Can't really tell what the butterfly has landed on.
Also you could darken its left wing to add some depth
Other than that I really dig it! Good job!

>> No.2675247

>>2675241
It's really flat. The background has no depth, the chameleon and branch are parallel to the picture plane, the butterfly is a symmetrical top view, even the lighting is frontal lighting which flattens things.

Also all your materials are painted the same way, like everything is made of a matte clay. Try to get some more variation.

What are the coloured spots on the chameleon? Is it paint? magic? technology? scales? Try to make it clearer what they are. At the moment they look sort of like stickers because they are so flat and geometric.

>> No.2675250

>>2675241
The butterfly sticks out a bit too much kinda like a spotlight is shining on it. Not completely consistent with the rest of the lighting. Also its position is a bit ambiguous, almost like it's landed on the flat surface of the painting.

>>2675247
I agree that there could be some more texture, particularly in the branches. Also the branch really should extend back and to the left, because right now it's curving in on the left and out on the right which is not only quite unusual for a branch but as you said really doesn't serve the composition well.

The chameleon is fab af tho

If you want more blood, sure, but you'd need to change its value so it's not so similar to the hair. In the original drawing it wasn't much of a problem because they don't/won't overlap, but when it covers most of her body it begins to look like she's a very hairy half-shaved muppet. It also doesn't help that the bloodstain on her upper arm seems to curve in the same direction her hair does, which not only makes it look even more like her hair, but it doesn't make much sense for blood to drip like that anyway. There are also two little "strands" of blood on the left side of her neck.

It's not my drawing anyway, it's just that I can't unsee it...

The sloth kinda disappears into the background despite it being the closest thing. Of course adding detail would help, but some brighter values or more distinct hues from the rest of the tree should help.

As for the angry alien emperor looking guy, we're seeing too much of his front and not enough of his top for this perspective. Alternatively you could move the horizon line down. Stick him in a box and find the vanishing point, then of course make sure you stay consistent to that with the other details.

It's a good start to an interesting and pretty tricky composition.

The fuck does that mean?

Top of the sky is too dark, and foreground grass is lacking in contrast, especially dark values considering the amount of darks in the rocks. The contrasts are basically backwards, you want low contrasts in the bg and high contrasts in the fg, while instead here you have too much contrast in the bg elements including the house and trees, for how low-contrast all of this grass is.

There, now the next time something looks wrong but you're too dumb to tell why at least have the decency to admit your ignorance.

Hmm, good luck.

Generally, though, I've found laying down general value to be much more important than local value. The left-lit foliage on that tree, for example; I think you might get better results starting from a silhouette of a unified color and gradually working in lights and darks, rather than trying to separate it into three different tones right away. (The main explanation behind this is that by laying down middle values all over, you ensure that they're present all across the object, while with what you did the lightest parts have none of the darks, and the darkest parts have none of the lights, which isn't true with your ref.)

Looks cool man, really nailing that creepy vibe. I did a quick paintover addressing some things I would personally change:
-better structure of the head...you have features like the nose really misplaced, and the overall lighting and planes of the skull as a whole can be made a bit more consistent
-different materials, everything right now has the same shininess to it and texture, so I tried bringing in some different colours and make some things translucent, some shiny, some more matte
-structure of the shoulders is solved more
-more careful values with things like the teeth on the shadow side are no longer so bright

Most of your problems are drawing problems and not paint. When it comes to painting you just need some more variation in materials and colours I think.

I'd change the angle of the butterfly's wings to make it look more in-motion. The way it's positioned now seems like it's not flying, but resting.
Look at videos of butterflies on youtube and pause until you find a reference you like. I had to do that with moths.

Also the branch need some more work, color and depth. It's flat, like one solid color.
I would also blur or roughen the background more, as the sharpness of the foliage leaves compared to the softer forms of the Chameleon are weird. Remember, the focus is sharp, and the rest is softer.

Drawing a lot and having confidence in what you're drawing is what I'd say results in being able to draw quickly. Of course you're gonna be slow if you're studying something or are timid and not sure of the correct way to draw something.

>> No.2677499

Keep doing the things that take long enough. Repetition will inevitably lead you to shortening your process/you will just naturally get faster at it.

Also look up videos/other artist that sport a similar style/workflow so you can get an idea of how you could improve yours (or just look up people with quick workflow and see if you can transform yours).

Create tools for yourself. If you draw alot of hairy things or skin textures you may want to create a texture brush or method for quickly doing such things.

The biggest though is clearly grasping your fundies. If your fundies are 100% then you're going to have a good time.

This looks really nice. I think playing up that overhead lighting and the atmosphere will help push it a bit further. It's stylized already so you can get away with some heavier treatment in terms of lighting and have it work.

I also felt the name plaque in the corner was really distracting and didn't add anything to the image. It was way too bright and was sitting on the edge of the picture plane creating this awful tangent. The briefcase creates tangents with the edge of the image as well as the cat's elbows too, so that whole area just feels cramped. Removing the name plaque but leaving the briefcase tangents makes it seem intentional and helps with the intimidation and cramped nature of the image.

Time yourself. Do 20-30 min drawings, 10-15 a day at least wice a week. Use a timer and don't touch it after times up.

This will teach you to make decisions about how much time to spend blocking, detailing, rendering, etc, and where to do so. Don't think about it for the first session, but from then on be like "i''m gonna just block in for 10 min, detail for 5, then do rendering for the last 5. So question for people with a good portfolio/industry experience. Is there any point to doing this past personal study and values? Like will someone looking at my shit actually heighten their regard from seeing these types of studies?

I want to do monster/creature designs mainly at the end of the day and while I can appreciate the intrinsic value I rather just be doing these same value/structure practices on animal/architecture/tech instead of people. Sorry if this is worded weird, I'm incredibly tired.

Yeah she's holding a ribbon with a metal ball attached that she's swinging around like a flail. The weird tall guy has a rifle

A battle scene illustration I'm putting together. I have never in my life painted a skirmish happening. We'll see how well it goes.

I've been studying anatomy this week, I need some feedback...
I did 3 sketches tonight

Breasts and proportions are still a problem... What do you guys think?
Any tips?

Anon are there any subtle things that bother you? I'm a little worried about his expression.

Besides that they may be a little over weight in comparison to your reference, they look real good anon. I'm impressed.

I'm a FUCKING IDIOT. I did all these colors, shrunk the image down to 55 pixels per inch to save it as a jpg to show to all my friends on /ic/ because this draw thread is dying anyway so what's the biggie in spamming it now? So I saved the jpg then went outside for a walk. I did some thinking about the picture and came back in to make some changes to the colors. THen i decide just now to post here. I thought, gee, I should save another jpg because I just made a number of changes. So I go to change the ppi to 55 again... wait... it's already at 55... but didn't I just do a whole bunch of painting? ... FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUU-!!!

and I saved over everything.

Fuck my life.

habbened do me recently, but I didn't lose more than 30 minutes thankfully.
Use incremental saves, autobackup, whatever? Don't be as technologically retarded as a dem, it's embarrassing.

Otherwise, your picture is milliseconds before the girl falls, given her pose.
And I would cover her feet with ballerinas, they look disgusting.

Could be worse. I've done similar but you could of just literally lost it.

Just make sure to make backups while working next time. Livings learning.

Can you explain why on earth you write something like this? the "could of" is probably one of the biggest mysteries to me.

As a personal preference, I like thick women. Not fat or too overweight though... Just enough body fat to give them a more natural/feminine form.
