about the pic: you can draw the best fucking drawing with a wax crayon stump that some 5yr old has chewed on.
don't buy expensive materials, sit don't anxiously and realize that you obviously suck compared to "industry standard" generic Loomis crap excercises. that's exactly why Loomis isn't recommended for absolute beginners: wrong expectations, leading to frustration. Loomis is great, if you want to get into generic illustration as a semi-advanced hobby drawing dude "i want to draw for occasional commissions". it's poison for beginners. you cut off your chance of finding yourself in drawing and you build up frustration, taking the fun out of it.

I can only say what has helped me personally. in the beginning, I only used a certain set of tools: always A4 paper, vertical, on a clipboard, using 01. to 0.5 mine pencils and a certain type of ballpoint pen in black. I used this set for about five years, drawing at least one A4 page every day in school. I didn't have to force myself to do it, I wanted to do it - you might think that this is not worth mentioning, but it is porbably the most important thing about making progress. (I read a lot of anons here complaining that they have to motivate themselves. sorry to say, but if that is the case, you will have a very very hard time)
I drew quick sketches of people, all day long. my classmates, teachers (very good, as they often keep the same posture for a long time), in the cafeteria, on my way to and back from school on buses and trains …. I drew as much as I could and I never once resorted to any "How to draw" books.

In the beginning, I was very dogmatic and restrictive. I resented the idea of drawing from nude models, as it seemed to scholastic to me. drawing from imagination was also more valuable to me. for about four years, all I did was practice cross-hatching, drawing in b/w and doing short comics (1-4 pages). I printed my first 36page comic in school and sold it for cheap to my classmates, still have one.
now I'm mainly a painter. I've revoked some of the restrictions I had, like drawing from models being inferior to imagination. the imagination you build when you practice and reach your 1000th A4 drawing page is the best tool to use when drawing from real life. during school, I've picked certain things I wanted to practice - eyes, difficult head postures, hands - and "grinded" them on my own until I was satisfied.
I'm fairly optimistic and successful at the moment and I live off of what I do, which is hardly made up of commissions for projects that I'm not 100% into. I guess in a way I "made it" already.
