I'm so glad this thread is here, I need some help with my dip pen and I need it now

>watch videos about inking with a dip pen
>people say that you should always pull the pen towards your hand, or else the line will get bumpy
>test it
>it it true, lines only come out clean when I pull the pen, even sidways motion make the line get all bumpy
>watch videos of professional inkers
>completely disregard of said rule, they just draw at whatever angle they feel like and the line comes out as clear as possible

How the fuck can I do that?

Hmmm, It looks like a bowl shaped pen, those seem to be difficult for me to do any line outside a pull line. Not impossible, mind you, but effort is required. I'd go for a crow quill iff you wanna be more free in how you throw your lines on the paper. So like a Hunt 102 (big two standard, low Quality control), a Gillott 303 (current nib I like, cheap), maru pens from deleter.

Holy fuck anons, thanks for the great advices, will look up those materials and try it out. Also, how is the learning curve for brushes compared with nibs? Is getting fine lines with a brush too hard? In your opinion someone who never inked before should invest his time with them first?

>> No.3610286

>>3610283
I'm a brush kind of guy so I might be biased, but I say go for brushes. It's not hard to get a good feel for them but the maintenance is a bitch and mastery is a whole other matter. It's also weird in that I'm not a fan of the usual manner of brushes being peddled about and I much prefer the Chinese brushes for inking. More responsive and I don't need to care if I care for them or not. I can buy a handful of replacements for not much cash.

>> No.3610287

>>3610283
nibs for fine lines, brushes for sketchy stuff or large areas of black. You can do fine lines with a brush just make sure it's small enough and the ink flow is right for the speed you draw at. It it's too dry and you draw fast it'll look like shit. Too wet and you draw slowly and it'll pool and look nasty.

>> No.3610314

>>3610157
>maru pens
>more free in how you throw your lines
But those are very stiff and are meant for hatching and stuff. Wouldn't they be the least 'free'?

>> No.3610315

>>3610283
Nibs are easy to pick up, but take considerations (smooth paper, keep away from water, make sure ink dosen't gum the nib holder) to make sure they last longer. Brushes are difficult to master, but when you do it's pretty much the only thing you need to ink with with less, more vital upkeep (don't let ink dry in the hair root, switch rinsing water if it get's too dirty) and can last much longer if you care for it. round sable brushes are what you want when you want to start dip brushing, but other anons have shown love for those pentel Aquash brushes and fill it with fountain ink.

>> No.3610323

>>3610314
Oh shit, you're right. I have no clue what nib I was testing, but I mixed it up with the maru. But yeah anon >>3610283, test the flexibility in your nibs, more flex is what you want to break out of the pull line only rut.

>> No.3610380

>>3610283
Try getting your hands on a G-nib if you want crazy control over your ink as not to leak all around when pressing it too much.
Experiment too. I used toothpicks to do detailing once. That turned out pretty cool.
My rule for filling out places is to place "X"'s on fields that are suppose to be inked, then use a marker and coat it up to the edge before either using a brush or the nib.

Recommending watching Jim Lee's streams. He's got some cool shit and shows off his techniques all for free.
