Am I the only one who finds gesture...useless?

It just sounds like psuedo-zen bullshit.

FEEL THE FLOW, FIGURES TOO STIFF, etc.

Whenever I see Proko do "gesture". He says to push the gesture even further, even if it looks extremely unrealistic.

I'm trying to learn anatomy/how to draw people/etc. But theres just so much bullshit that it's a headache.

Are you done throwing your tantrum now? Good, now go do your gesture drawings.

That's why you are trying to learn and not actually learning because you think its bullshit.

If you want to get good at drawing stiff poses and only stumble upon a dynamic pose on occasion by accident then go ahead and not learn gestures and flow of action.

Not at all. But then, the people who do find it useless also can't draw.

"Gesture (in the way it's presented in proko etc) isn't normally how one would naturally draw. When we draw we tend to go for contour or 3D shape and this is fine. But in order to learn how to invent from imagination you need to learn gesture because it's the best way to extract from life to make what you do look dope." This is what I gathered from my teacher though not his exact words.

Basically, sit down and power through your gestures. You'll thank yourself later.

The biggest meme is shilling gestures to beginners m8. Learn the proportions of the body, then study the basic shapes and forms of the muscles and different body parts, and only when you've drawn some of that for a while does gesture make any sense

Do you know how some people complain their poses look stiff?

You know how some people can't come up with interesting poses?

You know how some people spend too much time on their drawings.

You know some people can't make long consistent lines?

Could you take a guess what they're not doing?

I'm assuming you're still a beginner

when i first strarted learning to draw people, i paid no mind to gesture n shit
it was more about struggling to make my people look decent

but once you learn how to draw decent people, you want to push it further

its really more about conveying motion and/or the characters personality and making the drawing more interesting

Yes, I'm still a beginner for the most part.

I'm doing what I can to learn anatomy through watching videos (Learning from books isn't my forte, for whatever reason, videos are much more suited for me).

Yet it's just a massive hassle. Prokos got the videos I'm looking for (drawing realistically), but his cringeworthy humor, and I'm looking to draw comic-bookish and realistic concept art in general, I'm just so fucking discouraged.

I don't know what to do.

It's more like, literal zen of drawing.
Only when your motivation is more than to just "draw stuff", do you become something more than just a craftsman.

If that doesn't click with you, just think of it as the difference between a picture of a person running and a picture of a person pretending to run.

Gestures never stand alone but they are the foundation and good drawing is built upon. To understand gestures is to understand the different angles, sizes and shapes of the construction elements that will make up your drawing which again is to understand how light interacts with your scene. If you lose the gestures then you lose your design and flow. It's one of the most important things in drawing/painting

This. This. This. When I did it at the start I had no idea what I was doing, but now everything makes more sense and I can actually FEEL THE GESTURE.

OP is a retard tho.
GESTURES ARE SO IMPORTANT, THEY ARE THE FUCKING MOST IMPORTANT PART OF FIGURE DRAWING HOLY SHIT.

Well thats all well and good but what the heck do I do about anatomy? Do I really need to learn how to draw all the goddamn bones, and all the muscles individually? I just want to do realistic comic art/concept art in general.

I just don't know what to do/what the best way to go about it is. Any time I try to practice I see no improvement so I say fuck it why bother.

yea you don't want to segment trying to draw the same thing by breaking it down into too many parts over the course of a long time. So if you took time to just learn anatomy, then just learn figure drawing, then just learn perspective, etc. At some point, you are going to have to put it all back together and then that ends up being a thing in itself to learn and the first thing you tried mastering will be the weakest part. Better to lump a couple of these disciplines together and not only learn how they work but how they work together.

Gesture is literally THE most important thing in drawing people. It's the reason why Vilppu can draw a stick figure that looks better than your Ecorche.

>>3257092
well, that's the great thing about speed, you don't have to make any effort to try and learn to draw faster. It will naturally happen as you master and better understand the actual important subjects.

Academic long poses and quick gestures are kind of two separate skill sets. I've studied at an atelier and I can tell you that there are plenty of people who can draw beautiful long poses who can't do gestures for shit. Long poses don't really teach that skill to any significant degree imo. Ofcourse, the people who are at the very top skill wise are proficient in both areas of skill, like Steve Huston for instance.

>> No.3257230

you do a quick gesture as a start of when you start an academic long pose.

Not necessarily, depends on the atelier. Some teaches it, some don't. Even so that's just one gesture in what can be a several weeks long pose.

gesture is pretty abstract conceptually. you should already be comfortable drawing figures and how line and perspective work together. otherwise gesture studies are going to seem disconnected from your art and a worse than a waste of time.
