3456114 No.3456114 [Reply] [Original]

Okay, so I recently brought a anime drawing course on udemy. the artist, who calmed that he was going to teach people how to draw "Real, Authentic anime and manga." and not look like "Fake anime"
I then saw this 5 minuets in the course.
Be honest, did I make a horrible decision.?

There's so many styles in anime and manga, someone claiming they'll teach you have to draw real authentic anime/manga just shows they have no idea what they're talking about.

the vegeta rip off looks pretty fucking bad but the other ones are some what passable as mediocre fan art tier stuff

if you want to draw anime, just copy until you can do it without copying, anime faces are formulaic as fuck and at worst you can copy and just change minor aspects

OP
2x Drop out of gamedev course here and i tell you
You're better drawing yourself and learning online and not having someone teach you if their art style is bullshit
Find someone you want to copy an artstyle from then add your mix to it. Its always like that.
In an art course its better to draw and draw and draw
May i ask you if you have a diploma and a shit portfolio and the other guy has no diploma and a good portfolio who would you hire? Ofc the one with the experience. Not someone who can draw just boxes
Same with gamedev. Just make games. Diploma is useless.
Also
OP if you want to practice anatomy use this

Nope, that's literally a meme. If you do it that way, you'll never make it because animu/mango style is very different from classical western style and you'll get lots of bad habits from learning to draw western style.

>If you learn to draw anime you're going to be that "drawings look kinda ok at a certain angle" guy.
It just means he needs to practice more. Look at early Oh My Goddess, for example, it's barely fan art level.

But I can't, for the life of me, draw smooth lines. Like, every time I start drawing a face, my hand freezes up and I resort to chicken scratches and shit.

They still value technical competence. In the west, the focus has shifted so hard towards "expression" and "individualism" that it doesn't matter if you just splashed a canvas with a can of beans and period blood if you can convince someone it's deep. Art as a technical skill isn't valued as much and so it's not in people's consciousness as a thing to work on and hone.

They have a wholly different system. For example, they only rarely use those skeletons/mannequins. This results in better dynamics because they can just draw what's cool.

Man, there was a thread on Krautchan about this ages ago, sadly I didn't screenshot it.
AFAIK, Asians really copy, copy, copy the artists they like until a comined style is developed naturally. They don't learn perspective and anatomy like western artists. Another reason for that is that perfect art doesn't count as much as good character design and stories on the Asian market.
There's also this Japanese philosophy of "natural imperfection", while western artists want things to be perfect.
Look at One Piece - from a western artist's perspective, it's laughable, but it's the most successful manga right now.

Question for all you artists here.. Have any of you went to college or certain art programs in order to learn anything that helped overall? I've always had an interest in drawing since around my middle school years, so about 11-13 years ago. I would draw in time frames and then sort of just doodle in between for months. I would end up trying to copy my favorite anime/manga scenes or at least the characters, but not in a tracing matter, more of looking at the source material and back to my notebook trying to copy it as best as I could for the time.

I already know I lack skills in perspective, coloring/shading/lighting and working more on anatomy. I'm sure there's a bit more I'm lacking too but what I'm trying to ask is if it's worth checking into some college courses or programs.. or if I'd be better off making use of certain books and online videos that'd teach me what I'd need to know instead?

I sadly don't have any real drawings to show off for feedback and a point of view of where I stand currently. Here's the most recent drawing I'm working on (haven't fully went through and touched up the colors yet or get into the shading/lighting of course.)

>do they copy or trace? or both?
Both. See that recent "scandal" about the DBS artist swiping Captain America.
But to develop their style, they simply copy others. It helps of course that "manga style" is very heterogenous and includes very cartoony stuff as well as almost western realistic stuff.

I took a figure drawing class at JC but I'm a college dropout. The only semblance of skill I have is because I've been drawing consistently for nearly 20 years. Unfortunately there is probably a level of skill that you can only achieve through taking actual college courses but if you're a basement dweller, you can do just fine reading books and watching youtube tutorials. So long as you have the drive to improve your art you won't fall into deviantart status. Complacency with mediocrity is what defines that type of artist.

Thanks for the reply, I've been really wanting to pursue drawing in order to get income from doing it. While also doing it because I do have a love for wanting to improve and be able to create stuff. I've been trying to gather the best information on the subject before I jump into any courses or try out programs.

Currently I'm unemployed so my free time would allow me to learn new things for improvement, but I'm also looking at picking up some sort of job within a month or two for some funds. My plan right now is to figure out the best course of action. I ask about college courses vs self discipline online learning since I read that peoples thoughts on college for art isn't seen as being the best outcome, but they would give a degree.

I'll check back on the thread when I wake up later today if it's around, hopefully getting more information out of here.

Alright bozo listen up.

There are things Udemy is good for, and things it CLEARLY isn't.

What it's good for :
> Marketing schemes
> Design shlock
> Entry level programming

What it's NOT good for:
> Any truly in depth review of a craft
> Deep level programming beyond buzzwords
> Art
> ESPECIALLY Art.

There are many guides, books, and videos out there FOR FREE on every subject imaginable. Why in the WORLD would you pay for a Udemy course on anime, just watch a Milkeymegamega video or something, dude's a meme but atleast he knows how to draw an anime girl right and uses actual methods.

Or, you stop being a stupid twat, go to the STICKY on the catalog and actually, for once in your immature life, apply yourself to a program that takes both time and discipline.

Before getting your hands on "study", ask your self what exactly you want.

Here are a few things you need to make it clear:
1.Do you want to make a living via drawing manga or anime?
2.What kind of style do you like? you can take your favorite artist as example, if you don't know where to find one, try Pixiv, which could be very likely your only hope to find your favorite anime/manga artist or style you want.
3.Do you simply love to draw manga with no pressure, or do you want to be a pro?

These question helps optimization your learning curve, make it more fitting into your needs/goal, different desire require different way to learn how to draw, draw cute anime girls with no pressure, or perhaps some meme/trolling reaction pic on 4chan, don't go full art course for it, simply find your favor artist on Pixiv and mimic it few times a week will do.

But if you want to draw like HJL, November, 草壁, ゆきみ, 木shiyo, 米白粕, 井上雄彦, RZ, that would be a whole new level of studying effort. Starting with the basic art lesson, learn to use soft/hardware, gather materials, perspective, human anatomy, value, lighting, composition, chromatology, visual design, psychology blahblahblah, you need everything to get to that level, plus a common problem will definitely bugging you the whole time, "The style", there's no one can teach about it, you need to draw a lot to develop it.

Think about these questions, before searching art course on the internet.

Most artists start by copying other artists they like, then develop their own style as they improve. I highly recommend keeping a watch on Hamada (Tsugumomo mangaka) Twitter, where he announces his streams. Watch how he goes from stick figures through more-detailed "pencil" stage, then his final "inking", changing and adjusting all along the way. That's the best part of doing art digitally, the freedom to change your mind.
