How the fuck does light work on horns and other bendy ass cylinders? I'm as /beg/ as it gets but I don't understand the pattern of highlights at all from the light source.

That subject is lit with at least two diffuse sources (one on either side). If you are looking for the single source, that might confuse you (and is one reason to draw from life rather than studio photographs when you are starting out).

Start by drawing a cylinder in a single source of light (ie a sheet of paper taped together at the ends, placed next to a window on a cloudy day). The horn is just an elongated cone, with a glossy surface texture that accentuates highlights. Drawing the simpler shape will help you understand light on the more complex shape.
