IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

There are a couple books on animals, but none that I've seen that go into face rhythms or portraiture. They only do gesture and anatomy. It's mostly about finding the general structure and planes of the head and rendering fur that represents the bones and musculature under it.

One way is to measure the relation between angles. Eye to nose, nose to chin, eye to ears, ears to collars... Something like. I hardly use this method.

The other is to break it down into simple forms. Sphere for the head, tapered cylinder for the muzzle and neck. Add placeholder for features and start detailing or go straight to painting.

IF you client is asking for PERFECT representation of whatever photo they give you. Use grid or just fucking trace.

You are taking these too quick.
Take your time, draw proper ovals for the head, make sure the center guidelines for the face goes through the eyes and vertically through inbetween the eyes and base of nose. Create proper forms.

/ic/ doesn't really iterate this but take your time with everything. The 30 second gestures are usually a higher intermediate goal. 1-2 minutes for intermediates, 5-10 minutes for beginners.

You have to have an understanding about the forms and flow before you can become quicker at it. Like you have to learn to walk before you can run. Aim for being correct first before fast.

Im doing the exercise where I trace over a line 8 times, I can do it with the felt tip pen on paper but on digital I can't consistently make the same line (or arc or ellipse).

Is this just a mileage thing?

Sorry for the horrendous quality, but all I have is a potato-tier camera. I'm trying to get that muscle group in between the sterno-mastoids and the trapezius down, the ones I colored orange, red, and green. But any anatomy reference I look at is inconsistent as hell. Some show about 6-8 muscles/tendons while the reference I used for these drawings only show 3 major ones, different from what I posted earlier >>3266112.
I know I'm fucking up hard here and I doubt what I drew is accurate, which is why I need to know what I'm doing wrong so I can finally move on from this shit.

This post makes me wonder
Why exactly do you want to know all the neck muscles accurately? Do you aspire to have medical knowledge? Because artists usually don't go that deep into anatomy because this knowldege it's not needed 99.9% of the time. That's why majority of anatomy for artist ooks talk about landmarks, major masses, important bones and mscles, but never ALL of them. That's insane.

i always end up in a desd end whenever I attempt to color. It always ends up as muddy piece of shit. Ive been told to do photostudies to learn how to color, but what if I cant even do photostudies? How exactly does one know that he's on the right track with regards to painting? It seems like unless I have the foresight of an experienced painter, I will always be painting 'blindly' , hoping it doesnt turn up as shit in the end. Im at my limit, Ive been returning to this for days now, convincing that I would be able to crack it. I already looked into blocking and I still cant do jack.

You're only using shades of brown on the skin, and no cool or warm colors. Skin reflects a ton of color, and reacts differently to different kinds of light. This is "symbol" painting, you're painting what you think is there, not what really is there - cool colors in the shadows, like blues, greens, purples, and violets, and warm colors like yellow, orange and red in the highlighted/lit areas. Different areas of the face will have different colors, too - blues in the eye sockets, reds and pinks around the nose and mouth. I can tell by your attempts you don't understand this, and it's the step you need to learn, to render skin accurately.
Attached is a good example of the kinds of colors found in skin.
Color temperature is one of the building blocks you use to create the illusion of depth, and volume. Later on, you can push this illusion further by adjusting hues to push the volume more, along with lighting.

A good thing to do is to take the photos you're gonna use as reference and pump up the saturation and vibrancy, this will pop more of the colors out for you. Using photos like the one you are is styled for fashion, and had it's colors adjusted for that, so the colors may not even be there. This is why painting from life is always better, for learning, photos and the processing they go through strips away critical details for us artists.

Another thing to look into is that painting is often about creating optical illusion and mixing of color, in the eye, which is extremely hard to do digitally, and hard to explain. DrawMixPaint goes into it with this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZE7JQwmmKM

You don't recreate what you see - you create the illusion of what you see, the viewer's eyes do most of the work. The wayour brains and eyes work, we go off visual cues, for color, hue, depth, texture. Often two colors in an area will mix as a totally different color in the eye, from a distance. The distance is what's missing, often, with digital painting, and it's why I'll get up and go across the room and look at something, just like I would with a real painting. I also, in Photoshop, have a small preview window of the entire painting open, alongside the main window, so I can see what's happening.
A good example of this is from my art history class. There's a famous painting, "The Raft Of The Medusa", by Gericault. In it, multiple figures are on it, on a raft, with water being sprayed on them. From far away, it looks like he painted each water droplet, like you think he would - with white paint. Nope. If you get up close (and I've done this, at the Louvre where it hangs) he painted stripes of green, yellow, and red. Up close, it's stripes of color. From a normal viewing distance in the gallery, they read to the eye was white reflections of water drops.
This is what learning to paint is. It's not photographic, it's interpretive.

Actually, I already adjusted the contrast and saturation of my reference, it's way more desaturated than what I posted. That aside, very informative especially with how it's more on how we perceive colors. I'll look into the video. Thanks a lot.

I'm a total beginner in need of basic skills. I'm looking for basic excercises I can work on to improve my hand control and build basic intuition about how to go about how to capture shade and form.

I know it probably sounds like I'm just looking for easy shortcuts but that's not it; I'm a university mathfag who spends most of the day on campus but I always have paper and writing instruments on me. I'd like to invest more time in this and do things comprehensively but currently my days are too busy for me to draw big projects (and my skills are too poor anyways). I hope I get more time in the summer, but I figure for now it would be a good habbit to build.

I need help. I've been drawing for ten years and am only now trying gesture drawing. Pic related. I feel like I'm not understanding it. I can see the gesture in the references, and I can draw the main line of action, but I simply cannot figure out how I'm supposed to draw the rest. I keep trying to just draw to outlines as I see them, because that's how I taught myself to draw my shitty hack anime drawings, but I know that's not the point.

No he can't, cause you're doing fine. I honestly think the problem with the anatomy books ect stem from the fact that some muscles in the neck tend to slip over others depending on the position on the head and body. It honestly doesn't look too bad for now, except for maybe the thickness of the neck from a 3/4 view. Don't hesitate to slope a bit where the neck meets the jaw area. I'd recommend doing studying on how to do gesture to really get it down, these are all stiff and don't capture the movement or proportions of the models at all. I'd personally start with faster ones and work your way up, but don't overwork on gesture. I'm sure there are some really good resources around /ic/ for it. Good luck.

>> No.3269760

The gesture is usually the first step of a drawing but it is NOT the first step of the learning process. In order to create a gesture you need to have internalized perspective, proportion, anatomy, and have the muscle memory to draw the lines you want to draw. I don't think op could even draw an apple sitting in front of him.

It looks like you are copying other people's drawings. It is much easier to understand form when you draw from life. It also looks like you aren't confident with anatomy, when you draw the deltoid are you thinking about it's origin and insertion points? The back looks like abstract lumps than clearly planned out muscles.

If you feel like you are plateauing I would change how you are studying. Try drawing with just line and no value. Try drawing multiple objects in one scene instead of independently. Try changing your medium and using pen. Try changing the subject, drawing animals will help you draw people.

That is why these exercises are not exact copy. I’m creating the contour by drawing the form. Because form creates contour but it’s hard. As I said I can see improvement but with technique on line but not on form I just have a 3 day thou.
I have zero anatomy knowledge.

The problem here I think is I’m not drawing figure from life. I can’t afford a model. And I don’t have friends.
I’m thinking in use a mirror to draw myself.
Hope I’m in the right way.

Gesture is an aspect of composition and crucial to a work. However, much like composition, there are other things you work on first because gesture is the most abstract and complex aspect and requires being able to draw with some competence to understand without it getting in the way. It's sort of like anons getting hung up on fundamentals (while still missing composition) instead of just fucking drawing and applying fundamentals as you learn them.

Keys to drawing. Grasp drawing just by observation alone. All the lesson you need is in that book. Skim it if you want, I did the first time because it's "boring" at the time. but after a month I redo and finished it properly.

Finish that book and draw from life. Start drawing everything in your house, your friends house. Anything that you can see, DRAW.

Once you've grasp observational drawing you can jump into construction.

Loomis
Michael Hampton
Bridgman

and many others. So many ways to construct. I highly suggest learning from any and every source you can get your hands on. Shit ton of videos about this on youtube. Take what you want and mix it all. Eventually you'll find something that unique to you.
