I just hate coloring my lineart pictures (which I like to draw), simply because I dont know how to reach a decent result with little work, every time I do it, it takes as much time as I do a painting with no lines and it's much better looking.
So, are there any tutorials, step-by-step or tips on how to color linearts very efficiently?

Almost anything. Buy whatever's easily accessible and affordable enough that you won't mind burning through it. Go to your local art supply store and look at the cheapest sketchbooks that are decently bound and have paper with some tooth.
These Canson ones are cheap, durable and pretty good for pencil, but there are probably dozens of others that are just as good in the same price range.

You can use the magic wand tool to select outside the lines, the inverse the selection (look in the top menu bar for selection options) and expand it slightly.

You can also use the lasso tool.
But personally, I use a very pressure sensitive brush that changes sizes dramatically depending on how hard I press down. I can fill in little spaces carefully and big spaces quickly.

It depends on what your goal is. If your goal is illustration, go slower and focus on minutia. It's not quantity but quality.

You fucked up and now will have to wait, but they have it.

Some tips from someone that finished them last week:

-I've heard 1-10 are the best, and that 11-16 are redudant/explain too much stuff that it's unecessary or barelly necesary, once you finish 10, look at the next ones and decide if you want to continue them
-Be ready for hell, they are long and in many cases boring, but they're worth it. If you do 4 videos a day you will be done in about 2 and a half months, if every so ofter you do more you'll finish quickly, it will help you get some dicipline.
-I recomend putting the videos at 1.3 or 1.2 speed, Erik Speaks slow and in some lectures he struggles with photoshop, it'll help you get through it
-Around lecutre 7 or 8 you might feel like you don't need the rest, you do.
-Practicing it's not that important because they are a fuckton of lectures, don't practice but after watching them check out something to put them to use, landscape, form drawing, once you have the basic perspective down, it's time to have some fun.

The amount of knowledge is hard to get without having a master/teacher and like minded people around you. You will waste years on trial and error. You will have to reinvent even very, very simple things.

It's like any other complicated craft or profession, you don't want to be in the stone age.

You can get a lot out of buying Dover Books which reprint a lot of old books which were written by painters which were also teachers. They help a lot, but they aren't a cure for not learning the craft properly.

If you are strapped for money, go to school to become an illustrator or something similar, these have at least one year of traditional drawing in them.

Also there are local evening schools probably around you offering beginner courses for cheap.

Just make sure you go for stuff that is for becoming a professional, not for fun.

There is also "Perspective for Artists" by Rex Vicat Cole. Lots of exercises and tricks to get basic perspective done fast. I don't know if I would recommend it as a first book for perspective, but as a second one it is pretty helpful.

personal: drawing using a set square with integrated protractor and a mechanical pencil can be very useful instead of drawing it free hand. This avoids a lot of problems related to fatigue and you can concentrate on perspective. It's also very fast and most set squares don't smudge pencil lines unlike normal rulers, so you can beat the speed when drawing free hand and get better construction lines.

Golden Open acrylics are a slightly cheaper alternative. They still dry considerably faster than oil, but not fast enough that you can't blend or that you'll ruin your brushes if you don't clean them immediately. You can use a hermetically sealed glass container as a palette and your paint will stay usable for weeks. The paints themselves are not that much cheaper than artist-grade oils, but since you don't need to paint in a sealed/primed surface you can save a lot of money by using paper instead of canvas. Keep in mind the paint will dry faster in more absorbent surfaces, so you at least want some cheap watercolor paper, not printer paper like suggested above.

How to FUCK do I learn how to paint like jaime jones? I've been trying to copy his brushwork in Photoshop but I can't get it to work for the life of me. Does anybody have any tips? Should I read Color and Light, or how to render?

It's not something that can be taught in some tips, and it's not covered in those books.

It's just really really high level painting and control of brushwork and edges and shape and texture. It will take you years to learn how to paint like that.

You can download his brushes online to get a sense of what types of marks he is making his images with, but you will need to practice a lot to be able to reproduce his images, let alone crete your own like that. You can copy him to learn, and also copy the guys he learned from--Jaime did copies of many masters with good brushstrokes like Zorn, Sargent, and Leyendecker.

I think it's something you develope from reading too many crappy tutorials/ taking too many shortcuts and misunderstanding things in my slow climb to becoming a better artist instead of just learning things the right way.

I find that i can create relatively impressive artworks on some days while on others my drawings look like shit and basic fundamentals escape me.

I'll find myself working on something for hours, drawing it over and over, not being able to get it right. Then i'll calm down and SOMEHOW i now have the knowledge and end up fixing my mistakes in a matter of minutes. So people here keep saying that you should learn how to draw from life before trying to practice drawing from imagination.

1) What are the skills you gain by doing that that are applicable to drawing from imagination?
2) How do you do it? Do you just draw what you see like a camera or try to construct the scene as if you were 3D modeling it?
3) How good do you have to be at it before you can start learning how to draw from scratch?

>> No.2741912

>>2741909
>before
You do them simultaneously. Otherwise you're in danger of hyper simplification in construction.

The idea is that, in the most ignorant sense, that you deconstruct from life, keep all that knowledge of form and shapes in your noggin, and construct any amalgamation from scratch.

If you got gud at life before attempting imagination, you'd fall apart. After a while you get clearly capable and start just Alla Priming it, and thinking solely in terms of light, which is incredible for direct painting but translates like shit to imagination.

Which is a roundabout way of answering all three questions; you learn form and construction, you want to deconstruct and analyze whenever you can, and you start whenever you feel you're ready to not symbol draw like a scrub.

I dont have to look for reference for everything since my hand remembers it, saves lots of time ( and also makes using complicated reference easier if you know how parts you dont see look like)
Actually i kind of missed the question here

>2) How do you do it? Do you just draw what you see like a camera or try to construct the scene as if you were 3D modeling it?
There sure are different ways but i prefer putting everthing together of shapes and negative spaces

>3) How good do you have to be at it before you can start learning how to draw from scratch?
Depends on what you draw maybe? It has to look belivable enough, there is difference if you draw a human or a fantasy humanoid f.e

It's more a problem with complexity you seem to have. Drawing expects you to plan ahead.

Exactly how are these 2 curvilinear perspective setups different? I've constructed them differently, such that the lines on the left one are made from ellipses, whereas lines on the right one are made from arcs of circles.

Yet they both look correct and look like they are depicting the same thing. Are they in fact different in some way that has to do with the image plane or cone of vision?

I know the question of making neat linework has been asked a lot, but what about neat sketches? >> No.2743614

It's honestly just a matter of practice. Not just practice but deliberate practice.

Really nice sketches are an art in and of themselves - people have trained to draw good sketches. At its basic level sketches are just meant to be the foundation you build upon, it doesn't actually matter if your lines such if you're painting over them / inking it. That said, if you want a nice sketch, that means you need to actually practice getting it right on your first go.

That said, if you're sketching with a pencil you can still get 'neat' sketches by going light on a first pass and then darkening the lines you want to emphasize on a second pass with your pencil. It's basically inking, but usually it maintains a 'sketch' look anyway. If you're sketching in pen really the emphasis is on good confident lines (part of this is a matter of speed, but not the speed that comes with rush so much as the speed that comes with having done it a lot), but the principle is the same. Usually even if you fuck up, you can still emphasize with a thicker line and most people don't notice the thinner fucked up line.

Underprice yourself so you at least get rewarded while trying to get faster, or just put another year into grinding?
Not saying the prices look cheap to anyone else. Just that the per hour profit will be shitty.

Hey, some more technical question:

1- Should I bump the bit/color from 8 to 16-32 or just keep at 8?

2- What resolution you guys usually work with? 300p/i? 150?

3- What about color profile, I work with graphical design, so I change a lot between CMYK and RGB for printing and stuff, but for drawing, keep at monitor or sRGB?

4- What about past works, you keep the open psd? closed psd? or just a jpg/pdf?

>> No.2743727

>>2743709
1- 8. 32 will have most filters and adjustments disabled, and even 16 will generate absolutely massive files with no real practical benefit. You're not likely to notice a difference other than maybe less banding in gradients; the only reason to use 16 would be maybe if you're editing raw photos and need enough range to make drastic contrast/exposure/color adjustments.

2-Completely irrelevant unless you're printing your work. 300 would be the standard for print, but you can go lower at larger sizes that are meant to be viewed at a distance, or higher at lower sizes if you like you need to.

3-CMYK for offset printing, RGB for everything else. Any work you export to the web should be sRGB. If you want the best possible color reproduction it's a good idea to always work in a wide-gamut profile like aRGB or Lab and only convert to CMYK or sRGB when you're ready to export, but you may need to adjust your colors after doing that since some will have a tendency to desaturate.

4- Entirely up to you. If you have the hard drive space for it I see no reason not to keep your original psd. As far as when you're working, merge layers when you feel like you don't need them anymore, when you want to keep things neat or trim down file size.

Not that guy, but I've found that one of the big issues with my sketches being huge messes is that I don't think before I draw. It's not an instant cure, but taking a second to think about what I want every line to do before I draw it has really helped me.

Anyone gone from a small to medium tablet?

I have an intuos creative small and it can be a bit unwieldy at times with a 24" monitor. I use it together with Lazy Nezumi with lowish line stability on. LN removes a lot of the unwieldyness, but it's still OKish without it I guess.

How do I draw faces looking straight on without them turning out ugly and flat?
I've only just started studying anatomy recently. And I spent a bunch of time drawing faces from different angles- which I can do with relative ease now- but faces straight on come out very bad.
I've also noticed that most artists I look up to never draw faces straight on! Is this just a general thing you guys avoid? I recall hearing about straight-on views being hard.

use different materials (even a pencil held parallel to the paper will help, hatching helps too) to convey shadows which will convey volume and depth. you can also mess with the background to bring the whole thing (seemingly) closer to the foreground and to the viewer

>"Stop watching tutorial, you will not learn a thing from those." Or something along the line. - My ex-lecturers.
I think you're giving them a different meaning, unless they were complete fucking shitters.

They probably meant that all of those countless fucking tutorials on the internet are made by selfloving amateurs, and information in those is wrong or misleading.

You should look for a solution for one specific problem, not a generic one-fit-all tutorial, but even then, your best teacher sohuld be you. Analyze your work and think of ways to improve it, and if you can't quite find a way to do it, ask others or seeks for tutorials and books.

Old books are way better than tutorials too, since they're written by people who actually went to schools and got proficient and time being the real test to their knowledge.

I'm a beginner that just got a new drawing tablet and it feels great compared to on paper, mainly because I can look up at a screen instead of having to crane my neck and back to look at my sketchbook. (I'm 6'5 my desk is barely 3 ft high.) But I'm afraid that I'm starting bad habits with it, mainly because whenever I draw lines normally they end up very scratchy and messy, and with the tablet I can just erase the rough parts and make them look better. Pic related is the first thing I've made on it, just something simple to try it out, bottom pic is before I erase everything and top is after. I feel like this might be detrimental to me, since I should learn how to draw better lines instead of relying on the erase tool to make everything look better.

Is this something I should be worrying about or not? Also what are some things I can practice to generally make my lines less messy?

I recently started myself, have not much experience but I'll share what I'm doing
You can cheaply paint on:
-smooth cardboard (better if primed)
-thick paper

Will bend a little but it's fine for practicing

I'm starting with low/medium quality paint, but not the bottom of the barrel lowest, it's good enough

Use a limited palette to learn how to mix and to not spend too much on paint you'll use 1ml of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNB3XY67Q-I

Pick any reference you want, avoid stuff with large quantities of fully saturated non-primary colors because you can't mix those

Avoid shit quality brushes for your mains, perhaps get a couple of really shit ones because it's useful to have a brush that gets completely fucked up to do noisy strokes

Assuming you use your own cardboard from boxes you have lying around, it's $10 for paint, $10 for medium quality brushes, $10 for primer (or make yourself), and this will give you a lot of practice. A4 painting pads are cheap if you don't have boxes to tear apart, like $3. Consider some cheap palette knives too for $3-4. See for example Igor Sakharov on youtube he uses palette knife a lot and also does quick rough paintings which is useful for us to just get the main colors and values right

It's very cheap
