Thinking about getting a 4K monitor for mi desktop setup; is something with a certified 100% sRGB range enough for professional illustration and animation work, or should I spend more (basically twice as much) for a Photography-grade one covering up to 100% of the Adobe RGB color gamut?

This
Whats the point of investing in expensive equitment if you aren't even good? It wont make you any better.

Not OP, but I'm always paranoid that my eyes will end up getting adjusted to the wrong/distorted colors because of my poorly adjusted monitor. It kinda discourages me from taking color studies more seriously.
Maybe re-adjusting yourself once you get better monitors isn't so hard, but I dunno since I still can't afford a good one

Get yourself a callibrating device aswell, screens tend to change color overtime

Lol this is your ego protection systems going full throttle. That's one of the most elaborate excuses not to study and apply myself that I've heard in a while. I don't think it's physically possible to do what you suggest. It's not like you can be ruan jia on a shitty monitor and then turn into /beg/ when you suddenly get a fancy schmancy expensive one with a trillion colors. Even if the colors are off they're atleast going to be consistently wrong on a monitor, besides that value is way more fundamental and you should be able to see that on even the shittiest monitors.

A display's quality doesn't only affect color hues (which could indeed maintain a coherent relative relationship even if you work with poorly calibrated hardware) but also value range: working on a shit screen could really warp your ability to work tonally with subtlety.

It's kind of how the constant aftertaste of Ruan Jia's dick in your mouth might render you unable to appreciate your instant noodles for example

I wouldn't say sRGB isn't "enough", but it's a fact it's a narrower color range than the Adobe RGB space or the P3 color space that Apple stuff uses -slightly different gamut, focused on warmer colors than Adobe's which would win in the greens/blues department- Wide-gamut displays used to be more relevant for work done for print -as it covers the full gamut of the Coated FOGRA39 CMYK standard used in printing while sRGB and even P3 leave a good chunk of colder colors out- , but even if this is not your case and your work will be seen mostly on average consumer-grade screens, wide-gamut displays and HDR video standards are becoming more and more popular and they'll probably be pushed as a standard soon.

Anyway, there's no real answer: it matters, though it might not matter enough for the kind of work you do. Cintiq Pro's cover 87% of the Adobe RGB gamut according to the specs for example; it's not as if having a guaranteed 100% is a must to call yourself a pro

sRGB is fucking aful, that's literally office shit tier.

You want to have above 90% Adobe RGB. There are affordable 500$ 98% adobe RGB monitors such as
HP z27 and it's Benq equivalent with the same panel.

But 27" is actually too small for 4k.

I personally use a 32" AOC panel with 92% AdobeRGB and 3000:1 contrast (AMVA panel) that I got for 500$ and it is the best fucking thing ever,
It's purest joy to use.

I used to use a shitty TN monitor with off colors.
Guess what I was painting with off colors, those pictures look oversaturated and tinted when I see them on a decent monitor.

That AOC one sounds good, but the specs for the ones I find only show the sRGB coverage. Got a ref number for the model?

Here is what I am doing when I am done with new artwork and when I am not sure about colors or values; I often go and check the artwork on all devices I have (old monitor, phone, tv, microwave, etc)

stop being so autistic about *why* he wants one, and just say you don't fucking know of any.

or... are you telling me, anons, you have never EVER thought "oh ... is that shade of red I'm using there right, or wrong but because of my shitty monitor it appears right?"
who the fuck cares about his artwork. if someone goes in a car store saying he wants a fast car, the seller won't ask him why or to see his current car. stop being so autistic.

Ironically enough when I upgraded from a shitty tn 480 p to a decent ips display I started making my art too subtle and it was showing as too bland on ofher monitors. Mildly my fault as I had also started experimenting in a more dreary color palette, but even when I tried making the pictures with more contrast I still got some comments it was too hard to make out,

Sure, the rationale for using sRGB range monitors to work is that most consumer's screens will use that color space as well; but that doesn't mean working with a wider range of colors isn't an advantage on your side

But pay attention, there are variants with different panels. Mine is a UHD AMVA.
I am fucking happy to own it (the AMVA panel variant), easily the second best purchase of my life after an Onahole.

This shit is cheap because it dosn't have the Gaymhurr features such as RGB LED SYNCH and shit.
Also doesn't have 100% adobe RGB to charge 3000$ from the pros.

But the 8% of the missing color space are just the hyper intense greens (green laser in your eye kind of greens) the reds and blues it makes are up to AdobeRGB color space.

Also GREAT backlight uniformity and almost perfect black levels, better than you would never find on IPS.

VA panels supposedly have issues with dark areas during movement. Might not be a problem for painting in photoshop, but probably annoying for games and movies.
