Hey dude whatever your name is.
Congratulations on reaching the point where /ic/ as a collective hivemind of jealous children will try to break you apart.

Is your art perfect? No, Ofcourse not it never will be. I can see that you are doing a great job at self critiqueing or listening to critiques you get. You have outgrown this place.

Were you better in 2013 and 2012?
Ofcourse not, Look at how many characters you managed to put into those scenes and they all work together. It's time to leave this place and you know it.

You can have a Non-Mech John Park art for your troubles.

Just so you know I'm not white knighting you:
I dislike fan art so so much, God it's so bland...
Worst thing is I probably need to do some myself to gain attention... Stop posting your art here man, Nothing good will ever come off it.
Just keep on doing what you are doing it's working fine.

That's not true though.

In >>2177410 I feel that their best pieces are the portraits done from life. There's a life in them. They seem like real people, especially that blond next to the dragon. Though, when it comes to their full on painted works from imagination afterwards...I don't know...it seems kind of...I don't know...awkward? Like their figures don't seem don't seem natural? Maybe they stick out too much from the backgrounds?

It would be like seeing a polygon 3d character with a flatyt 2D background? Or maybe they are going into uncanny valley? I don't know what it is...it just seems unsettling a bit.

It's not about being jelly though. It's just a honest observation. If anything, out of the new stuff, I feel that the night scene with all of the animals look the least awkward? Like it seems to be match a bit more?

You can learn things at all stages in a painting or coloring.
There's also a psychological boost from having completed something, even if it's not very good.

No, the people here see the others posting here as somewhat being at the same level as they are in terms of craftsmanship, while ignoring the idea that not established artists "spend time here, too", but the proverbial bottom of the barrel does post here, with them being an established part of this cesspool of failed existences we dwell in.

You wanna know why you will end up working in a job again you couldn't care less for?
Because we all post here, thinking to ourselves that these fine people on 4chan's /ic/ are our peers and that we are halfway between pathetic and awesome as artists.

Shitty skewed perspective, holmes, as if there's room in this world for your art, occupying someone else's minds and enchanting them with your work, skill and vision.

"If it doesn't have to be the Mona Lisa to be good art", then why not try to surpass this portrait, instead of glumly accepting that whatever you create, will be always worse in some way than the Mona Lisa?

Because you look at things wrong, when it comes to art.
We are all failed children in the eyes of both our chosen parents and the ones related by blood or affection to us.
Welcome to Hell, anon.

This is the answer to "wouldn't eternal torture not ever get old soon": no, because all dreams and memories we have are of the only thing we would experience constantly and without respite or distraction.

No, because to you, it would never feel like torture, yet your aspirations will never be satisfied until you die.

Love,
God

Maybe some kickstarter project may hire you because they are strapped for cash, but no actual company would think twice about hiring this dude yet. To think that Disney of all places would even look at him is actually hilarious. They only take the best of the best who have minimum 10 years experience on AAA titles. Hell, they won't even look at you unless you have 5 years experience or are just coming out of Art Center at the top of your class.

I'm also curious to know the "tons" of people you know that are worse than that and in the industry that are worse than this dude. Surely, they could be janitors, secretaries, or the occasional code monkey.. But I promise you that they are not considered concept artists. You know theres like only a small team of concept artists on each project right? Mass Effect had like 3 concept artists. Blizzard has like 4 main dudes that have been there for 15 years. Star Wars has like 4 dudes. All of which were some of the best of the best with 10+ years experience. There's no way he could get a concept art job with that shit portfolio.

i think i get it,

from the girl
the simplistic character one isnt bad because they are just standing around
the viking is a bit stiff, probably a pure imagination and he didn't know what details should or shouldn't be there,
the fight... there is no weight in those characters,
the animal dancing one isn't bad
the dragons are fantastic, but that girls again has no weight and is an really awkward pose.

the last one is kind of good, but again, stiff as fuck focal point character.

All I can say is that if you take away the fancy coloring, the drawing itself is just "meh", they put too much effort with style to the point that they lost focus on general skills, it's obvious that 2015 is really heavy on symbols. The artist's attitude is also pretty poor towards criticism, realism and practicing.

In the end doesn't matter how long you've been drawing, it matters how much you've worked on your craft and how much skill you've gain over time. I understand that they can draw whatever they want but using "it's my style" or "I'm satisfied with what I'm doing" as an excuse for lack of skill and hiding laziness, it also shows that you don't have any intention of doing much, much more than what you usually do. This is why I use artist like them as future reference to not end up like that, when you're on an art high or your ego blinds you.

Painting and Drawing are not the same!
With on you block in values and with the other you set down lines, thank you for proving my point.
Of course you can "draw" with a brush, but then it's still considered a drawing because you're still blocking in values or a single one, with painting you have to know how to go about all this, how to render, how to use the brushes to their best effect, what colors do and how they react next to each other, how to mix them.

That is certainly more than the decision between a thick line and a thin line, wouldn't you say?

>>2179700
>fundamentals
>is a buzzword
First off, the word buzzword itself is a buzzword, so fuck off you little redditard.

If you cannot draw a human head with a very good precision and expertise your painting will suck, that is what I consider a fundamental trait among every good painter, do you think Ruan Jia or those digital artists didnt learn how to draw?
Of course you don't need to shade every fucking drawing to the max but it is the knowledge of bone structure, muscle movement and the alignment of both that dictates how you go about painting, because for example, a painter follows muscles and tissue with his brush, like a good chef does not go against the fibre in meat with his knife, but cuts following the strands of fibre.

If you don't know how to cook macaroni and cheese(I chose a stupid amerifat dish for you to feel welcome here) nor any other complex recipe, I don't expect you to be able to be good at making a nice entrecote.

TL;DReddit: fuck off to you where you came from

>> No.2179812

I don't agree. Would you say that a portrait done on pencils/charcoal is a drawing or a painting? It has both shades and lines

Something being monochrome has nothing to do with it being a painting or a drawing

>> No.2179814

>>2179812
PS: Maybe we're arguing semantics. But to me not all drawings are paintings, but all paintings are drawing. When you put on clothes you're re-drawing your silouette. When you do a mosaic, design, collage, low relief, even sculpture, setting a scene for a movie, you're drawing.

That's why if you're able to solve one of those things it's likely that it won't be a hard effort to solve the others once you get past the technical limitations.

tl;dr: Do you need to handle a pencil like a god to sculpt? Do you need to rek canvases to design? No. But it overlaps and it's extremely useful. You don't need to be a god of the pencil to do anything, you need to git gud and there are many other ways to do so.

>> No.2179824

>>2179814
P.P.S: We could argue that it's the most direct, cheap and time effective way, and it probably is true. But if you never grab a pencil and just paint you will become good too, same as if you just sculpt, take photos or whatever.

I didnt want to make you feel bad (well maybe a little) I mean I have no knowledge of your routine and how much you did, but me for example Ive been at it for 5-6 months and I am already way way better than when I started. I was always a good human photocopier but now I am really learning, I am drawing every day, for at least 1-2 hours since 3 months or so (usually draw/paint 25 hours a week at least).

You on the other hand could probably be way better, if you would either stick to it more or trained better (I dont know what you do so...)

I don't think I've spent much enough. At first it was like a hobby, drawing anime and etc., then I started to take it seriously and spend time on studies and such, but still maybe 1-2 hours a day(not everyday). There was also months of procrastination. I don't consider myself as disciplined hardworker, but gradually I started to get interested more and more. Gamedev becomes my golden dream where people actually create something (and fight with souvenir swords) and have worthy lives.
I've never attended any art courses or schools, completely self-taught. I also have a specialty that has nothing to do with art. A year ago got a full-time office job so it also affected my progress. I lost my job and finally gathered money to attend an Art School but don't expect much because of external education.

Thanks for the replies and critiques, I am aware that I am lacking in a lot of areas, and I still have a long way to go before I can get picked up by any of the studios I want to work for.

Lately I don't think I am putting in enough effort, but I am also very tired after 3 hard years at my current art college. It's been very demanding, and a lot of the naive and hopeful attitude I had when I started college has gone away (this is why I think a lot of people like the 2012-2013 stuff more). I still love drawing more than anything, but now I am starting to realize reality, and that I have to really fight to get to the level I have to be at to get hired. I get reminded of that often, and it helps that you guys remind me too.

so yes, I will have to go over the fundamentals again, probably take up way more figure drawing and traditional painting. It really shows that I haven't being doing much of this lately.

what I did was try to bash my head into a project. not try to fix it on the run or become stuck, just go into it as much as I can

after that leave it to rest for a couple days (it's very likely that at the moment you think it's shit and have a drive to fix it, making it even shittier)

come back and check what I did wrong, what I did right, what I should try about it

example: I want to draw beautiful women, so I tackled a painting from one of my sketches. Face was great, shades were great, expression was great. When I went to add hair it was shit. Tried to add more and it was even shittier. Instead of fixing it I decided to try using charcoal on top of the acrylic

what ended up was something nothing like I expected to do, but learned tons. and it was just a couple of hours. my valuable lessons were some positive: I am noticeably better than I expected at drawing women, mixing colors, levelling the palette and giving strength to the pic. I am shit (talking abysmal here) at hair, pretty bad at centering the pic, chroinc fear of doing figurative backgrounds. Neutral things were that I'd rather use shades than lines for my style, and that I should not be afraid of using a pencil before going into the brush

after this I grinded hair and the following sketches and works got noticeably better

sorry for the length but it may be helpful to anyone stuck. JUST

I don't agree

It's true that if you don't invest thousands of hours you won't git gud. But doing it without much idea on how to get better won't assure results. You have to be smart and have loads of EFFECTIVE hours

To say an extreme example, if you spend 4 hours a day for 4 years drawing ponies, you'll be shit

If you spend half an hour a day for four years, every day doing a new investigation, be it gesture, live models, different coloring techniques, trying animation, sculpture, photography, and so, and actually challenge yourself and overcome, you'll become pretty fucking good, despite spending 1/8 of those hours. Even moreso, you'll learn how to improve by yourself even better

To git gud you need to reach your limits and overcome. Time is needed, but time is not enough, that's why there's so many guys spending 4+ years with extremely slow progress and some others with incredible progress in a matter of months

In short:
Git gud

Long version:
What you really need is to make mileage, practice from references, on the subjects you have less experience in. Relearn and practice again from the things that benefit you and unlearn the things that don't.

For example I wanted to draw more semi-realistic eyes, at first I just drew realistic eyes from imagination but that obviously didn't get me anywhere, they were only symbols that try to represent realistic eyes (badly), as time progress I decided to look up on anything that looks similar for what I'm going for, things that represents realistic eyes, like doll eyes, artist that draw semi realistic eyes, actual eyes (from photo reference to anatomical graphs), the more resources and reference I have gain and draw from has given me some mileage.

But if you apply this to any subject to what you want to get better at you could be able to carve out your own signature style and get better over time.
The key is to practice a lot , it is an endless and continuos process if you want your art to grow over time, practice hard but also smart.

The imagination is limited compared to actual reference, but blindly copying from reference to the point it becomes a carbon copy, will make it boring and hold you back from working on imagination, just do both.

I can't draw without references and everything I do draw looks flat. What is the progress you used to really get a hold on that illusion of 3d? Art is like a sport or any other thing, you need to gain knowledge and expertise, where you build muscle as a body builder you crunch out studies to help your brain to get on the right tracks. And so on and so forth, but I can tell you that 2 hours a day spent smart or even more than that will result in really fast and good progress, that is not a secret.

you'll have to force yourself to draw from imagination. It's going to suck and your ego will most likely take a hit, but you're never going to make progress until you do. It's okay to suck. You don't have to show your suckiness to anyone, you just have to get past it.

To think in 3D space, you have to observe 3D space. Constantly examine your environment and take note of how perspective interacts with everything around you. Study atmospheric perspective. Use contour line. Break down everything into basic shapes (cylinders, spheres, cubes, pyramids, rectangles) and learn how all of those shapes change with distance and perspective.

If you do this enough without relying on reference, you will improve.

That summer I had the biggest jump in skill so far, I think mostly due to putting in crazy amounts of time, and not doing strictly grayscale to color. Also being extremely observant and just studying everything around you and reverse engineering how light plays on objects. You can seriously improve by doing this diligently and not even putting pen to pad.

I mentioned above the summer of 2013 was probably the best. I just had a part time job at Target and no homework. I spent all the time I wasn't fucking around/partying/playing vidya/sleeping or working, drawing. Right now I just finished school and have no job or schedule whatsoever, and I've found it much harder to be productive. I think having some amount of structure and constrictions on time and resources really helps you prioritize and get stuff done. As for more technical stuff, I never really did studies (you should still do them tho!!), I would just get an awesome idea, then when I got stuck I'd grab some reference and basically do dozens of little studies within the piece.

Hope that helps, and thanks guys. Dunno why I'm still here. You may not see me, but I'm always lurking...

Also some awesome resources: This is pretty much all I listen to when drawing

Not that guy, but what sort of values/colors should a canvas be? I see a lot of people using greys but I can't quite figure what purpose it serves just yet.

it can be anything, just not white, its so that your eyes don't strain plush it fucks with your values, i know people who use sycras paper texture and people who draw in a violet canvas its up to you but don't use white.
