As for the "What do you care?" point, because she's a symptom of a bigger problem of needy artists like her giving themselves labels to be an attention whore and feel like a special snowflake and acts like being agender or queer is a "trend" that I'm sure she'll grow out of by 30. Yep, the point of doing this is to emphasize "This is traditional art done with real paint, it's not digital," because digital is waaaaaaaay more forgiving than watercolor painting is. And with textures and shit I honestly can't tell if something is traditional or digital sometimes, so you take a photo with your paints to the side and it answers that question.

It also seems to help frame the artwork better. It says, "Hey I made this with my own hands," which a lot of people will appreciate more than just the image by itself. That said, I really do hate the ones where someone puts a dry brush on the page like "omg guys I'm literally making this right now."

My school for instance (which i'm not staying at because of some of these problems i'm about to list) has a 100% acceptance rate as of now, and one of the graduating animation seniors last year literally reproduced some crappy anime clips and had voice clips from anime like FLC and Naruto blaring from their section of the shared senior gallery space. It was an embarassment that one of the school's graduating seniors didn't seem to grow at all and produced something like that for their senior project (Which they should've been spending 1-2 years on making mind you the way my school currently does things).

But the entry rate is 100%. They look at a portfolio but unless you're already very advanced they still start you at "level one" classes regardless of the portfolio content and usually require a few teachers reccommending you take the more advanced class (Like a guy I had who was in life drawing 1 who could already do amazing stylistic life drawing with color while everyone else was afraid to make the jump from graphite to charcoal. It took a couple weeks before he got approved to go to the next level class).

Add the fact that no one coming in is ever at the same skill level as others just coming in and you're going to have a discrepancy in skill level by graduation.

So if she went to a school similar to mine while your example went to somewhere like CalArts where Id expect that levek of work to come from, then you don't have as big of an argument since there's waytoo many variables to impact those four years between the two artists.

I need to know more before i can definitively agree with you basically.

As I said i'm leaving my school. I stayed long enough to finish my fundamental courses so I can transfer elsewhere. Don't go to RMCAD.

I've been part of the artist community online for like ten years and I've never seen as much backstabbing, pettiness, bullying, blackmail, and whining in any group ever.
