Thanks I appreciatw the honesty.

I used to draw a lot a couple of years ago. But since I started working and some things happened to me I stopped studying and drawing in general.

Most of my shit is either academic or unfinished, and I find it really hard to stay motivated enough to finish anything. I'm only asking because I've seen close friends and other people online sell sketches and whatnot, and ot to put them down or anything are worse than mine in my opinion.

Any tips or advice to stay motivated and to eventually start selling, ive never tried it before.

Thanks guys, in all the 30 years I've been drawing, I've barely ever done commissions for people, the last one I did, the guy didn't even fucking pay me properly..I have been slowly working on a comic idea for nearly 20 years now, but as my tastes change as I grow older, the comic gets redux'd and changed, and ideas and characters get rewritten and redesigned, in an endless loop.

Think I just need to bite the bullet and push out a web-comic chapter once every week or two...just don't want to end up like 90% of mangaka's, start off strong, then end up rushing an ending, and turning the comic into an incoherent mess.

Yes they can, you must be careful with this, lighter coloured copics nibs can eventually be stained with other darker colours, this coloured picture I am working on has used up an entire YG01 marker, and stuffed up the nibs on a few others, though I had practiced on a sheet of paper with layering colours and blending alot to try and get the effect I was after.

That picture started off with about 4 layers of earth skin tones, then I used YG01 over his skin tone, then I used darker greens for shadowing, then I used dark green coloured fine liner to do some more rendering, then after that fluorescent green gel pen to do the brightest highlights...quite a process.

What helped me the most with composition is the book (not very big) Framed Ink. It's amazingly helpful, don't get discouraged because it's a book and not a 10min YT vid and buy/pirate it as pdf. Contains great art as well as bonus.

That's dope. If we talking about commissions, i think minimum for this kind of work is couple of hundreds $, probably more.

Important thing to keep in mind - there is huge difference in audiences for different kind of work. For example skating pig girl with a dick above - and your work. Different people of different age, and positing in life will be interested in those 2 different styles. Your work is more serious, more like western comic pros kind of work.

I first drew rough linework with a H lead pencil, then went over the bolder lines with a 0.2 Mitsubishi Unipin fine liner, then did the bulk of the fine rendering with a 0.1 Mitsubishi Unipin fine liner, that has a worn down nib (I keep these for that super fine effect they give off), and in some of the darker spots used a 0.5.

I really rate those Mitsubishi pens over Sakura fine liners and others, the ink just gives off an almost printed look when done right.

Oh just adding to that, I also did some very light shading with the H lead pencil, just to highlight where I was going to do the ink shading. That also contributes to the gradient effect.

Quite a few hours, depends how in the zone I am, sometimes I can sit down and draw a pretty intensive piece in one sitting (but that's rare)..usually these days, about 3-8 hours over a few separate sittings, depends on the level of detail, pictures like that one I last posted have loads of details that take many hours to do, and multiple layers of ink, to achieve the desired gradient effect I'm after.

Funny you should mention HnK, as it was one of the biggest influences on my art as a child, along with Berserk, Guyver, and a few others.

Have you looked for inking commissions on DeviantArt? If you can reproduce capeshit inkers' work you can make a lot of money with collectors

It looks like you used pen/ink for blacks and pencils for shading so it still looks like a sketch.
Have you tried Grey markers? You can still keep things pretty simple but some consistency in the mediums might make it more cohesive and finished.
Besides that, get the notebloc app for taking pictures of paper drawings. World of difference. Pic related.

I'd guess that you're doing some art school since you're from SP, you can probably find a job in the publicity department for a magazine or something. If you plan on becoming a full blown illustrator I'd say you find an illustrator willing to tutor you or you just grind a lot, which you need. If you want to do commissions, study portraiture and you're half way there already. Your faces are weak and the expressions are shallow, although I'd see something like this going for 40USD after some fixes here and there.

I'm curious what you all think something like this would cost.

This was a commission I did between about December 20-28 to have installed in a location over the New Year. I was given free reign, except it had to match the paint on the wall which was a sort of toothpastey blue-green, and a seascape was preferred due to nearness to the ocean. The commissioner wanted to cover a space on the wall where there had been a whindow, but an extension had been added to the building and the window removed, leaving a part of the wall panelling with an indication where the window used to be. It is hung in a reasonably dark locasion, with the darkest part on the lefthand side.

Height unknown, but width of all three canvases added together was about 66 inches. I charged cost of materials used+$300 for my time and this was accepted.

Think about it this way.
If you look at a photo, pure white usually means an intensely bright highlight or lightsource. When you paint on pure white, youre putting all of your colors in competition with what is essentially a massive floodlamp behind them. This makes its difficult for you to see the contrast in your work and make good color decisions. Painting on a color that is midway between pure black and pure white, a mid tone, gives you a starting point and the contrast you paint will make more sense relative to the neutral mid-tone background.
You're trying to achieve this warmly lit character sitting on the brightest light you can find and its difficult to look at.

I’m usually pretty lazy about color selection, but I pick the darkest color within the lines and use that, or I just pick a random color within the appropriate color group (in this case, blue). Eyes and accessories are the exception, as I typically do those in black or they get lost in the body of the character. This isn’t always the case, so just play around with different lineart colors to see what fits best!

I honestly think anyone that's not drawing porn is very dependent on their fanbase. You could draw really fucking well and the chance of you making even 100~200 on a piece is low in general unless you're trying to find clientele or commissions outside typical art posting sites. If you have the following though that price can easily go over.

You charge around 35-40$ per hour to do artwork. You also charge for talking to the client and for gathering reference, for owning material and lisences. You add 30% extra for taxes and health insurance (if you live in america). Your dayrate is the minimum amount you need to live per month + 30% Divided by 30. Hourly is the sum divided by 8. I’ve told people in Scandinavia where I’m from that my hourly is 110$ and they didn’t bat an eye.
