Do you consider using a real background cheating and/or lazy?

yes

I don't believe it's cheating, but it's extremely lazy.
Mangakas do that a lot too and makes their work look souless.

Not if you can make it all work together. The piece you sent isn't mixing them properly. If you look at work from guys like Maciej Cuciara, Eytan Zana or Scott Robertson I'd say it's okay. They aren't placing drawn characters on photo backgrounds though. They do a variety of things to make their stuff work for movie/game production stuff.

"Cheating/lazy" doesn't mean anything in a fast paced production environment where conveying ideas is the focus. The image you posted seems to try to be a sort of illustration so I don't think it makes sense here.

I guess it doesn't matter though if the only point is to make a piece that some losers can masturbate to so there is that... It's like asking about set design in porn movies. I don't give a fuck. I just want to cum on some toilet paper. I guess you wouldn't have to care about it either if you're doing shit like this. I don't wank to cartoon tho so I'm no expert.

why do you cartoonist faggots look for every possible corner to cut from doing the work you're supposed to be specialized in?

>"real background"

You mean a photo? Yes of course, it's an environment that wasn't created by your skill and imagination, and doesn't fulfill the actual concept, but is just a cheap looking surrogate for it. The character you place in it, is more of a sticker.

>> No.3317304

But isn't that background from the recent trailer? Pic unrelated?

>> No.3317311

>>3317252
Depends on what the purpose of the artwork is. If you're selling backgrounds, it's probably cheating to use a picture. If you're doing random titty porn then no. No one gives a shit about your background.

missing the point. learn your fucking craft and you won't have to bother with all this bullshit. it will take you less time to produce work. the quality of your work will be better. and you won't have to seek validation for your shitty rationalizations keeping you at the beginner levels.

Pros cuts MORE corners, not less. Professional manga artists use photos for backgrounds in many cases. I was too a purist once but it's all bullshit when you have a deadline and you need to pay your bills.

This this this this.
Once I started being mentored by a professional and having him introduce me to other pros and seeing their processes I realized that when it comes to a job, the ends justify the means. Whatever gets you passable results in the shortest amount of time is what you do. If you're artistic enough you can figure out how to make it yours and not look like you just copped out while still gaining the time advantage. You save the full effort and going all out for personal pieces.

This too.
There was a thread a little while back where someone was dumping images of anime girls drawn into photos. The girls were obviously drawn to fit into the background. It was clear the intent was decorating the photos, not trying to enhance a boring figure with a more detailed background so it was more of an interesting mixed media/collage kind of thing rather than looking like a lazy artist. Context and intent really matters.

There are a lot of mangakas that don't use pictures for backgrounds.

>> No.3317520

There are a lot of mangakas that draw basically no backgrounds. At least the ones who use photos have to take the time to posterize them and crop them into the panel. That's more than the zero effort of leaving them out all together and drawing a bunch of talking floating heads.
And yes I know there are some ziptone backgrounds and things that are already pre posterized but still going and getting one and editing it into the page is still more than just tossing a few sparkles or wispy lines in the background. If the problem is supposedly being lazy there are definitely lazier things.

Because Shadman is a pornography artist. The only thing you need to worry is not whether or not your work is good, whether or not a shit ton of people jerk off to it.

You say this, and yet manga backgrounds take a huge fat dump on comic backgrounds.
