I keep going back and forth on that. On one hand I want the impression for fabric (ergo the crispish lines on the folds), but i see also where smoothing the lines might improve it a bit too.

I agree about the color, it is a little ham fisted, but it is still in progress. The important thing to me is to get it finished, and keep painting.

Thanks for the feedback, I've got some time this weekend to do a spate of painting (wage slave), and I'll definitely keep in mind your suggestions.

By ham-fisted, I mean that they are fairly saturated, and I think I could get some variation of light and dark in there to increase visiual interest.

Also are you using a pallet knife? Just curious cause I like the kind of scraped texture on the trees.

i'm gonna be straight forward with you and it's probably going to come across harsh. But you are on /ic/, because you paint like you paint, if you know what I mean. You also need the attention of that anonymous autistic crowd on here, for some reason. You have a style that is off the chart, not in a good way.

I don't think it is good for you to expose yourself to the /ic/ crowd, because of the level you are on and because /ic/ simply isn't open for artists in traditional media that are trying to find a way for themselves that isn't just "grinding fundies" or, in you case, artists that are stuck in a phase and running in circles style-wise.

it's like a first year painting student tries to shove his paintings into everyones face in a pedestrian area. you have so much to learn, so little self-reflection and poor self-assessment. it isn't good for you to upload each picture you (haven't even) finished on here. it is only confusing you. you need more time finding what you want to achieve.

>> No.3468701

>you need more time finding what you want to achieve.
I want to achieve a style that looks like I'm painting Claymation. That's the style I've been trying to achieve forever. Not much more to it than that. Occasionally I succeed.

>> No.3468724

>>3468676
I'm using this board mainly to find harsh critique. In a couple years I am confident that I will have a set style that will hopefully be palletable to normies as well as fine artists. I don't need an autistic following, but people are usually honest here.

>> No.3468728

>>3468701
If that is what you wanted to achieve, I have to say I was never reminded of claymation in any way. It lacks the plasticity, thickness and peculiarity of the look of clay. all that shows is that you have a mannerism going of painting the same face over and over again (circle cheeks, also circle tits by the way, thin eyes, flat). you are often content with a rough brush stroke that isn't doing anything for the painting except for "color it in, so the background isn't coming through". the composition in your paintings is all over the place, non-harmonic and the paintings feel cut off. for instance, in that one with the three or more nude women, the brush strokes in the background seem timid and "careful not to paint over the edge" in a way.

there are just too many beginners mistakes at this point, most of which you don't even register as such. either it was you or someone else, but someone defended their work because "the teachers at my uni loved it". this is only showing everyone that a school can't turn you into an artist, if you haven't got the base for it worked out.

it's just a design choice
in the redon piece i posted the hardness of the line contrasts with the softness of the pinks and yellows of the shell, highlighting both the subtlety of the color and the careful confidence of the linework. At the same time it creates an almost photographic flatness, as if the shell were illuminated by a camera flash, which given the painterly nature of the work gives it an especially dreamy quality.

You need to ask yourself why you do this. You add more and more layers of paint. It doesn’t improve the painting, instead the face is like a clown mask.

I'm from a place that happens to have a long history of plein air painting / hudson river school influence and having passed through the anus of academia, I've heard that using photo refs aren't real painting a million times. I don't intend to justify whether my reffed paintings do in fact stand as legitimate paintings, because to me in my experience there is no difference between life drawing and using a photo reference. That's not to say that I have anything against painting from observation, but when I get home from work, I would rather spend more time thinking about the painting itself over the subject that I am painting. For me, a photograph is a way of resolving just about any problem that stands before me and the subject.

I work at a place that has artists/collectors/enthusiasts coming in every day and I like to talk to these people about art and often times it leads to how they make it. The best working-artists paint from life / observation. They'll go out on a hike early in the morning and get to where the light is just right for the perfect view, or they'll run out to a favorite spot when the clouds are just right, and they'll just to a shit ton of predatory paintings and sketches without even touching a final piece. In the evening they'll go back to their home studio where they will stitch it all together over the coarse of weeks or months, often returning to their space for more sketches or studies. Betsy Shmoe on the other hand will just snap a picture and go home and paint it. She doesn't really have the time to commit to such an endeavor, nor does she have the training. It's not so much a question of her commitment to art, or if she is making legitimate art pieces. She just wants to make a pretty picture and do her best. In that regard, I am Joe Shmoe. I gotta go to work and at the end of the day I need to paint. I'm going to take the quickest route from A to Acrylic Painting, and if that's using photographs, then i'm using photographs.

It's very difficult to pinpoint exactly what my problem is with using photo ref. I can't put my finger on what I don't like about it. A lot of times I can tell there was a photo being used by a certain realism in perspective etc that just doesn't sit right with me. But if that is what works best for you, I think that's perfectly fine. People do things differently.

YOU NEED TO LEARN TO BE MORE PATIENT if you're thinking of adding it today, anon. Let it dry. Then paint on top of it. If you need to make an area darker, make it darker, then wait for it to dry again, and put the light on top of it. Light should always go over dark, and for that you need to wait between layers. Nobody is telling you you need to finish a painting in a day, and it looks like you are trying to do everything in as few layers and as fast as you can. Composition is nonexistent - that curve you have going on is lazy as all fuck, and you know it.

Value range is nonexistent, and as a result the color range is very limited.

Start with expanding your value range a bit more, and spend time really getting your shadows to move towards the light in a pleasant way, alternating between warms and cools along the way.

If you're just starting out do not work with food, flowers or other things that change with time.

Take objects that have at least two different kind of materials - ie. fabrics, metals, glass, ceramics, whatever.

Look at still life paintings that have arrangements that appeal to you. Go for something like that.

Use a single light source. Multiple light sources are a recipe for fucking things up.

Take your time. Your objects won't degrade so you have the time to work. Paint in stages, using oil diluted with mineral spirits at first, and as you build your layers up use your oil medium.

If you want a more step-by-step approach, look at the Watts Atelier video tutorial on cgpeers.

bad advice. worse than "don't make shadows gray" theres a time and a place for everything when used with care. also highlights can easily be white depending how reflective the object is. in this case, the surface of an apple is very fucking reflective. put a white lightbulb next to an apple irl and see what happens

you should either get a lightstand or you should move your still life next to a window and work on it over the course of a few days when the light is in the proper place, maybe start multiple still lifes for different times of day. Quantity is what you need most desperately right now, quality will come with time.

As far as your table situation, that's completely fine. I have a drafting table that I set up my still lifes on and depending on my mood I'll paint the surface the still life is on whatever color I'm feeling that day (especially because the table is covered in paint and I don't have the energy to paint a paint splattered table every time). I'd stick with trying to make it a simple three value wood if you're reinterpreting the surface it is on though, don't try to imagine too much of what you are painting or there will be a disconnect between the realism of your objects and the imagined surface they are resting on. I'd recommend looking at Odilon Redon's still lifes of flowers and see how he handled making a simple surface for his objects to rest on with only a midtone and a lighter highlight. You can do a lot with a few layers, you just need to have the patience to start doing layers in the first place.

Think about the strips of light on the surfaces, they shouldn't be as well defined and even as yours are. I think you've got some good tone going with the base colors, but its the hard lines that are messing with you.

>> No.3484893

>>3484887
with water, the nice thing about acrylics is if you do a layer on top of another layer, you can blend it in after the fact with a little water, because the acrylic stays water soluble for a long time even if it dries quickly. Until you put a varnish on the painting that makes it water proof you can manipulate the layers as much as you want for the most part.

Thanks man! I love nathan's work, him and Mike hernandez really inspire me with their plein air work.
I always do an under painting in a warm tone, either orange red or yellow, but leave the brightest areas or focal point without the under painting. That is more so that I make a mental note that I want the viewer to focus there, so my detail/color radiates from that area. After that, I always go very heavy on paint, I tend to really like the 'marbling' effect of multiple unmixed paints, but will sometimes do washes for areas that need to be softer edged. I want to get more practice with washes though as I dont feel as comfortable with them.

Think you should ask the guy if it's actually him cause I'm not working yet, but from what I gather on the entertainment side of things (rather than fine art, which is something you can still pursue if you really want to) I think most people who like painting environments do stuff like color keys or environment design digitally, and then do traditional plein air stuff on the side, which is what I think he's doing. Look up people like Robert Kondo, Dice Tsutsumi, or Nathan Fowkes to name a few. But you can still pursue traditional painting as career as a fine artist I think, I just don't know as much about it.

Looks realistic color wise, but I think your foreshortening is off. Looking at the earth surface, I think you started making stripes of color smaller too late. The don't become smaller up until it's almost the horizon. I can't say the same about water surface, because I can attribute lack of foreshortening to that being a wave though. Just my opinion.

I wanted to say stripes of light. Those light lines.

all you need to do is look at an underwater pic to tell what's wrong.
I asked anon if he watched any tutorials on how to paint water/underwater, and I got a reply of "there's nothing wrong but he needs to fix this, this and this"
