Sounds to me like you're giving up before actually trying.

>> No.3782873

>>3782858
She doesn't work for the Guardian. She freelanced a couple of pieces to them.

It's hard to expect any of you to get anywhere, if you don't even understand how the job market works - staff art positions are rare in the publishing world, almost everything is freelance, and has been for decades.

You want to make throwaway graphics for a puff piece in The Guardian? Throw a portfolio at them.

No need to get pedantic. Freelancing for someone is working for them. If you don’t understand how words work and you need to be a picky autistic shit and split hairs over a few words that don’t really matter then like, don’t.

I literally got contacted for an editorial commission this morning from an art director I emailed 2 years ago ago told me exactly this. I've landed all my editorial gigs through direct email promotion, or from referrals by past clients.

If they have no intention of ever hiring you, they simply just won't reply to your email at all. The fact that an art director (who can receive tons of illustration promos daily) even bothers to tell you that they'll keep you in mind is a great success. It's a positive response, and makes it even easier to do periodic follow-up promos when the time comes.

But sure - whatever you say buddy. Guess I'm just grasping at straws.
