Just befriend promising /beg/ artists, watch them grow, and then they'll eventually get popular.

Congrats you now have a pool of popular good artists friends.

Why?
Do you think popular artists are trophies or something?

That's like wanting to befriend a hot girl because she's hot. Why should someone want to be friends with you just because you like them for their art? Listen to >>3171700 >>3171754

Be their friend when they're still small.

I met a poet yesterday, he dropped out of philosophy at a very good university just to write poems. He was very realistic about it. Really cool guy.

anyway, what i'm trying to say is, if you want to meet cool people go to events and talk to people. But do remember that if you aren't interesting yourself, interesting people won't be drawn to you.

I'm a decent artist myself but I won't be friends with you unless you're in the same fandom as I'm into

Yup , sounds like getting popular artist friends is like growing plants. Gotta water them with support etc. I have the problem where im growing way faster than than still unpopular friends, and they always want shoutouts. My lesson to give to you is to not befriend to many small people. They get annoying if you have more than a couple.

Making friends with other artists is a big mistake
-they will gossip about you
-usually neurotic assholes
-constantly sizing you up
-art cliques are for ladder climbing, not making lasting friendships
-will abandon you if they think they can't gain anything from you
-won't actually buy your art
-are your direct competition

Making friends with your fanbase is 100x better.

This is good advice!
However I hear that its a bad idea to be friends with your commissioners ... Anyone have an opinion on this

>> No.3171873

>>3171847
Depends what you mean by friends.

I have commissioners who truly see me as a friend. I enjoy their company but don't consider them as such, I see money first. I know many people would say I'm an asshole and they'd certainly be right.
I guess what matters is whether it's easy for them to pay and commission or not. Where it could be a problem is if the friend in question is often asking for favors and such. Other negative side is that they could suck up a lot of your time and attention too.

just make a discord and people your level will eventually join. Or join a discord with people around your level and remain in contact with the ones you like. These things don't spawn miraculously

They're not mutually exclusive. You can draw for someone but still like them as a person to hang out with. Now, if you're "friends" with someone because they pay you and wouldn't bother talking to them once they stop giving you money for art, you're no different than a prostitute. Nothing wrong with that arrangement as long as you're on the same page with your patron. This is coming from a former stripper.
