does anyone on /ic/ have references for medieval armor or fantasy setting? I'm trying to find new ways to make unique fantasy designed while still retaining some level of realism. I'll dump what I have so far, but I'm on a new computer, and need to get more references

The problem is you're designing something from an already designed thing. In order to design something new you'd need to go to its roots which in this case is to know how the original armors worked and what they looked like.

The armor was also designed. Blacksmiths might as well be sculptors, artistically speaking. Especially for the more fancy suits. It's nitpicky to say you shouldn't ever use other drawings for inspiration/reference.

And I never said that. I just pointed out what the problem is if you do that. Yes, armors were designed but that's not an excuse for using second-hand designed armors as references.

But don't make me laugh.

Seeing other's designs shows what elements they focused on, which elements they ignored. And using help from what has already been designed to help you reinvent the wheel isn't a crime.
(it could be, though).

It's the same fucking thing as a master study. Compositional study, color study it doesn't matter...the original artist made decisions, and some other artist likes those decisions...enough for inspiration.

Looking at the root resource is only half the battle, anon. You then have to figure out what works and what doesn't: and that's through other artist's work for inspiration and critics' reactions to them.

Ignorant artists, I swear.

That's worse than mediocre and also quite ungenuine. You should be able to fill the gap between the source and and the final product. Looking at others' works is out of the formula so it's more like addition information that could help but never use it instead of your own.

What this guy said.

Also don't just look at plate, look at different types and sizes of maille (hauberks cover most of the body, byrnies are closer to t-shirts), lamellar and laminar, splint armour, brigandines, there are a lot out there. Look at different styles and sizes of tabard and surcoat worn over the top too.
