Posting some of the acrylic meme paintings I've been working on.

I'm doing a bit where I'm Racing Van Gogh. That uppity NEET hipster fuck made ~900 ok paintings in ~10 years then shot himself in the chest as a goof and now he has a wikipedia page and everything.

What I'm finna doing is MORE PAINTINGS in LESS TIME with MORE BULLETS probably. Don't think I'll do the ear meme but I am planning on cutting off half a finger around 750.

I'm currently on #260 at 2 years in. Part of the autism that I use to justify this shit is that none of the paintings are done until everything is done, so it's not necessarily about what they are now, but what they could be when they're found in a dumpster in 20 years.

Kind of coming out of the peasant painting part of the Van Gogh parallel thing. He spent the first 2 years doing portraits of poor people which was seen as an weird thing to do.

We're part of one of the largest, most insane waves of advancement in human advancement in history. It's an exciting time and the entire concepts of things like labor and capital are quickly evolving and I'm getting to sit back and reflect on it while making an uppity series of paintings.

Generally one or both of 2 reasons: they're part of a larger thematic concept that I'm esploring, or they're expressing their face muscles in a neat weigh.

Peasant paintings era was all about him painting peasants. Who don't have an interest in the arts and don't have money to commission paintings of themselves. It was an kind of unheard of thing for an an artist to do. He moved to the country and painted poor people. I can contrive a lot of parellels between what he was doing and painting shitty memes, celebrity goof faces, screenshots etc.

His peasant painting period ended with The Potato Eaters. I'm working towards doing a Chest Eaters. Then I'll have to move to Paris or something.

in terms of the painting there's nothing that sicks out given the sort of camp kitschy thing you're going for, maybe a bit more care when it comes to details, teeth, eyebrows, eyes to a certain degree, kinda lets them down. not a great sense of light in any of them either, not required though, just would be nice to see something technically interesting/pretty to make one take a second look.

yeah I would like to say for the record that I was knowingly using black to fuck up paintings after I would get frustrated throughout the first year. Like I fucked up hot dog harrison paintings early on >>3505251 and used black outlines on it and it turned out ok to me so I kept chasing that kind of look and it kept not working out and then I kept doing it out of spite.

I still kind of think it can be interesting to weirdly use black, but the whole year 2 thing has become about literally never using black paint, which definitely makes them considerably less overtly-retarded looking.

yeah I agree. I had kind of gotten into a pattern where I didn't paint teeth. Thought it gives them a novel and identifiable aesthetic. But problem is that for a lot of them that aesthetic is just "unfinished."

yeah I'm working on that I guess. Thinking I'm about to do a series of still lives of the garbage around my workspace that'll have dynamic lighting and everything.

Part of the problem for me is that actively not taking stuff that seriously and not necessarily being primarily concerned with making legitimately good looking or technically impressive work is great to keep you motivated forward without getting bogged down in procrastination and anxiety, but I'm definitely at the point where I have to start challenging myself more to stay interested.

Like pic related was done by hand without a grid which I'd never done before on this project, particularly not on a 24x20. The lighting is kind of fucked but I think it'll be nice when it's done.

The "suicide" is "hearsay" kind of. There's the theory that he was partying with some buddies, one of which was a kind of retarded guy that was obsessed with cowboys and walked around with a revolver. I buy into the theory that Van Gogh was accidentally shot, but didn't to fuck over his mate so he said he did it.

But the mutilation wasn't really "hearsay." He cut his ear off in the middle of a kind of manic episode after having a fight with Gauguin. We know this from his letters.

Actually I went to the van gogh museum on mushroom truffles in December 2016 and that's where I incepted myself into needing to race that dingus.

We both have similar educational backgrounds, we both have similar family and financial backgrounds, we both have similar types of bipolar-related mental illness, and a bunch of other shit. He spent most of his 20s working in an art-adjacent industry, and so did I. He bowed out of doing that at around 28, so did I. Bunch of parallels.

Actually yeah. He ate shit constantly for using elementary level transfer techniques onto canvas. He ate shit from contemporaries and his artist friends because he used a perspective frame for almost everything. He literally had a blacksmith make him a giant fucking window frame with wires on it that he would schlep out into the woods for his paintings.

He (I believe) literally never painted anything from imagination. He would draw thick guidelines on the canvas (which he then had to apply thick layers of paint to cover up), and generally "cheated" as much as he could by artfag standards when it came to transferring to canvas.

What's your preferred method? I'll do one that way.

Technically, he was absolutely a better artist. Yeah they're essentially all on canvas panels. Think there's like 8 that were done on 8x10 stretched canvas. idk I really like A: the compactibility and B: the lack of give in panels over stretchers.

I don't paint on an easel or anything, and I prefer to be able to rotate the surface as needed. I basically just keep my right arm and wrist in a fixed position and rotate the canvas so I'm brushing into my lines at all thymes.

I also think that panels can be more creatively utilized when being framed than stretchers. A lot of them are created to be framed off-balance. >>3505160 is a good example. It's basically designed to be like 30 degrees tilted to the right within a larger frame.

It was a lesson I learned on the first painting and kept using as a way to sabotage things that were annoying me. year 2 is about literally never using black paint. It's a 1000 painting series. Saying that the fields of painting, filmmaking, and print photography have similar applications doesn't negate the fact that like 150 years ago 1 of those 3 industries didn't exist and the other was in it's infancy. All of modern and contemporary art history is reflected by a shift in demand away from valuing an art's ability to realistically capture life (because cameras do that now) to art's ability to convey feelings and ideas etc.

Other than like the first 15, most of the first 150 were graphite transfers too. I take a printmaking approach to the production process where I work on multiple canvasses at a time and a big part of that has been that I'm Bunch of reasons why I justify "cheating" and I've said most of them in this thread. Van Gogh cheated and he's who I'm racing, it's a series about about technology and human progress, etc. But the primary reason I don't just draw is to spite (you).

Part of the entire process of this series is that A: I'm actively trying to experiment with subversion, B: It's a narrative experiment about entropy and evolution and learning that starts closer to exact reproduction and moves away from dependence on technology as it progresses, C: the point is that anyone can make art and the rules don't matter. Don't let your memes be dreams.

Nobody really has given a good reason NOT to use grids on big ass paintings. I spend a good amount of time in photoshop setting up the exact framing of the image I want, why the fuck would I just eyeball it?

are you familiar with van gogh's peasant paintings? And "visually assaulting" when it comes to pictures of people cringing and recoiling and sighing and stuff doesn't necessarily feel like a bad criticism to me.

a lot of them are kind of painted to be marketed to bars to hang over urinals so people stare at weird funny judgmental faces while they piss. Urinal portraits are the future.
