Let's have a music thread, /ic/.
I find that listening to certian artists/tracks really helps get my creative juices flowing. Different genres get me to produce different stuff, so I'd like to know what /ic/ listens to for inspiration.
For instance, when I want to draw some really high energy stuff I'll listen to Midori or something similar.

I actually find that I go on autopilot when I listen to music.
If I'm not in silence I draw noticeably worse

youre supposed to go on autopilot. its a sign of mastery to be able to do things without thinking about them.

i disagree, but to each their own. art isnt like writing, you dont have to think of words, its literally just shapes and colour so its more visual, i get better by thinking about my artwork after its done,

more to the point, listening to music doesnt overpower my ability to form thoughts, i dont listen at 11.

posting work because noone ever does

This. Silence is the only serious viable option.

Drawing with music is like coding with music. In coding, you need to carefully think about what you want to do, and how you're going to implement it. Every step of the process is important, because every step interferes with the whole. Exactly like drawing.
Music is a distraction. It is significantly harder to focus on a difficult problem while there's music in the background interfering with your concentration. And, naturally, drawing is a difficult problem.
I used to draw with music, but I've caught myself many times paying more attention to the music than to what I was actually drawing; The famous "autopilot" mode. When I stopped drawing with music my focus significantly improved and, with it, the quality of my work and speed of my improvement did as well.

I think this comes with time, though. I played in a ton of bands growing up and into college, and now I like to produce music with my friends. They are way less experienced than I am and they like to let beats or melodies run while they think about what they are going to do - often just experimenting. I much prefer to stop the beat or melody (I hear it in my head anyway) and think about what I want to place.

So, I think the more mastery you have, the more your brain is working on the problem, so you prefer silence over anything that would take away some of your brain power

the human brain isn't actually able to do more than one thing at once. Whenever you're listening to music while doing something else, your brain actually switches in between those two actions. It does that pretty quickly, so you think you do both at the same time, but you don't. Some neuroscientist actually believe that multitasking like that is harmful, as it could damage our sense of prioritasation.

that's not true at all, the thing that allows our slow slow brains to work so well is the way it can do lots of stuff at once. what you're describing is how a computer works, and that's why computers need to be 100,000 times faster than human brains just to not suck. the 'clock speed' of a human brain is only 200hz

Music while drawing helps with my ADD. It keeps occupied the part of my brain that wants to think about all sorts of random shit and allows me to focus on drawing. Music with no lyrics is best.

listening to music while working can be very beneficial and it can lead to disaster. some music is jut not fit to run in the background. it will change your mood, speed, patience in a way you may not consciously realize. that being said, I find music that is slow, steady and puristic helpful and it hardly leads to accidents - Erik Satie's catalogue of piano pieces for instance.

I do appreciate silence when working. we can only focus on so much at a time. think blind musicians: they excel in their craft, because they have almost 100% focus on the music they produce (rest is on body coordination etc.).

I'm like >>3465686, in complete silence I've got a runaway train of thought so it's not going to be any better than any theoretical loss of concentration that could come from listening to music anyway. While most people are generally going to say soft piano or classical music is the go-to for listening while drawing, what works best for me is something chaotic that I naturally can't focus on while drawing. Lately I've been listening to Witch House, but usually I put on Noise, Doom/Doomgaze or Breakcore.

Totally true.
If your want to improve in art you need to solve problem all the time. I find it impossible to solve perspective and rotated+tilted complex form with music.
Art takes a lot of effort and can be compared to programming.
I perform in both areas best in total silence.
You are just more effective and don't need to split your attention.
Music is for relaxation. If you listen to music focus on it and enjoy it to the fullest, but just having noise in the background while working on something that actually needs your attention is just moronic.

creative. Will it help me draw better?Probably not but it does help me get going.
