Most creatives are technically freelancers. Writers, musicians, actors, and artists are mostly in business for themselves.

Maybe what you really mean to ask is "why is he doing grunt work instead of being employed as an in-house art director," to which my answer would be that design skills isn't the same as execution. Designers is what companies want in-house. Artists without a unique identity or skill are easily replaceable.

Freelancing isn't inherently bad, you get to work when you can and take on projects that are interesting to you for a much bigger rate than if you work for a company. It's just less secure.

For me the inclusion of the ghost dad feels really awkward. He doesn't have any appreciable effect on the figure/environment (no reflected light, no green-bluish haze, nothing), and he's partially out of frame in a way that isn't aesthetically pleasing. It feels like he was painted in at the last moment to a completed piece.

I don't get it.

The IATSE rate for a draftsman on a feature production is $37 an hour. The standard hours in film production, which you are often paid for whether you work the full day or not, means you make over $500 a day.

Why would anyone fuck around with freelancing bullshit when they can work in the film industry and work for the duration of a production?

The US government spends billions on food stamps and entitlements for people that work full time. There's essentially never been a time in American history when corporations paid less taxes. We went from when America was "great" and corporations paid over 70% taxes to now when they pay effectively zero. When we strip "entitlements" designed to help the poor and working class gain upward mobility we're destroying our future out of spite.
