So i despised anime in the past. Want to get into it now and probably learn from the masters. Any anime series you can recommend, not the gay romantic shit, but dark ones or something in space... pretty much like Akira.

There's only a handful anime worth watching, you'll get through them in a few days

Samurai Champloo is a decent series.
The good movies are few as well. Watch Ghost in the Shell, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, the Miyazaki movies, Perfect Blue, Memories, Paprika

Checked, thanks. No good scifi anime, something like star wars or star trek? Samurai Champloo looks interesting.

I started from a similar background, and I got to say:
There are really only 4 essential Anime series.
- Cowboy Bebop
- Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
- Space Dandy
- Jojo's Bizarre Adventure

If we're talking about movies, then check out all movies by Studio Ghibli, as well as Redline & Ghost In The Shell.
Avoid high-school jailbait bullshit
Hope this helps.

The beginning of Akira is awesome. With the social unrest and the biker gangs. But the rest is meh. Same deal with Jin Roh. The beginning is great and the German power armor looks awesome. But the rest is boring and stupid. Tried rewatching Ghost in the Shell. Got bored. Tried to start watching Cowboy Bebop. Got bored. I think it's one of those things were you had to get hooked on it when you were a kid.

What's with all the guys recently who hated anime but want in now? I used to be a weeb and DESU the classics that nonweebs like are okay but usually not as good as people make them out to be. Gurenn Lagann was a fun watch but not my taste. Though I'm a grill so stuff only focusing on soon or cowboys in space etc don't interest me as much.

Seconding serial experiments lain if you want some some dark/odd imagery.

cowboy bebop and trigun are both a blast. I also like gungrave if it counts as scifi

Most anime is near unwatchable because it's dumb as fuck or pseudo intellectual edgelordery. Just look at the popular movies from the 80s and early 90s for the pretty animation. You'll miss out on nothing if you skip the series

Gunbuster/Diebuster is good sci-fi mecha space shit

>not the gay romantic shit, but dark ones
christ, you sound like a child.
Something being dark doesn't mean it's good, it's like when children start trying to be "adult" and get into their retarded edgy phase.

Companies like Netflix, VRV and CrunchyRoll pushing anime in the west, as well as internet meme culture becoming partly intertwined with the online anime community.
This is largely 4chan's fault ironically.

Legends of the galatic hero if you're looking for a spacefaring anime that's considered god-tier. Watch the old series, it's long but great.

I think you would like these. Also the adaptations are worth checking out, if not, jumping straight into.

Battle Angel Alita (check out the the 1993 OVA)

Devilman (1987 'The Birth', 1990 'The Demon Bird' and 2000 'The Apocalypse of Devilman OVAs are the peak of Devilman adaptations).

Space Pirate Captain Harlock (I actually don't know too much about this series but seeing the criteria you set, it seems to fit the bill)

And Gunbuster, I'm putting this one at the end because it may be a bit harder for someone with your tastes to get into because of the nearly all-female cast and skimpy outfits.
However, it has played a big role in shaping up the sci-fi genre in anime and holds up really well with its timeless directing and writing, which has gone to inspire Hollywood directors.
