So, it seems like there are a good number of people who take issue with my art skills, the way I run things, or just straight up just me in general.

I don't think Lava or w ever ran into this problem on such a consistent basis (it's gotten to a point where it temporarily derails almost every thread), so clearly, something's not going right.

I'll leave this poll here, and if you'd like, feel free to leave anything from constructive to scathing feedback on how I can improve myself. If need be, I can step down and find an appropriate substitute.

I'm still working on dev in the meantime.

Although, is all this stuff I'm hearing about Aguri legit? I mean, from what I can tell, I'm learning a fair bit (the perspective course has been really useful). Is someone just meming hard, is this some new /ic/ crab bait or is it still a meaningful course to develop core skills?

I think you need to have a specific type of temperament to be capable of learning in that method and I don't think it's common. In my experience the vast majority of artists who get good started out just drawing a lot of things they like for fun and incrementally increased the amount they study.

the thing about me is that i actually enjoy studies and exercises because i'm separated from any emotional attachment

it's when i try to draw things that i "want to draw" that i feel absolute bumfuck misery because it makes me acutely aware of how far away i am from my goals

Maybe the bottom line is that I should just be less afraid to fail, and find more joy in the struggle of applying things I know as I collect them into things that I want to try to do.
But man, if stuff like pic related isn't a justification for immediate suicide, I don't know what is. I almost vomited when hitting the submit button.

But fantasy worlds and everything that occupy them, from the creatures, to the flora, to the races that navigate them is something I really want to learn how to draw well.

what studies are you doing? I don't know what your current situation is but I think you should pay more attention to what you're studying? Not just doing mindless copies. For example, if you think you're weak in terms of doing heads in diff angles, do mindful studies of them, grind 20 or more heads, then another one in a diff angles. Keep doing it until the process is ingrained in your head.

That too. Don't fear failure, rather you have to fail faster so you'll know what aspect to improve. Sorry my english isn't that good

I don't think I have enough in the way of fundamentals to begin, but maybe I'm too afraid of even starting to begin with. Even Jerry showed how brave he can be with his imagination in the mech challenge.

I guess one part of it is that I don't know... how to study? Like, I understand internally that i shouldn't be blindly copying, and to take into account the construction of the figure, how it represents actual form in 3d space, but I find myself depending on contours anyway to create something remotely presentable or proportionally accurate. I guess that's why I gravitated towards Aguri, since it shows me an easy path to developing fundamentals step by step (and the perspective lessons definitely help).
I'd like to think I'm "mindful" when I draw from life, but I honestly don't know if I am doing that.

I guess another thing is we are easily overwhelmed with what things to study first, which further paralyzes oneself. Just take it small baby steps. Slow and steady, you don't have to rush absorbing all the fundies available in the sticky.

oh also i think it's really refreshing your art's as it is, it's like it advertises the appeal of the site showing not only the farthest along skill-wise are welcome, everyone can join in and improve together.
so i like your work, and feel it doesn't actually align with your thought that you're somehow letting us down by not being the best. to me it's exactly the opposite, like you're encouraging us. you work so hard for us on the site that you could be any level at all; it's totally irrelevant.
since building up our skill's a never-ending process, we all end up experiencing every stage in the spectrum. new-ish skills mean there's you've a world of new fun stuff out there you can usefully look into, never for a second feel bad about this.
also never feel discouraged if you dont have time to art because working on dev skills is just as admirable and self improving, and working towards success is hugely about setting yourself up for future happiness, but you're living all these present years too, so dont neglect your personal downtime as well

Lava was constantly ragged on for being absolute shit at art and his autistic and uppity blogposts / attitude towards art, andW is probably the most hated person in las. Granted prior to shutting down the sites I don't remember any rags on w's art or anything, but it's definitely not been clear sailing there either.

I don't think it's optimal to learn in such a strictly linear fashion like Aguri's guide. Better consider the stuff listed there as a list of ingredients, but not necessarily the order you should learn them.
Approach them in any order you would like, go back and forth, dip your toes on one topic and move on to the next, whatever that will bring you closer to your artistic goals. Though starting with learning basic perspective is probably a good idea.

When you joined up for it you had to draw a submission relating to a chosen topic every day, the topic was chosen by everyone (even people not in the topic challenge could vote on it) out of 3 randomly generated topics.
It's an incomplete feature because Lava never worked anymore on it after it was initially created, besides adding some more topics to the initial pool (which was made up in the thead by anons).
It was supposed to become weekly, and ideally only topic challenge users should be allowed to vote for which topic they'd draw.
Because it never changed after it was created, it quickly became samey after a year or so and having to draw to the topic every single day made people feel like they were in hell, hense, "topic hell". Those that were the first to join and stuck with it were called the "topic frontliners".

Well, specifically in relation to Menes's submission - the Tarot:

In the third arc of Hirohiko Araki's manga JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, many of the heroes (Joseph Joestar, his grandson Jotaro Kujo, and their travelling companions) have supernatural "stands" - otherworldly forces that that they can call upon - based on the Tarot. I dont really care about the badgers. I like that the history of challenges stays there so I can go back and do them myself if they seem interesting even if I dont get the badge. Thanks guys, I'll do some searching, I just didn't quite have a clue what to look for.
One little annoyance though, I searched for some local clubs that focus on drawing and art but I quickly find that many of these tend to attract old and retired people.
Understandably so and by no means do I hate older people but I just don't feel comfortable in a club with only people from a totally different generation.

I can't really help you with that.
At least for me, I managed to turn the tables a bit, I stopped forcing myself to draw every day and started seeing drawing as a reward.
After a long day at work, thank god I get to draw a bit when I get home.

It takes a lot of effort and you need to force yourself to see it this way but I find that after a while I'm actually enjoying it again, looking forward to the moments I get to pick up a pencil again, especially when life outside the paper is hard on you.

I've had it with work, the tensions is insane and sitting behind a computer all day is mentally draining and since I don't watch animu or play games, drawing becomes a wonderful escape.

What are the best challenges? I feel like plein air and robot design are the best we've had so far because they're not necessarily grindy so much as they are figuring out how to tackle things you normally wouldn't. Should we have more design challenges? Maybe master studies? At the same time I feel silly making things that should normally be done for growth turned into challenges for badgers. Idk I think I'll give up joining challenges and will instead just do them not for the badgers but more for personal growth.

Would anyone be insulted if I copied their studies/what they're studying? I feel like a lot more can be done to grow together rather than just alongside each other. The camaraderie of tackling the same things as someone else really calls to me.

Sorry guys, I plan on offering up whatever streak I've built up by the end of this challenge to loomis. I'll be back for the challenges I've signed up for though, and then after that, I'll see my way out for a long time.

I was thinking about quiting sooner though. This challenge is getting pretty rough to do everyday.

Never been to the discord before. Its kinda hard to jump into a new community. I just dont wanna go join something (lets use a highschool anime club as a example) and everyone is super obnoxious or mean.

I know my weaknesses; construction, backgrounds, painting, linear perspective, etc. When I see someone elses studies, I feel like I learn a lot just by seeing it. For example, echo, dattab and Beachpacket have great studies that I like and will try to emulate. Although, I think Beachpacket got skipped in the above list.

Whats up with all this list business? Does it upset people that much when someone makes a list?

There was no DAD discord, only a LAS discord with hundreds of names I don't recognise, unless you mean the one nicnac created.
